I kept thinking, "when do we get to the Downtown area?", and then I realised this was it. There isn't even a barely-beating heart from which you might coax some life. It's sad to see such a once thriving town enduring such neglect.
Lidia AF Haha, you blithering idiot, not a good place to move to, are you kidding me, you must be on some good drugs, pal, geezus are you that stupid???
The Gary of my youth so sadly no longer exists - all cities change over time, but the steep decline of Gary is painful to see. And, yes, I understand why - don't like it, but understand it.
My hometown has had little change since 1950. Small town USA particularly in the center of the US has had only minor changes at best. Just ask anyone born in a small town in IOWA in the early 50's. My hometown got a new hospital ,a new high school , a new library and a new bridge across the Mississippi River. And that sums up all the important changes. The .population has remained virtually constant for the last 80 years.
I have to hold back the tears every time I see my hometown on RU-vid... People still don't understand my PTSD from Gary and no one but other people who made it out of Gary even give a fuck 🥺🥺🥺
I remember driving through Gary on my way to Minnesota recently. It honestly reminded me of the Walking Dead. The “city” looked and felt like leftovers from a recently deceased society, abandoned by most, with a few zombies and survivors wandering around the ruins aimlessly.
I lived in suburban Chicago area, born in Chicago and been through Gary on I-94 many times from the '70s to the '90s before moving to Georgia and now Florida. Even during that period the steel industry took a hit and things were going down hill seeing the city get even more run down in that 20 year period. After seeing the most recent videos, I was aghast to see how bad it has really gotten seeing many abandoned homes, businesses and schools. It suffered a similar fate as Detroit did after what the auto industry did to that city when it went practically bust.
When people leave, infrastructure misteriously falls appart. Peoples presence somehow holds things together, even without maintanance. For instance, in Pripyat (Ukraine Chernobyl Nuclear plant disaster abandoned city), block houses are beginning to collapse after 31 years of being abandoned. EXACTLY SAME TYPE AND AGE HOUSES ARE STANDING STRONG ACROSS WHOLE FORMER USSR WITHOUT ANY MAJOR MAINTENANCE! This is so misterious. It's like buildings feel that they got nothing to exist for and just die...
I’ve thought about this before, why does the house across the street that an elderly couple has lived in for 20 years and never maintained still standing when a house abandoned for 10 years collapses
@@walamo4796 While there may not be regular preventive maintenance, the elderly couple's house may receive enough in late or emergency sub-standard repair to just hang in there. Water is the worst enemy, once it somehow finds it way in, it will destroy. Also don't forget that empty houses are targets for vandals.
Kenneth Southard True, didn’t think about that. People come through smash out windows and doors, water starts getting in, floor and walls start collapsing. That makes a lot of sense
wonnieboy I see an ambulance in the video, so does that mean city services like fire/rescue still work? In parts of Detroit they don’t. Not enough people to justify them.
U know u look at all the dereliction an weeds covering the side walks but not so long ago kids used to play in those streets dads would be workin on or washin the family car an moms would be sittin in the front stoops. Where did they all go. My neighbourhood used to be pretty big round a thousand families now there’s round 150- 200 an most of them are retired age only time you see kids here now is Wk-ends when they come to visit grandparents. Our neighbourhood isn’t derelict it’s gettin took over by fukn university students most of the inner cities in Northen England are now. Universities are big business now all industries moved out students moved in the only jobs are university security or cleaners. Am 60yrs old now am wondering will I live to see my neighbourhood die or will it still be holding on. It’s fukn heart breaking you know
I bet during the 40s 50s and 60s that was an entirely different place . Same with Saginaw , Flint , Pontiac and Detroit. It's a sonofabitch when industry gets up and leaves town
If American companies werent so cheap those jobs wouldnt have to go abroad. Blame American companies for not choosing America. What happened to America First?
At least two KFC, Family Dollar, Save More food center, a few churches (where else would you go if no work and no money?), and lots and lots of "payday loans - cashing cheques" places for empty pockets and churches for empty souls.
Great video! I remember turning off i-90 on the way to Chicago and going right instead of left. When i went back towards Gary, the first thing i noticed were store signs and buildings as if i had gone back in time to 1960/70. This main drag - Broadway? was a safe area. Tried to visit MJ's home a couple blocks off and was nearly jacked. Raced back to the interstate. So sad to see.
The leafless trees and 50 shades of gray sky don't help. Even the grass looks like it requires some urgent life support. The city looks as if it has given up, and the raggedy ass roads just complete the picture of decay and neglect. It's sad to see any community which has lost its reason to exist.
At one time as late as the late 60's downtown Gary was still the place for most northwest Indiana residents to go shopping UNTIL the ELEMENT took over, and once that happens in EVERY city, village and town across the United States, you get destruction and BLIGHT. GEE I wonder WHY>
Glad you think so, I was born there, lived there and worked there and what I said IS the answer. HELL I had many of the ELEMENT tell that exact same thing, and I got along with the ELEMENT, had some great conversations with them, aas long as the conversation was educational and put downs, everyone understood what the PROBLEM was.
I know well that stretch of the Borman. The vibration of the camera from the dilapidated road. My brother was a cop there, worked the Glen Park district. He was lamenting the deterioration of Broadway 50 years ago.
DUDE, DUDE, DUDE.... WOW!!! I was able to drive along with you in Google Maps on your journey along Broadway (IN-53) in Indiana. WOW... what a great journey we had together. Whenever I wanted to check out a spot, I paused your video, looked around and then kept right on going with you... You need to create a way for your viewers to be able to follow along... all you have to do is help your viewers locate you on Google Maps and we can ride along with you and explore on our own.... This was SO, SO, SO cool....!!!
In the mid 1960's we could catch a bus for a dime and go Down Town to see a movie and visit friends. The big lighter building (On the left) after the Palace was a Sears or Montgomery Wards. There were a lot of high end stores too. I also remember people would BBQ along the streets with half barrels and sell their goodies.
I was there from August 1958 through December 1959 before moving down to the I.U. campus at Bloomington. Gary was a great (but steel-mill-dirty) city in those years. Not long after January 1960 Democrats took control, the steel mills began shutting down, and the city went to hell. They say it is coming back. It has a long way to come if it is coming back.
Steel industries have been closing down across Western countries since the '50s. Everything to do with competition with China and East Asia and nothing to do with Democrats, Republicans, Bush, Reagan or whoever. In fact Democrats have given more subsidies to the steel industry since Kennedy.
My mom n dad lived in Gary back in 67 where I was born at Methodist hospital. We didn't stay long n moved to south side of Chicago where my brother was as born at home.
Gloomy and eerie, just the way I like it; West Allis sates me enough, however. Wouldn't mind saying hello to the USS though. Lots of family heritage of mine down there.
i added you , i love this to watch , so i can see a bit of the us to from youtube, greetz from the borderarea between belgium and holland and france.im belgian but if i drive like 25 miles each in another direction im in france or the netherlands
As the youngsters say these days, *"Let's be KEEPING it REAL"!* What you're seeing in videos like this, started happening to those cities, *LONG BEFORE NAFTA BECAME a 'GLEAM' in some POLITICIAN'S EYE!*
@@WalterDWormack214 It was happening some before N.A.F.T.A was passed in 1993. The free trade agreement just made it much easier and accelerated the pace! Any ways Happy New Years eve in Amerika, if you are celebrating be careful and have fun!
Americans and their obstinate labor unions priced themselves out of the market by demanding too much from their employers. Do you blame them for going somewhere else.It is now cheaper for most manufacturing to be done in places like Red China because of the massive number of Chinese who will work cheap and not complain. It has nothing to do with trade agreements. You are being totally misled on the decline of American Manufacturing.
@@johngreen3543 You are right to a certain Point. Labor union leader misled the rank and file. The top union people were mostly looking after themselves after a while. Unions started out as a good at after the turn of century 1900s. But like all else too much good can be a bad thing! One thing for certain with China, India, Pakastan , and soon other countries rising as economic powerhouses and with population that far out pace ours, Amerika will NEVER be a economic no.1 again. America will be sceaming U.N.C.L.E.!!! A lot of people in high positions in this country are enemies of the very country they are serving!! Anyway Happy New Year!!
@@johngreen3543 Forgot to add American are way to divided amongst themselves to unite. Remember it is in the best intertest of those in power to keep the population " Divided, Poor, and Uneducated ". When you look out over the Amerikan landscape and observe what is going on in this ONCE great country of ours you can see they have been very very succesful!! Anyways I'm going to back on out of hear, eat some leftovers, watch a John Wayne western and enjoy the beginning of a New Year!!
Gary is over too many bad apples the police, the court system is ridiculous bogus the people in Gary don’t want better they don’t want a do better they are set in bad ways
I Was Born And Raised In Columbia South Carolina Richland County South Carolina My BirthPlace HomeTown Is Columbia Richland County South Carolina I Still Live In Columbia South Carolina I Grew Up In Columbia Richland County South Carolina
Chicago's future if things don't change...Fact Chicago is losing its population at the fastest rate of All the major cities in the U.S. As this happens, it's already outrageous overburdening tax rates will climb proportionately driving more and more people out...
Yeah but the people that whit really doing something it's the people no body like because they say that whit taking other people work but no body do nothing to make Gary better I fix a lot of this houses now it's people leaving on
