In this video I scientifically review and test the Garmin Venu 2 Plus. I test the sleep tracking, heart rate accuracy, SpO2, oxygen saturation and GPS accuracy. I also compare the Garmin Venu 2 Plus against the Garmin Venu 2, Garmin Vivomove Sport and Apple Watch Series 7. The Garmin Venu 2 Plus is quite good at heart rate tracking, though surprisingly it is not as good as the Garmin Venu 2 that I tested in a previous video. The Apple Watch is a really good heart rate tracker, and it basically outperforms all other watches when it comes to heart rate accuracy. The Garmin Vivomove sport performed much better as a sleep tracker, which is surprising, given that it is much cheaper.
Intro: With the new Garmin Venu 2 Plus, Garmin is moving more and more into full smartwatch territory, as the Venu 2 Plus now includes a speaker and microphone, allowing you to take calls on your wrist and integrating voice assistants. However, the price-tag is also higher, with a release price of 450 dollars, which is even more than what you pay for the baseline model of the latest Apple Watch. The release price is also 50 dollars more than the very similar Garmin Venu 2. So, is the Venu 2 Plus worth that kind of money?
I will scientifically test the accuracy of the different features of the Garmin Venu 2 Plus. I will look at the sleep tracking, heart rate measurements, oxygen saturation measurements and GPS accuracy. I will also compare it to the “normal” Garmin Venu 2 and the Apple Watch 7, and finally I’ll briefly compare it to the new and much cheaper Garmin Vivomove Sport. Spoiler, the Vivomove Sport actually vastly outperformed the Garmin Venu 2 Plus in one area.
Conclusion:
However, taking into account all features, I have mixed feelings about the Garmin Venu 2 Plus. The original Venu 2 performed better at heart rate tracking when I tested that a few months back, even though the sensors are the same as those in the Venu 2 Plus. I am not sure if anything changed internally in the watch that could cause some interference or if something changed in the processing of the signal. Alternatively, it could be just a fluke, and with more testing it could perform better. Still, the Venu 2 Plus is among some of the better wrist-worn heart rate trackers out there. On the other hand, the sleep tracking is pretty bad, and weirdly the much cheaper Garmin Vivomove Sport performs consistently better.
Nevertheless, if you are a runner or a cyclist, and you want to track your heart rate and your GPS position, I think the Garmin Venu 2 Plus is a good choice. However, since personally I do not really use the voice assistant integration, and I am also not a fan of taking calls from my wrist and playing music on a watch, I would rather opt for the original Venu 2, which you can probably find for 100 dollars less than the Venu 2 Plus. If you are an android user, you might actually also want to take a look at the Huawei Watch GT 3, which has great heart rate tracking and that video is linked here. If you want the best smartwatch experience and great heart rate tracking, the Apple Watch 7 is an even better choice. However, the Apple Watch has much poorer battery life and also requires an iPhone.

Thank you for your work, it's such a value for so many who are looking for anything more professional and reliable than countless subjective reviews after one fashion. Wondering whether it would be possible to re-visit Venu 2 plus with 8.05 beta firmware update? Users in the forums seem to notice improvements in, among others, sleep tracking and gps accuracy.

I own a Garmin Approach S62, fenix 5, and now use a Fenix 6 Pro Solar. I feel the fenix 6 is better at everything that they have in common except the sleep stages. I’m glad you seem to be getting the same type results I’ve been getting. I seem to either get deep sleep or rem but hardly ever both in the same night.

Thanks for an interesting review of the Venu 2 plus. There are some things I'm trying to figure out and I can't find a better place to ask: - For keeping track of general health and fitness (walking, hiking, biking, pilates, weights, ...) are the ecosystems equal? - We have treadmill desks, does the step tracking work if you're walking and typing (on either Apple or Garmin)? - Is the Garmin stress measurement useful or just noise? - Does the Garmin have a count down timer? (making tea is sometimes more important that fitness)

The sleep algorithms are also tuned to the watches accelerometers and heart sensors. Also, the data is never done on the device itself but sent to Garmin Connect then processed. I have had several different Garmin watches and each was different on the sleep monitoring and improved over time (month to two months) before being very accurate. Consider it the device "getting to know you", while it can access other data from Connect it does not pull in previous sleep data or tracking, only your habits with steps and factors you setup. For sleep and body battery are both on that scale of, gets better the more you wear it. When strength training you will have HR issues as its wrist based and when you are using that wrist for lifting or movement it can lift the watch from the skin or the muscle tightens over the blood flow its monitoring. I have both the Fenix 6 pro and an Apple watch. I prefer some functions and screen of the AW but Garmin has way more information for you to go with. Hoping I can score an Epix soon to have a mix of both.

Thanks so much for all these videos Rob. Topic request (and it doesn't cost you money!!) - would love to see you dig out some of those devices and test them in different locations. Seen on some Miband threads people recommending wearing it on the inside of the wrist, others saying to wear it on bicep or ankle and so on. Be interesting to see if putting the sensors somewhere else makes a difference to performance.

Really a nice work with your reviews! Informative, on point and consistent tests - your body, your route, your routine. Please, keep the good work! 👍 Based on channel reviews I switched from Fenix 5x to Apple Watch and I can confirm your results, excluding the eeg tests. The watch almost perfectly agrees with external hr monitor and pulse ox. The sleep cycle app, also reviewed from you, gives me good overview of my sleep and I can only assume that it’s good enough to get the job done.

I love the depth of these comparison. One thing I would like to see is the head to head comparison of the same device worn simultaneously on two different arms. Would be interesting to see how repeatable the data is for a model. Also, was the data for the venu 2 using the release firmware or the most recent firmware? I'm curious if you've done a comparison and observed any change in performance on the venu 2 based on firmware.

You deserve way more subs 👍🏽 Looking forward to the fenix 7 review, and with regards to sleep tracking you should really check some of the Polar devices as e.g. Vantage2, Ignite etc. What I would love to hear about is your opinion on apps like HRV4training or running stress score by Stryd powermeter vs HR training load by Garmin etc. just in case you need some ideas for new videos 😂

I have pretty mixed feelings. On the one hand, I've just ordered this model with an honest belief that it's a very good purchase for the future. Especially, since I've never had smartwatches, so I decided to go "crazy" and buy something very new and stylish. Plus, I am very interested in the sleep tracking function, so my frustration is pretty immeasurable right now 🙂 On the other hand, the video itself is very good and I really appreciate your effort and attention to detail. Hi Dawid! First off, thanks for being such a long-term sub! Yes, I might do something like this. However, I have been getting some small rashes from wearing the devices all day on my wrists, so I only wear them during sport and sleep at the moment, to give my arms some recovery time. @@TheQuantifiedScientist Hi Rob, I can easily develop a rash from literally every smartwatch I have used so far, and what helps me, is to buy oversized elastic straps that I can move above my elbow for my trainings (kind of Polar OH1 style). When not training I wear the watch on my wrist just as normal and this solution works like magic for more than a year now, no rash at all. I also tend to get better accuracy with this for HR measurement. Although not sure if this fits to your testing method :) Brilliant videos by the way, keep going!

However, I'm using the old Mi Band for basic sleep tracking and have an idea of switching to Garmin to do sleep tracking as well e.g. 1 main Garmin 1 smaller Garmin for sleeping. @SilentG20

Thank you so much for bringing scientific integrity to the world of reviewing tech! Especially these things that nobody else has been measuring as they should. A couple of questions: 1. Why didn't you do an oxygen saturation test with the Apple Watch 7? 2. Why does the video thumbnail say "Apple Watch killer" when it's apparently not as precise or good as the Apple Watch - it's even more expensive! *and I have a suggestion for you that you might like: Nobody is able or even cares to test certain technologies' impact on our health. For example: AMOLED vs LCD eyestrain? Influence on melatonin production? etc. Another example: earbuds, in-ear or otherwise, impact on hearing? Or different devices or apps influence on attention/ADHD? There are so many things to test that attentive consumers have just given up on testing! We just have to trust whatever our favourite manufacturer makes next.

Hi Rob, great review again, you are gathering serious amounts of smartwatch data 😀! Regarding the HR tracking, is there a difference in the strap and tightness on the wrist of the Apple watch vs e.g. this watch? Or does not play a significant role in HR tracking? Groeten, Sander
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 2 года назад
Hi Sander! Dankjewel! So, yes, for many watches there can be a difference in accuracy depending on how tightly you wear it. However, from what I read, Apple tried to make sure the Apple Watch was accurate under most circumstances. The idea was that most people do not like to wear their watch tight, so the development team was told they should make it work. However, this was just an article I read online, so take that with a grain of salt 😊

From one scientist to another: Since we know that accuracy is maximum with smaller watches why not measure all metrics with Venu 2s or any other “s” models instead of a model just because it came out fresh? After a number of years on The Vivoactive thru the Vivoactive 3, I switched to Fitbit. The no. 1 reason was sleep tracking. The Garmin's were useless. I may give the Venu 2 a go because my data is much more accessible and usable on the Garmin platform. I'll keep using the Fitbit on my non dominant wrist for sleep tracking. No one wearable does everything well. It's all about compromises.
@TheQuantifiedScientist

I agree... Unfortunately there is not device that does it all at the moment... Hopefully Apple will up it's sleep tracking gaming, but that would still leave all non-apple users without a good device (and the battery life kind of sucks). The Whoop strap is also reasonably good across the board, but quite expensive with the subscription model.

@@cusebike5391 Well, I've directly compared a Charge 4 and a Venu 2 Plus and personally found neither to seemingly be very accurate, but I will say the Fitbit did do a bit better at my wake-up time, though I can edit that so not too big of a deal. Long term maybe the Fitbit will be more accurate, but for instance one night I had a terrible sleep and the Fitbit gave me a 91 sleep score and the Garmin said 79.

O2 saturation was also inaccurate compared with a professional oximeter. However the GPS function is surprisingly good and it keeps the time!

Good afternoon. I recently bought a Garmin Venu 2 Plus model. I love it and it has everything I need. There is one problem, can you tell me what the essence is. It's about paying with Garmin Pay. I watched earlier reviews in which bloggers claimed that after the watch is put on the hand and the code is entered before payment, then in subsequent times if the watch was not removed, the code does not need to be entered. After entering the code, I still have the opportunity to pay without entering the code for 10 minutes, and then the watch asks for the code again. I deleted and relinked the card but it did not help. I tightened the belt tightly so that the watch always touched the hand, but it did not help. Is it a marriage or raw firmware? It seems that the sensor periodically does not see the watch on the hand? What do you think about this? I really hope you can give me some advice. Reply

I'm stuck. Thought I had found a phone with the Venu 2. Put off by the Fitbit charge with their subscription. Your data indicates Apple is more accurate but don't want to be forced to IOS (shame they don't market an Android one). £300 is still a lot for me and happy with the standard Venu 2 but if accuracy is still off which is the whole point not sure if it's worth waiting and seeing what the Venu 3 brings but could be a wait? Good video.

I have a Venu 2 and noticed that since the last software update I also have an issue with HR way too high at the beginning of an indoor cycle ride. Also sleep tracking seems to have gone awry. It keeps telling me that my stress is high during sleep which is not correct. However, if HR is not correct then the stress measurement will not be correct because it is based on HRV.

Hey Rob.

Don't know which HR sensor is in the vivomove sport but it seems like a recent model. And I don't see why the algorithms that process the sensor data would be different. So assuming both are the same, but wore differently... We may have an explanation on why results differ? My watch def sits differently on my right wrist and the dominant wrist is slightly bigger as well which could influence HR readings.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 2 года назад
Hi! The HR accuracy actually seems better on the Venu 2 Plus when I just quickly checked, so not sure. Maybe it is the movement, or maybe I paired the Vivomove sport with an account that already had data from a previous device, so it could train the algorithm better. I have to check a bunch of things to find out I guess🧪

I have a Garmin and apart from sleep/awake detection it's not particularly useful lots of missed REM and deep sleep. Unfortunately my other smart watch is a TicWatch Pro 3 and sleep detection is even worse on that. Btw, was that a sneaky clip from the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra review where you were talking about the watch slipping around? I haven't had that problem with the Garmin as the strap adjustments are finer but definitely on the TWP3U, the adjustments are huge on the stock strap

I had a garmin 245 music for 2 years. Sleep tracking seemed fair. Got a venu 2 in november and it literally doesnt track any rem sleep at all. Ive tried fitbit too and that seemed way better at tracking my sleep. Other than the weird rem sleep error I think the watch is great for allround tracking your fitness, but it feels like the sleep track has gotten worse on the venu compared to my 245. Either Ive had under 5 hours of REM in 2 months or the venu is not tracking right. I also tried to tighten the band and whatnot.

I have 3 garmin's, vivoactive 4s, vivosmart 4 and forerunner 745. The vivosmart 4 is best for sleep tracking, very comfortable and light. The accuracy is comparable to my samsung active, which is mostly accurate, but none are perfect. For sleep tracking I mostly use the samsung with a more comfortable aftermarket strap, because it tracks naps, which garmin still doesn't do. For best tracking, I find that a good fitting strap makes a massive difference.

thanks for review. in the past I had bad experience with Garmin vivosmart 4 (spo2 / hr / sleep was of poor accuracy) and don't recommend it. It seems manufacturer just going to make money on these new devices, investing most of money into marketing and doesn't bother too much on improving accuracy of outcome data. $450 for device with so poor sleep tracking is a shame... Also I've updated my data of Fitbit Charge 5, Dreem 2 and Oura 2.0 if you interested (last posts on my blog). Fitbit Charge 5 seems keep leadership in wrist sleep trackers (but it still not accurate, even ~70-75% is far from precise sleep tracking)
