A comparison of 2 some what similar satnav systems the Carpe a more Rally based product and the Galaxy active Tab 3 a more trail, TET and road use product.
NOTE: The connection for the OBD2 sensors run on Bluetooth (not WiFi as stated) Also the Carpe tablet may be a TRIPLTEK 7 inch( not a Samsung as stated)

( I have a lifetime purchase for this and think it has now changed to subscription based, so maybe not so useful)

Great video. When I was riding I was considering getting an Active3. A couple of extra bits of information which I hope someone will find useful: 1) For a cheaper mount consider a Quadlock universal adapter on the back of the Active3 case. It certainly won't be as good a solution as this but may be good for someone on a budget. 2) There is an LTE version of the Active3 and unlike other LTE tablets this one does have an ear speaker. So it can completely replace your phone. This is very useful for a travel tablet because it can act as a complete backup if your phone breaks or is stolen. 3) Unlike other tablets this will work without a battery. So if you only use it on the bike then you can remove the battery to keep the battery healthy. Obviously it needs a USB power source though. 4) You can get bluetooth OBDC adapters. Plug the OBDC sensor into the OBDC port on the bike or car and then use software on the tablet to read it. 5) I'm not sure how integrated this would be but you can get bluetooth "buttons" to put on the handlebars and use these for some controls such as accepting calls, moving to next music track, etc. It probably won't help much with navigation software but may be useful to some people.

Don't forget to fix you Ram mount upside down if you don't want water on your charging pins. Water and electric connectors don't like each other 😉😉

For OBD connection, you can stick an OBD Bluetooth dongle on the bike and the tablet can recognize it and read its values through BT. Works great with the OEM tablet of PR7. Just get one which turns itself off :)

Thank you for the video. I am planning to build such a system on my next bike to replace TomTom and it was great to see a biker who has already done this and confirms that it all works :)

Thanks for this - it was just the review I needed at the moment as I am torn between Garmin Zumo XT and the Carpe Iter. Your review has given me food for thought (and has me scratching my head even more!😀). I liked your explanation of the two systems - it was very clear and succinct. Cheers, Phil.

Yes, important to note the Carpe Iter is just he hardware. DMD can run on any android device. Pretty sure OBD sensors also show up on any device. Unless something has changed in the last few months. Just need the right DMD dongle thing. My factory PR7 screen shows all the functions that the bike supports, through the DMD screen. The bikes OBD output is a limiting factor, not all data available. Maybe the Carpe Iter is overkill. It’s very robust and removable. As you know the PR7 tablet really isn’t removable, and barring any electrical engineering, can’t be charged off the bike. Your system does seem like an excellent intermediate setup.

Yes, all you say is true. I like the Tab 3 as I can down load all my own mapping and have the stability of Samsung behind me.

Hi thanks for the video. What is your result after testing it for one year? Could you read the display properly during sunlight? You can also easily connect the buttons from carpe iter or any other bluetooth controller via bluetooth but I think you already found out. Thanks for your work, I appreciate it!

The Carpe has 1000nits of brightness, about double the Active 3. Thats the pudding. I run a big rugged 6.8inch smarthphone in an wireless mount that I can take of the bike in 5 seconds. Cheap and fast solution, but only 6.8 inches. I guess you have to compromise somewhere trying to protect the travelpurse.

So how do you have the RAM mount on your bike? Is it connected to the handlebars? Is it covering the dash? Have you done a relocation of the dash? I have thought of doing the same thing on my bike but it's winter here still so not much happening at the moment, but it would be nice to see how you have mounted it on your bike for inspiration. :) Great video.
@FitBones

Hi, Apologies for late response. I haven't got a picture to show you as my bike is on route to Greece ready for the Hellas Rally. However, its an AJP PR7 which comes with a mounted tablet but its very slow and difficult to remove. So, I removed the OEM mount and fitted my own hand made metal plate on the the original mount. I then bolted on a Ram ball and off we go. Every bike will be a little different, but the ram mount for the Tab 3 should be pretty simple to mount on anything. The dash on the PR7 is just really a small speedo and the tablet does not interfere with seeing this. Also, just to clarify as I have notice a lot of people discussing this point. The Carpe has its own mapping system I DO NOT use this. I down load my own maps using Co-pilot and Guru maps. These 2 mapping systems will get you around the world on or off road.

I have just setup my active tab on my bike, it great. Have you found a way to turn the tablet on and off with the ignition, while still using the battery. I know that you can run it without a battery from direct power, but i would leave the battery in the device.

I know you Brits dont get a ton of sunshine like over here in the States, but how is the brightness/glare etc? I'm told a few blokes can't use their Galaxy Active 3 tablets as it's unreadable/unuseable in the sunshine so they went with different GPS solutions all together.

Thanks for the great video. Quick question, what sort of Ram system are you using to attach the 1 inch ball? Is it sturdy enough to support the Ram casing and tablet? Do you use the Ram rubber ball system for vibration dampener?
@FitBones

Yes , I use a 1 inch Ram ball, and solid mount. Will be using this for the Hellas Rally and for the Albanian TET, super solid

Hello - thanks for the info has helped me a lot. First wanted to buy the Carp - but after your review I decided to buy the tablet. What would be helpful (this is not a criticism just a comment) if you would list all the components that you have installed. I do not know what connection you have from RAM Mounts EZ-Roll'r Powered Cradle to the bike, have looked at RAM but found nothing. Thanks
@FitBones
@FitBones Год назад
The RAM mount I used was the EZ-Roll r powered cradle, which I then plugged into a charging point USB - A I had installed. This allowed power direct to the cradle and pins. Also if the pins failed in heavy rain I could also use a USB -A to USB-C direct into the tablet. Both ways worked

8gb ram VS 4gb ram is a very big difference… and software management for Cooling the batterycharge which the carpe iter has and Samsung not , big battery , very good gps 5 times a second… brightness of 1000nits , i think the Samsung has not… Maybe 600 so future wise i think you need two tablets against one carpe iter in the years you will own it.

@FitBones
@FitBones 13 дней назад
The GPS works without a SIM. I don’t have a SIM in mine. I fly with an iPad for my GPS and it has NO sim. You only need a sim if you’re looking to download or use data without WiFi . Always download your maps, apps and data on WiFi. Once downloaded you can open use freely. The tablet with provide GPS where there is no telephone signal or WiFi so long as it can access the sky for the GPS signal. So it wont work indoors.

@FitBones

Its the same as your phone, it has GPS receivers and place for a SIM card. Has all the built in sensors for tracking. No data use as you have your maps downloaded and its simply picking up the satellite signal to track against your moving map

Hi Luis, Having checked out the data on the Tripltek I think its the bees knees... as they say. The high screen resolution is there, as well as high speed Ram and increased tablet storage with facility for 1 TB. Pretty high spec bit of gear me thinks.

How is the vibration with that Ram mount? I'm thinking, regarding my Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro, how exactly to mount it, above the current TFT, in a way to not have to remove the windshield and not have it bounce around to much...direct mount to a cross bar used to raise and lower the windshield etc.....
@larsihle9256
@larsihle9256 8 месяцев назад
I had a custom mount made for my Tiger 900 rp for mounting my zumo xt but I'll be switching to this recommended tab active 3 with ram locking mount in the next few weeks. I'll report back. Sooner if snow stays away here in central Oregon, or later if snow returns.

@Gazza13
@Gazza13 Год назад
your assessment is 100 5 incorrect... it is NOT aimed at rally racing at all. If you do a lot of off-road riding . you soon realise that standard tablets will not survive the vibration and abuse.. hence the military grade device which is excellent.
@FitBones
@FitBones Год назад
The Galaxy Tab 3 in fact has a higher military grading than the CARPE ITER, SO I AM CORRECT 100%
@gianlucajandelli6387
@gianlucajandelli6387 11 месяцев назад
@@FitBones Thanks for the video. However, there is some truth in what @Gazza13 was saying. The CI Pad is better for off-road and it does not depend on the military grade: usb is not good enough and prone to break, M8 plug is vastly superior, button controls allow you to keep your hands on handlebar on off-road,...
