You are much easier to understand than the Garmin folks. Thanks for posting 😎

Worked like a charm! Had a small issue with the USB cable, it HAS TO be capable of data transfer. A simple charger cable will NOT work.

Neat thanks. Is there a way to transfer maps? I got a Canada map seven years ago and need to transfer it to the same model as my old is malfunctioning.

I've got a ton of customers, truck stops, fuel solutions, etc... Stored in my OTR1000. I have a fear it will bite the dust one day and I won't be able to retreive that info to put it in a new one. I went out and bought a Micro SD Card thinking that I could backup the built in storage information to that Micro SD Card. I could not figure out how to accomplish that. I tried googling a "how to" and found the "Garmin Express" app. The information is very vague. I have "backed up" my OTR1000 via the Garmin Express to my PC. So I guess I'm good now? At least what I have saved up to this point? If this one dies, I can buy a new one and all the data I manually entered in my current device can be transfered or "restored" to a brand new device? This is why I think being able to back up to the Micro SD would be better. I could at will do a backup and not have to remember to do it on my PC on home time, what little I come home.

It seemed to have lost many of my saved locations, it may be my cheap Garmin drivesmart 51, what do you recommend for a regular driver that wants to save their locations and be able to reroute a trip.

I recommend connecting your device to Garmin Express via PC. Add the Device, register, update maps and software. Then go to utilities and back up. This will save your favorites and any trip plans you have saved. You can transfer your back up to any Garmin device. I do not recommend using a Nuvi car only GPS in a CMV. For trucks, any Garmin Dezl will be a good tool for navigation. I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with all the settings and how to shape route or add waypoints to route you the way you want the GPS to give you proper turn by turn instructions. Not all models will route you the same way. The 580 might send you differently than a 780. So, it's important to map your route and know where you're going before you start driving. GPS units have been known to lose satellite signals near large buildings and in inclement wx. If you don't know where you should go and you let the GPS to guide you, you could end up where you don't belong.

Some of the most modern Garmin units can update maps and software via Wi-Fi. Unfortunately you cannot do wireless backups or cloud saves at least at this time.

Did this process __RESTORE__ items such as trip logs (the thin cyan line), recents, searches? The only items restored on my drivesmart 65 were "SAVED", and custom trips (trip planner). Items above were present in the backup folder on the pc, but were not restored after performing the RESTORE operation (in garminexpress) nor when manually copied to the respective folders on the device.

The backup/ transfer is for Saved Places and Trip Planner saved trips only. All other settings need to be customized as if it were new and you did a data reset. Trip logs do not transfer. Neither does Custom Avoidances
