First time I ever heard this song was the Gears 1 trailer. Ever since, it's always had a little place in my head and heart. I think the extra vibrato in your voice helps deliver that "intentional imperfection" and somber attitude even better than the original. Congrats on 20 years, Mr. Jules, and here's to many more!
I started listening to it as a teenager when heavy depressions and anxiety first hit me. Ten years later It got worse again. But the song does not make me feel sadder it gives me the feeling of not being alone and feeling understood. I really enjoy your version actually more than the original, because I think the lyrics are more in the focus.
I agree this song is a paradox it makes me feel upset yet it gives me hope always has done since i was a child, this version holds a special place in my heart.
It is depression put to words and music. In happy times it reminds us to hold on to those moments. When the days are dark it reminds us that we aren't alone.

There's something extra special about your rendition of this song, Gary. The release of Donnie Darko was overshadowed by 9/11, and yet became a cult classic, and while the original Tear's version is incredible and a reflection of the times, your version cut time with a definitive divide of a new reality and everything that came after that day.
I remember seeing Tears for Fears do this live several times in the 80s, thinking “ what a great song”! Years later hearing this version gave me chills. Thanks for doing considerable justice to the original!

Every time, when i her this song, i remember the 9 11 incident, idk why, maybe because this somg was in so much videos of 9 11, or maybe because its just so connecting to what happened... R.I.P ti all the souls who died on the 9 11, such a tragic day😔

I've always wondered what that effect is when he sings the "Mad World" line. It's such an ethereal sound. This song would be naked without that part. After all these years, I still have to stop and listen every time that I hear this song.
That's a soundpad - an electronic effect that is basically a sound canvas for background "intensity" as you described it. The Soundtrack uses soundpads in a great and effective way

I remember this song from the Gears of War video game trailer. Me and my cousin loved it and listened to it all the time. We grew apart as adults and he dropped dead in New Orleans last year at 36 y/o. Such a beautiful song, thank you for sharing it with us.
The Time the Movie came out - flopped - and then became an overnight cult success with this Song reaching Nr. 1 in several countries was a very special time in the lives of young teenagers back then. I'm glad to have lived through it and enjoy the Soundtrack throughly to this day!

Gary, I'm sitting in the Calgary, Alberta airport food court with tears streaming down my cheeks as I recall listening to your version of this song 11 years ago with my son, who was 10 at the time. His mom and I divorced shortly afterwards and I was immediately cut off from him. Maybe one day he and I will be father and son again. @kisms8590 In July 2013, I sought help from my company with alcohol use disorder. My ex had issues with alcohol as well but didn't want to stop. Her solution was to file for divorce and alienate my son against me. I have over 10 years of sobriety now, and she has a Go Fund Me set up to help her with her liver transplant. I assume she never stopped drinking. My sobriety was a threat to her drinking, so I became the bad guy. Maybe one day my son will want contact with me. For now, he lives with his mom far from me, and never responds to my messages.
