Garrett AT Pro Early Victorian Metal Detecting Hunt

In this treasure hunt I search a late 1890's Victorian style home that has been hidden in the orange groves for over a hundred years. I'm looking for anything & everything old. Turned out not to be what I expected but very interesting nonetheless & saved myself many regrets by getting permission to hunt here. I would have edited it better but my movie maker app missing... Sorry.

I was so upset thinking that they were going to tear down that house. I'm so glad that you said that they weren't. It's such a beautiful home. Whoever owns it is so blessed to have it.

Thank you for proving what I have been saying since I started metal detecting.... No matter how expensive your metal detector is you do not know what is in the ground until you dig it up!! This is old technology and cannot progress further. PERIOD

I am very happy you mentioned the house was not being demolished. As you said too many old houses are just destroyed with out even salvaging the irreplaceable workmanship of the buildings. I lived in a 1900s Victorian house that was illegally demolished and all the fine craftsmanship and antique fixings were lost.

Hit it after the demo chances are there was a dwelling on the same site where the family first built & lived, often times the Victorian home was built once financial stability was established. If they scrape the lot after the demo you will likely find older artifacts once the top soil is removed.

Everything was pretty quick except the dig. Now you always should be careful but a garden spade? Spud shovels with a narrow blade.. You can stand up and dig. Also when your Dog Craps, Make a Crap Hole, Again Standing... The Finds Come Quick, The Dig Is soooo SLOW>>>>> I also see you did not ground your pinpointer. Did you ground your Ace before detecting? Thumbs up on the location... Working a Vic.. Near Portland Oregon, Already taken down.. Found the four corner stones, Found 4 rosies and a 1960 quarter.. A few wheaties.. and I was there 15 min.. I always run the at pro in pro zero mode with iron audio. At first the noise can be a little confusing but once you get used to it, its a dream in trashy areas. You can also pick up deeper signals in pro zero mode if youre using headphones.
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 8 лет назад
I've tried that before & you're right - it's noisy. But, I've also learned to do that very same thing with my Tek Delta 4K & it's paid high rewards. So I plan on taking your advice & just tuff it out until I get used to it because there is no substitute for using my own brain to discriminate targets instead of letting the machine do the work for me.

We drove passed this house for months & never knew it was there until it was suddenly uncovered from the surrounding orange groves. What a beauty! Then within just a few weeks all the groves were ripped out, the house was moved & the new housing tract was going up. God knows these old houses are awesome. I've had more views from this one video than all my other metal detecting combined. I think it's the house!

@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 6 лет назад
Matt Eastman Matt Eastman it’s hard to beat any Teknetics! I use the Tek Delta 4000. I’ve used it side by side against one high end Whites machine, a garrett ace 150, ace 250 & at-pro. The only machine out of those four others that has any advantage over the tek d4k is the ATPro & that simply because it out powers the Teknetics with greater depth ability. Have you ever experienced anything so real that everything others said about it was pure noise? I’ve found tens of thousands of great targets with my d4k & I will challenge anyone to out hunt me with my Teknetics. If they can find more good targets in the same amount of time on the same property on the same day I’ll give them a fresh ten dollar bill. I’m sure countless fanboys will argue with me on this but talk is cheap & noise is noise. The Garrett AT Pro is a great machine compared to most & more powerful than my Teknetics, but I can hunt circles around an at pro with my Teknetics in the top 4” of soil. Ask me how I know for sure? I own them both & use them regularly. Hope that helps...

@MrThedocholiday 4 года назад
I have two Teknetics Delta 4000 machines & one Garrett AT Pro. The Tek D4K is in my opinion the best machine for your money but it lacks depth & features that higher end machines offer. I have literally found everything with my D4K & I can also tell you I think it’s the best machine for beginners because of the absolute accuracy of the target ID feature compared to Whites, Garrett & Fisher. I’ve literally found tens of thousands of great targets with my delta 4000 within a five year period. And this was not full time either. I was running my own roofing business at the time during that period, so it’s not like I spend every day detecting. I’ve found British coppers dating back to 1700’s, gold, silver, coins, jewelry, diamond ring, & everything in between. Then, several times after using the D4K I detected some of the same areas & still found more goodies with my Garrett AT Pro at greater depth. That’s about all I can say. They’re both great machines but the D4K is faster & has a more accurate target ID than anything else in the market while the AT Pro has more power at depth & more features.

Remark about corrupt banking practices being the result of our having zinc coins... went over my head... what is that about? Never heard that story.
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 6 лет назад
Ginchiest1 Okay so first question... Why was silver removed from our larger currency? Second question... Why was copper removed from our smaller currency? Today's pennies are a mere skin of semi-expensive copper filled with worthless zinc. Today's larger coins are comprised of relatively worthless alloys instead of valuable silver like they used to be. The same goes for gold coinage. Gold was removed from circulation altogether & now we even have bronze coinage to resemble gold. So why have precious metals & semi-precious metals been removed from all our coinage & relatively worthless metals been substituted in their place? We'll, there are actually several reasons for this, but not the least of which is the government's obligation to make good on their promise of currency value to the public they serve. And, the government's beholden obligation to the banks that fund government functions... The central bankers tell politicians what to do based on central bank practices of investing & minting of currency & whenever bankers can substitute leeser valued currency for higher valued currency & convince politicians to legislate such substitution in order to profit from that substitution, they will do so. And substitution of worthless metals for precious & semi-precious metals in currency is a major profit swap for those who mint our coinage; especially on the scale of coinage supplied to our population today. So if the govt & central banks profit by swapping worthless currency for inherently more valuable currency, who loses out in this value swap? The public, that's who. How? By having the inherently valuable precious metals removed from our currency, the value of our currency goes down. This is called "Inflation". Ever heard of it or wonder what causes inflation? Now you know. This is the primary reason why a twenty dollar gold piece from 1933 is worth 1300+ dollars today... Because the value of the paper dollar has decreased by approx. 7 thousand percent if my math serves me correctly. This was not only intentional on behalf of central banks & government, it was done deceptively, under the guise of what was necessary & good for the public at the time. This has happened to all our coin currency & now even with our paper currency, but in a slightly different way. This is the corruption I was referring to in my video & it is well documented throughout history with all governments.

Yeah, I have two very special hunts under my belt where I found coin hoards (Off camera) on properties developed in similar time eras. One property (1924) produced a large coin hoard of nineteen vintage coins - one of them dating back to 1739 - three of which were British Coppers & one an LC. So you never know where these amazing treasures may be hiding until you hunt - satellite dish or not. Thanks for watching...

What do you mean by clad quarter
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 11 месяцев назад
The Red Book of US coins can be way more helpful than my brief explanation, but I’ll give it a shot in the meantime. By “clad” quarters I mean quarters minted after 1964 that are made of a copper core which is clad or encased with cupronickel on the outside. Cupronickel is made of 75% nickel & 25% copper. Clad quarters have zero silver content in them so they have little worth compared to silver quarters. 1964 & earlier quarters are made of 90% silver & 10% copper. These are not considered “clad” but rather silver quarters & are way more valuable than clad quarters. Hope that helps.

In a lot of housing developments, a large victorian house, usually brick, is used as an office for the contractor, or storage space for collectible tools, and furniture. They may rent it out to a family member who is homeless, or may sell it to a groundskeeper.

I get it... cockiness gets old real fast & really shows what's in a person's heart. On the other hand Jocelyn's pretty cool. I really dig her song, "I dug it up" because It tells the story of the passion of treasure hunting that only those who catch the bug understand. On another note, I'm planning to do some serious hunts in the next couple years on multiple late 1800's homestead properties - one of which is nearly 4 acres & unlimited access. Planning to record every hunt but it's gonna take some time before I can upload them. Lord willing everything will work out so stay tuned. Thanks for your response.

@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 6 лет назад
I.W.C Chennur it depends entirely on the size of the targets... Sure, it will pickup an engine block 25” down, but who metal detects engine blocks? See what I’m saying? Most people detect coin-size targets or slightly larger. The ATPro can detect coins about 10” down. The other thing that nobody talks about is discrimination... You have to either discriminate with your own senses or tune the machine to discriminate for you. There is a ton of targets to discriminate in the ground under your coil the deeper you go. While the atpro is great at picking up those targets it takes a long time & a lot of practice discriminating out those targets with your own senses. The only other option is to tune the machine to discriminate for you & risk missing good targets down deep. Does that make sense?

I.W.C Chennur Makro Jeohunter is designed as a deep seeking detector. First, you have to know what you’re hunting for & at what depth you’re likely to find it. The last silver quarter I found was about 4” down on an 1880 property. Coins & other heavy object typically sink about an inch per decade depending on soil type & conditions. It is rare to have a need to hunt more than 10” down - unless of course you’re hunting beach sand for gold jewelry. Most of the valuables lost in the last century are within 12” inches from the surface. Not only that but if you hunt deep you have to have the will to retrieve those targets. Digging 12” down for every potential good signal can burn a person out on detecting. While the treasure hunting bug can become feverish, you still need endurance for the long haul & most of us find that by using lightweight hand tools & machines that can hunt & retrieve quickly within the top ten inches of soil are preferred. Any deeper than that & you better pack a lunch, bring your bug spray, carry water for cleaning & rehydration, bring a heavier deep digging shovel & have the willpower to not only work hard retrieving, but also work hard to replace the earth that you dig. Now, as far as zeroing any unit goes... Just follow the instructions in the manual & test your machine after zeroing it. Practice is king in this hobby!

@MrThedocholiday 7 лет назад
Do you mean big according to size or big according to value? I usually don't dig the larger targets, but the most valuable target ever was an 18K gold ring with a 1/3 carat diamond in it. I found it 3 inches down in the dry sand at Carpenteria state beach in CA.

may be a dumb question, but how do you tell the diff between the copper and zinc pennies?
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 8 лет назад
It's not a dumb question... The zincs ring in at 76 & the coppers ring in at 82 on the ID's of both the Garrett AT Pro & the Teknetics Delta 4000. Occasionally the numbers vary a little but not much more than a digit or two. The Teknetics has a more accurate & consistent ID than the AT Pro but it's not as deep or as powerful at depth.

That's the way it's been told. I don't believe in that stuff but that's what people say. It was some old thing told by my ancestors. Usually bury the spoon by the water for good luck. If someone digs it up, they have to bury a new one or they'll break the chain of good luck. Yours wasn't found by the water though.

@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 8 лет назад
You've never heard the term recent past? I did a hunt in the local mountains & the iron was so bad that no matter how much I tuned it down I still couldn't hear the good signals through the iron. I'm used to Running my machine wide open but I can't do that with the Garrett cause it's too sensitive.

@MrThedocholiday 7 лет назад
If you're gonna get two machines get at least one Garrett AT Pro & possibly the Teknetics Delta 4000, or a second AT Pro. The Teknetics Delta 4000 is the best machine for the money but they interfere with one another. My buddy & I used to go out with two Delta 4K's & we couldn't hunt within fifty feet of each other. The AT Pro is the best machine in it's class as far as I'm concerned but the Delta 4K is the best machine for the money - almost as good as the AT Pro itself & that's not to take anything away from the AT Pro. But the AT Pro is a $500 machine while the Tek Delta 4K is a $280 machine.

To me a copper penny is a bad target lol I’m hunting Silver
@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 3 года назад
The copper penny signals always indicate that there are potential great targets remaining there. It’s not the penny itself. It’s the value of the target signal. Experienced detectorists know this. Newbies don’t. Newbies just want the best targets quickly. They don’t want to put in the hard work necessary to discover & preserve history. They just want the glory without the discipline. But experienced detectorists know the value of a good target ID. That’s the point here.

@@MrThedocholiday I am both a coin collector and a metals stacker. Of course i love gold and silver, but i will also save all the copper and nickel i can find as well. All targets are worth digging in my opinion. Any copper target could be a wheat, Indian or even better.

@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 7 лет назад
Don't know about the Ace 350 but I hunted with a guy who had an Ace 250 & the refresh rate of the AT Pro seems much faster. It's just slightly slower than my Tek Delta 4K. Just an aside, the Tek Delta 4K has about the fastest refresh rate in the industry, but I digress. The AT Pro has a faster refresh rate than the other entry level Ace models, is waterproof, does well around saltwater & goes deeper than anything else in it's price range. Hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching.

@MrThedocholiday
@MrThedocholiday 7 лет назад
You may be right friend, but I'd be willing to challenge anyone to a 30 minute hunt-off with my Tek against any other machine & I'd bet a twenty dollar bill that I could retrieve more good targets in the trash than anyone using another machine. But I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, "When I get used to my AT Pro it will leave my Tek in the dark". The last two times out my AT Pro has performed flawlessly in the trash & just about as fast as my Tek. So I think it's mostly a matter of what I'm used to. You get the same thing in firearms training... It's partly the tool you use & partly your training with that particular tool. Thanks for watching & for the advice... No chance I'll be turning in my acme hand shovel for something larger that I have to lug around though... Merry Christmas!
