Hope you guys found this video helpful! I finally found my testing battery hidden behind my framed FLW jersey that's on the floor in the office. Oops! :D
just bought a boat it has the old Striker 5cv s/n 52G025161 do you have any videos to maximize the mapping on this unit...obviously no sd card so i'm not expecting much
Hi Frank, thank you so much for subscribing to the channel! So the Striker series is really their entry product and as you mentioned, it has no SD Card so there are no updates or maps you can add to it at all. The newer Striker Plus series have built in Wifi and can connect to Active Captain, but the older models are more a "what you see is what you get" kind of deal. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful :(
Hi Dan, I followed your instructions and made my .gpx file on my Mac and when I put the micro SD card and followed your instructions to merge data from the card it could not recognize any files at all on my micro SD card. Do I have to do this process from an non-Mac computer for my Garmin to see and find the file? Thanks
You have to make sure the SD Card is formatted in Fat32. If you confirmed it is and the unit is still not picking up the .GPX file, make sure the unit is looking for that filetype (it could be set to be looking for the other filetype it supports instead of GPX).
I own EchoMap 73DV and EchoMap 73SV units. Years ago, I installed Fishing Hotspots from a CD I purchased into Basecamp. I was able to transfer the Hotspots data to my older Garmin GPS V Unit. Since Hotspots is installed into basecamp is there a way to transfer it to either of my Echomap units?
What is the best way to build trolling routes at home and transfer them to my Garmin EchoMap chartplotters to control my Garmin Force trolling motor? In our lake the stripers often hang at 40-60 feet and trolling using my Garmin Force trolling motor with downriggers is the most productive technique. My problem is that I tell my boat driver brother I have lures at 55 and 50 feet and he often hangs up all my gear in 40 feet of water, even with a dedicated map unit and great maps. He also has no concept of how gradually to make turns to avoid creating problems with my JetDiver rods with 100-124 feet of line out. He makes the same mistakes in the same places over and over again and my female partner boat driver wasn’t much better. If I could build some trolling routes at home and transfer them to my GPS units fishing could be a lot more effective and enjoyable for all concerned. I played around with my tablet and Active Captain and could do a fair job with it, but my tablet is WiFi only, not waterproof and usually not on the boat. It seems it would be a pain to create the routes on my phone because of the small screen and the general lack of precision using my fat fingers as pointing devices. I would prefer to build the routes on a computer with a decent size screen and mouse, but Active Captain doesn’t run on Windows. Garmin Express does run on windows, but I don’t know if can do what I need. Can someone else who been through this point me in the right direction? Thanks
I have a Garmin Striker 7SV that does NOT have an SD card slot. I opened the GPS Visualizer on my desktop and see how it creates waypoints. How do I then import those from my computer to my Garmin unit on my boat? Do you have a video for that as I think I can only import/export using ActiveCaptian from my iPhone.
Dan, Are you aware of the HomePort software was discontinued? Even though your video on waypoint updates on a computer was 3 years old, I just now tried to no avail. Is there any other software available to read the Garmin files for my Echomap Plus 93SV?
Hello. I just read that you can use Active Captain for GPX editing but haven't tried it. I've used EasyXML for editing Humminbird generated GPX files and it works great.
@@DanRichardFishing.Yes 11mm tear. Open cut not keyhole. Try keep off co-codamol and definitely make sure someone is at home especially after your first day. Good Luck and Happy Christmas
Question. I have 93sv uhd echomap garmin. Mdc puts out its brush pile locations and I can download and see them on my phone. How can I get those into my garmin?
Hi Dan, I have got my battery and data cable all sorted. Just for your info, we have a newly created 'no anchor zone' local to us here in the UK. I was able to mark this out on the Garmin by varying your method. I marked a few points on the edges on the zone on Google Maps, saving them to text, converting them to gpx and saving them as a track, rather than waypoints. By going to saved tracks on the Garmin I can see the zone nicely marked out.
Hey Dan, very useful video thanks! I'm very new to GPS technology. How come in my part of the country with my Echomap plus, the GPS is about 20-30 feet off on a few lakes around here? Every other lake I fish it works fantastic! Is it the satellites? Thanks!
You're very welcome! So when you fish on your lake, the GPS location is off by 20 or 30 feet or the map itself is off? You can actually check to see if it's the GPS coordinates by setting a waypoint on your unit and on your phone in Google Maps and then check to see if they have matching coordinates. They may differ slightly but should be within 5 feet. If they match, then for some reason your maps are off. I'd call Garmin and ask them about it.
Hi Brian, yeah I find the Livescope transducers a bit confusing myself... so the LVS12 only works with the Utra series, not the UHD series, which is actually two different series. UHD is the Ultra High Definition series that comes in a 6", 7" or 9" screen. Only the 7" and 9" have the Panoptix port on the back BUT you need the Livescope black box set that includes the black box and the LVS2 transducer. That's the key difference in that the Ultra series that are the 10"' or 12" units have the next generation of black box "built in" the units and that's why the LVS12 only works on those units and the GPSMap 8xxx series and the LVS32 requires the external box for any unit. So to answer your question, the LVS12 will not work on an UHD unit, it only works on the Ultra series. Would need to get the back box and LVS32 set, that is unfortunately 3 times the price.
So you need to have the .GPX file in the Garmin folder on your SD Card and then from there turn on your unit with the card in and you can go to the data import section like in this video and import them. Let me know if that's still not working!
Thank you and good question! The only thing I know for sure is that Chromebooks don't run Garmin Express, but I do know you can still update Maps and copy over GPX files etc. If you can install activecaptain on your Chromebook from the Google store then that should work as well. In my videos I'm using Windows 10 so unfortunately I can't test a Chromebook myself. Hope that helps!
I just purchased an echomap 93SV. Does anyone know how I get a Pointer on the map that points to my goto destination? I can’t find it in the overlay menu. Thanks
I believe this is what you mean... go to the destination you want on the map and select it, then the little menu pops up, select Navigate To and then Go To and it will create a magenta line to your destination from your current position. Does that help?
@@DanRichardFishing Appreciate the reply, I called Garmin this morning and spoke to Ellen (very pleasant lady) she checked and let me know that what I’m looking for isn’t offered in this model. On long runs it’s much easier for me to look at a pointer to stay straight. The older model garmin and lowrance offer this. Trying to stay on the line drains my energy. The only pointer it has is if you choose “Guages” and use the yellow arrow on the compass.
Mr. Richard, thank you for the wonderful video. I created waypoints and copy to SD card and inserted to my UHD93sv unit. then click nav info --> manage data . I can't find data transfer option. can you help me please
It should be Nav Info > Manage Data > Data Transer > Merge from Card. It should look like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zuZBZvRD9H8.html
I watched a couple of your videos and helped me load waypoints from Google Earth to my Garmin, Good Job!! Homeport is no longer available from Garmin, do you have an alternative program for manipulating waypoints? Also an alternative action to buying and using Garmin Ultra for calculating fluctuating lake levels is depth shading. If a lake is down 5' then change all your shading by 5'. 0-5 being dirt.
Also just FYI, instead of copying and pasting every coordinate to GPS visualizer I chose my saved file from Google Earth and is converted every GPS coordinate along with the name I named it.
Glad you like the videos, thank you! For Homeport you can still download and use it even though Garmin no longer offers support on it. It's a shame they dumped it with no replacement. Thanks for the comment!
Do you mean with Homeport? Absolutely, I found a nice guide on how to do that here: theboatgalley.com/route-planning-garmin-home-port/ Scroll down a little and is explains how :)
Great video. Any issues using a Mac instead that you know of? Just bought two 93Sv UHD’s. If they are linked together do you have to still update both?
Hi Matt! I am not aware of any issues related to Mac as far as comments and feedback go, but I trust a Mac to do what it should about as far as I can throw it if I'm being honest lol! In terms of updating, yes you do have to update both units separately, but do bear in mind you should be able to do the two UHDs via the Active Captain app. I was hoping to do a video on this, but my 95SV Plus actually died on my a few weeks ago. Video about that coming lol! Thanks for the comment and questions, tight lines!
Unfortunately no, the Garmin units do not allow you to create custom icons much to my disappointment. You can only use the ones that are currently in the unit.
Fortunately you can still download and use it although as you said if anything goes wrong with it, Garmin is no longer updating it. Seems a little crazy that they dumped the software yet there is no replacement for it 🤔
Hey Dan good morning, I’m trying to learn how to read and understand my Garmin fish finder, can you help and explain? When looking at the screen? Are the fish straight down or are they to the left or right when you see fish on the screen? Appreciate your knowledge, Frank.
Hi Frank, this is a tough one to answer as a reply to your comments because there are sooooo many variables. This year I will be making videos on how to read your sonar so hopefully you'll find that very useful. Basically you're looking for arches when scanning for fish or distinct fish on bottom with separation. On DV you'll see spots (air bladders) and on SV if I am being honest, I don't see fish unless they are HUGE with my Garmin units. I am told you see fish with UHD transducers and the Ultra units, but I can't confirm it. So I promise to have more videos this year on using your units out on the water!
@@DanRichardFishing awesome Thank you Dan, I really do appreciate you making time to reply. I’m a Retired Military guy so I have time to go fishing but I’m learning as I go with the electronics. So believe me your videos help, I’ve learned how to update my fish finder and a couple other things with your videos; so thank you.
@@franksanchez834 It's my pleasure Frank, and thank you so much for serving. I have tremendous respect for veterans and law enforcement as I have both in my family. I've got lots more Garmin videos coming and as soon as I'm back on the water this spring, I'll do videos on reading sonar. There is also a really cool forum called the BBC Boards (Bass Boat Central) and they have a great sub forum dedicated to image interpretation on Garmin sonars at www.bbcboards.net/forumdisplay.php?f=209 (you may have to register before you can see that link) and it's an amazing way to learn about what things look like on your sonar. Been a member here for years! All the best and thanks again for the comments :)
