I saw the movie "Donny Darko" early in my teaching career. This song captivated me in a very powerful way. I vowed never to be 'that' teacher... "now sit and listen" has never been uttered by my lips; I can look back on my career now that it is nearing its end and be satisfied that every student I have ever taught has been seen, valued, engaged, and yes... loved; (this was high school and community college now). Every teacher should see this movie. It should be required watching.

"greetings from the side" and "trading snakeoil for wolftickets" are two of my absolute favorite albums of all time, i cannot tell you how many nights "barstool" has kept me and so many ever-changing groups of friends company while we drank too much and got too emotional, getting real loud every time the "stay the in the bar" line rolled around for the chorus, or how many times i have sat and cried listening to "falling awake". i love your version of "mad world", i think most people would agree that they enjoy it more than the tears for fears version, if they have ever even heard the original, but i really feel like your original stuff is so much better than the TfF cover. every time i listen to those songs, i am reminded how perfect they are, every lyric and every note, each song is just so easy to listen to, so well-rounded. anybody that reads this comment, i urge you to listen to "greetings from the side", "trading snakeoil for wolftickets" and mr jules' self-titled album. you will find so much more to love than just the familiar song from donnie darko, you will find a musician who really understands life and knows how to relate his experience to his listener.

Happy 20 freaking years!!! I remember little old me sitting in front of the computer and hearing this song for the Gears of War game trailer, the song fit so well for the atmosphere of that game and even though I didn't look up the song it stuck with me for YEARS until one day I found the music video. This takes me back, not only does the vocals and instrumental fit together perfectly, but it really gets me quite nostalgic and gets me in my feels and makes me reflect on the world around me. I have listened to this enough times now to conclude this is in my opinion even better than Gary’s original version. It faithfully mirrors the 2003 recoding but with clear, meaningful and poignant differences and inflections. I love it. This is timeless, Gary. Thank you so much.

I was laying in bed one night when this song came on in a commercial. I remember tracking it down and learning every single word. (also turned me onto Tears for Fears) I would sing it every night, all the time, so often that I got the exact timing of Gary's breathing down. Feels weird to say I used to sing along with you to such a sad song when I was so young, but I appreciate that you covered it, really made it your own, and helped it spread so that people like myself could find it one random night on TV. I'm sure there were other people like me, kids at the time who were just up late and caught the song and stuck with it. 20 years and 5 months later, still here to hear you sing it, still signing along before bed.

I love that you saw this song in a different way. The original is trying to be an upbeat pop song and it doesnt do justice to the exquisite poetic sadness of the lyrics. It feels like your version set the lyrics and melody of the song to be appreciated properly. So heartbreakingly beautiful

Ever since I was little and saw that Gears of War trailer, I've always loved this song. Hell I remember the song far better than the game itself, and that's crazy because the game was really good, but this song just really stuck with me. Probably has something to do with me ending up with certain detrimental mental issues and disabilities later on, this song I guess always felt like a great way to summarize my mind and emotions. This song gives me, to this day, a strange feeling that someone else knows how I feel behind my façade. Also in a way helps me keep going. I also used to know how to play the piano to enough of a degree to replicate this song. Thank you for making this song. Despite my comment sounding depressing, this song's helped me at times, and I'll never forget it.
For myself as well. Long story, but drug addiction and failure, sobriety and success. I listen to this daily, almost deaf, bluetoothing through my hearing aids doing chores around my beautiful, rural Redwood covered Log Cabin mountain home humbled by the second chance i was given.
