I’m always amazed by abandoned homes/blocks. At some point those homes were places where someone lived, made memories, spent holidays, and went when they knew they had no where else to go. Can’t help but think of who/why/when they were left that way.
They don’t stay that way for long in Gary. Someone usually comes along and Molotov cocktails them because the city won’t condemn them. They they really become eye sores because no one will tear them down.
@@xibit2081 Also, the crash of the steel mills and associated businesses brought this about too... Nobody wants to stay where there are no jobs or any hope for a well paying one...
Not true@ that's what happened when all the white people leave. Go check out the rural videos and you will see the same thing.people are seeking green pasture so they will go where the jobs at.
It's really sad to see the heart and soul torn out of communities like Gary, East St Louis and parts of Detroit for example. When manufacturing dies, so do the communities.
Thanks for posting. I’m from Gary. I was born in the Dorie Miller Projects. We later moved to a house on Poke St. owned by my grand daddy on my father’s side, but we had to move because the wiring in the house was messed up. I went to Fredrick Douglas Elementary School. My older siblings went to Roosevelt. We later moved to Delaney Projects. I remember Delaney the most. Gary was the murder capital of the 1990s. Til this day I still remember stray bullets flying though our windows, crackheads breaking into our home, Lying on the floor from Shoot outs. Being shot at,people selling drugs. I was only 6 years old when we finally moved to Minnesota . Glad I made it out. But I’ll never forget were I came from.🙏🏾
victoria I went to tollisten an stay on Jefferson down the street from Roosevelt high in the 90s I might come back an help rebuild it my grandfather ran Gary before I was born he ran numbers so one of my goals is to come back an fix this place
Tony Jackson I’ve thought about fixing it up too. I still have family on my mom and dad side that lives there. My oldest brother works at the casino. It’s so much work to be done. Are you related to the famous Jackson’s?
@Austin T. You're a damn lie, I live here not too far from where this video started recording FYI they have filmed a few movies here and no one stole any equipment we were excited and happy they filmed here, we have plenty of decent folks here and they work hard so you can stay in your lane you don't live here and what's going on in Gary has nothing to do with you and it damn sure don't effect you. Have a nice day .
When properly armed not an issue. night vision + Thermal sensor fused monocular 15k, assault rifle 50k, body armor 3k, hand gun 1k. armored car with puncture proof tires 200k
There will be a point in time when people will see all those empty plots as an opportunity to have larger grounds around their houses. Creative redevelopement/renaturation of the lakeside is key, imo.
Breaks my heart having grown up in East Gary to see how Gary looks. I remember as a kid going to Gary with my mom shopping at all the department stores. Gary was a beautiful city when the US Steel was going. Time moves on they say, still doesn't make it easier to accept 😔
US Steel Gary Works didn't close. The Steel Mill in Gary is still open, operating and producing more steel then ever before. The issue is due to the automation of the steel making process, US Steel doesn't require as many workers to make steel. US Steel Gary Works used to employ 30 thousand people, but now there's only about 9 thousand workers at the Mill in Gary.
It’s actually alright. Had to bug bomb my house like it was WW2 but waking up every morning to the sounds of birds and wildlife and seeing nature outside was oddly blissful, was so quiet. everyone minds they business. But in winter it’s depressing yeah, everything is gone. no sounds, no people and no hope.
The corporate culture is such that a very few become rich by millions and others who slog suffer. Have a look at how Ken Miles was robbed of Le Mans victory just due to dirty corporate politics.
yes but local gov's have to find a way to attract NEW businesses and technology. Unfortunately many gov officials have no clue how to do that or simply don't want to because they are stuck in their ways.
I couldn't disagree more. The people who make comments such as yours perpetuate this notion that the government is responsible for EVERY foul thing that happens to us (and, yes I'm black) as a community. A lot of people of color sit at home and twiddle their thumbs all day until the rest of the world get off of their 8-12 hour shifts . And; furthermore, I do not live like this. The majority of the people I do know that live similarly to this, chose not to get an education or even go to work. Yet, they take every dime they have and spend it on dressing well (in clothing they can't afford, might I add) and driving cars like superstars and living like "super bums". My folks didn't have a whole lot, but they taught me to go to work, spend wisely, pay my bills, and take pride in my home! And, by the way... They led by example!
Sao Salazar mega hat morons keep voting people like reagen Busch and trump give corporations more power to do what they want send jobs to countries where they can pay low wages and the working class gets screwed.
US is not the only country suffering by this. It is one of the main global issues. Stuff is manufactured in the China, Taiwan etc. and other countries just assemble some of the parts or machine them. For this semi-production you don't need big companies with many ppl like it used to be 30 years ago. It is still possible to change that in smaller countries like in the Czech Republic where I live but I do not see any easy way how to get the US economy independent on the China again... I can't even imagine how to start in the current situation.
Its hard to see how this would be possible as a lot of know how is gone plus automation is taking over all means of production . As I see it, Gary has only the option to turn everything into a huge museum/entertaining park/national park and earn money on tourism.
My thoughts exactly! I wanted to buy up entire blocks, fix up all the houses, all on solar and wind with a food forest for all residents. Communities that don't rely on corporate america's bottom feeder jobs! I wonder if Gary could just decriminalize cannabis and grow it for a cash crop?
Its a great oppertunity. There are many home steaders and farms outside of Gary, but most dont want ti come close to Gary. People in that town would even steal your food.
I first went to Chicago and Hammond and Gary 43 years ago and the last time I was there was 15 years ago when I retired from driving. The first time I was there it was thriving with families hanging out in their yard. The last time it had become fairly rough but nothing as bad with total abandonment as this. Sad
Thank you for taking the time to share this video. WHY, WHY, WHY??? I don't understand why the Mayor/City aren't tearing down these abandon buildings. Not at all safe! So sad and it has to be depressing for the few people who do live there. Give the people some hope, tear the buildings down.
Red Lawton nah but Chicago hoods are just hell like damn near worse than Iraq till this day 500-808 murders and 2000-4000+ people shot from little bitty hoods Chicago as a city ain’t dangerous like bmore and shit but the hoods are the worst in the US that’s where the name chiraq come in
You're the best channel doing this kinda thing. You deserve more subscribers than you have. No talk, no bs, no stats or anything. What we see tells the story no words can.
I'm always amazed by how close to each other many of the houses are. The USA is vast and yet houses are built so close you can shake hands with your neighbour just by opening your windows.
That and the fact that theyre all built from thin wood.....living a discreet and healthy sexual life seems out of the question, for one, as is a party or private phonecall....its like one big commune, kinda creepy.
Houses add way more close in Europe but not all of the US is like this in states like California, Nevada, Arizona, Oregon and other western states the houses are more unique and most of them will always have a garage you should look at LA hoods, Stockton, and more
Alot of cities are like this...but in Gary there was a time when people moved here from all over the world...it was hard to find homes to live...all the empty lots you see used to be houses there...
Jesus Christ man, we're losin' middle America. Too many rich people, way too many poor people. And the middle class is fightin' a losin' battle just to maintain. How can we fix it? God help us.
Charlie what do you do with THOSE comments? you know like... the ones who come to your page just to voice their messed up views? you block em? just wondering. I am starting to see why too much of a particular thing and not sure what I should do. How have you handled them?
Hey man, thanks for what you do. I know of no one else showing how “the other half live”. Your videos are truly eye-opening. Keep up the good work. What you’re doing is important.
Julio Serrano 😂 it’s actually not that bad. I lived in Gary like this for 7 years and always was working the next towns over so I would always say it’s where I lived but it’s not like I’d hang around outside
I'm not Laura Kightlinger seems like the 70s and 80s was when the United States visibly stopped giving a shit about its own major cities. How does a place like Detroit go from the richest city in America in the 50s/early 60s to a piss broke war zone by the 70s and 80s? And let’s not forget the FBI dropping crates of automatic weapons in black communities like South Central LA, Chicago, etc which has been proven...they were also responsible for the crack epidemic.
Me encanta su canal. Puedo decir que he conocido un poquito de ese Estados Unidos profundo del que casi no se habla en medios convencionales. Muchas gracias 🙂
xGLOxSAVAGE _ It definitely ain’t. Not saying it ain’t bad because it is but I had a job where I had to go door to door in different Gary hoods day and night and tell them to get out and vote. I’m from Chicago so I guess that’s why I didn’t feel the same type of energy or vibe.
I dont think itll be that dangerous tbh, its just desserted and run down but aint nobody in most those areaa to make it dangerous. There is ZERO activity out
Luis Camacho he was born there! House still remains! Can't be bought! I believe it belongs to the Jackson family today! It's become a tourist attraction! Very small house!
You say “opted”. Moving is not really an option for people who are already dirt poor, especially if they have to support children or sick/elderly people
You sound like you’ve never had to worry about money. Not everyone can just move when they want. People live paycheck to paycheck with no savings. I know, I’ve been in these situations and still am sort of in that state right now.
when i was a little kid i remember Gary Indiana was just beginning to decline . but the houses still were so pretty and at Christmas time wow really something to see . i was born here , raised in Hammond mostly , but ive seen the town of Gary decay , when the jobs left the people tried to hold on but couldn't do it . now it is this depressing place , imagine having to live here! who gives a damn about the Jacksons they never done nothing for this town
@@trebuh Your idea has been tried many times, and it hasn't turned out that well. I know getting a job is a pain in the ass, but I can assure you it's better for your health in the long run.
DARIN D’ANGELO this is what happens when communities thrive off of manufacturing for years, then all of a sudden, companies move to the south, Mexico or over seas. Your options then are to move with the company if that option is available, take the severance and find a new job or stay and figure it out. This is what happened to Detroit, East St. Louis, Cleveland and many other north east cities...
My grandfather grew up here in the 50s. He always described it as being a really lively city. So sad to see it like this now. It's hard to believe that this is the same Gary as the one in his stories.
I was raised in Chicago. But I remember Gary back in the 80s, and 90s. 💛💛😍I walked these streets as a walking vendor. Selling inflatable toys for years. Nobody ever bothered me. There were a lot a good people here. Very supportive!👏🏾🤝🏽💯💛 It wasn't in it's full glory days. But the streets were full of life & kids playing. That looks like Delaney Housing Projects. One of my favorite areas. Such a shame, what it's come to.🤦🏾♀️😔😢A ghost town for sure.😱
I live here! I actually moved back here -- and I was glad to get back. Home is home. I just saved this video for when I get homesick when I move again in a few years ;)
you bet ya ass , its a great place ! 5 bux you get 450 pound fat fanny to bend over and pump that skin tagged bloody sores rump roast behind one of them buildins
This video makes me want to cry!! I am deeply disappointed in our government, for not helping!! 😭.. mean while they help other countries!! Thank you for making this video!!
@@aholegardener6191 yeah, people pay taxes....government does not pay taxes. And street repairs are made through local governments. And streets are public property Why should I pay for somebody else's private property???
Born and raised my parents loved Gary I’m the 60 and 70 really was nice especially downtown nice jobs and homes. Still some wonderful people there it will always be home though 🙏
I used to catch the Greyhound bus from Michigan to Gary to visit cousins during the summer. They lived on Hayes Street. Those were fun times. Many people on the street us kids playing out front, listening to Jackson Five music (they were long gone.) Fond memories.
Next time you are in Gary, check out the IU Northwest campus on 35th & Broadway - nicest part of the actual city of Gary aside from Marquette Park/Miller Beach
As a kid my dad would take me to Michigan, we lived in Chicago and he would take the indiana toll way and we would go by Gary, it was in decay back in the late 60s , I can still remember looking at the dilapidated houses and feeling so sad.
I bet if he had a really high HD camera and you were looking at the windows on a large monitor or TV, You would see a lot of people looking. Just my guess. I feel like the energy and tone shifts between night and day on a heavy level.
Insane lane Gaming How so? I’m from Vegas - there’s nothing like that here as far as abandoned stuff but I feel you on daytime feeling different. Tourists are always disappointed if the first time they see the Las Vegas Strip is during the day, it’s just gross during the day lmao
Love your content Charlie! I grew up in North Bay Area California during the Crack epidemic. Same people. Made me stronger and gave me hope to get out. I still am a hustler from the streets at heart. But no matter how dark it was there was always a fleck of humanity when shit went down. I only hope that our government will invest more into these communities and bring more ecucation opportunities and bring back civic responsibility.
Gary has changed so much I used to visit my grandmother on 2600 Jefferson Street Gary Indiana when I was a small kid Gary was a vibrant vibrant City at that time the steel mill was open and the beverage company I think was open big facilities of work and it has changed a lot it's deserted sad to see I love to Gary when I was young girl with Grandma's house LOL thank you for the video of Gary Indiana 🌹
My mom grew up there, the talk back in the 60's was bad enough about it's decline. Off to watch a delightful musical number about Gary from The Music Man.
It’s always gloomy & it’s so many abandoned houses/businesses. It’s truly an eye sore. A lot of out-of-towners are moving in escalating the violence. Streets are raggedy & full of pot holes. Have to work outside of city limits if you aren’t a steel mill worker or a casino worker. School systems are trash. On a positive note, there are a LOT of great people/families in Gary. The food is awesome. They are slowly building back up the city.
Most of America looks like this. Thank the two party system. The corporate bought government. The military industrial complex. The police state. And last but not least...the drug war.

Makes me so sad. My home town is Hammond right next door. I love all the old architecture of these old cities.😀 I wish things were different but unfortunately that’s not the case. Too many things going against these one beautiful cities. In my dream world they would all be refurbished.
