Gary Longstaff owns a rather bonkers 14 Trojans and Heinkels. Here I caught up with him on the Heinkel & Trojan Club stand (heinkel-trojan-club.co.uk) at the 2021 NEC classic car show, where he told me all about these oddball microcars.
Imagine if you can, an American Football game between the team from U.S.C. (University of Southern California) and U.C.L.A. (University of California as Los Angeles, Two bitter crosstown rivals. Every player with U.S.C. the TROJAN, dressed in full football with all equipment being worn, being the driver and only occupant in a immaculately restored Trojan Dark red and deep 'gold' two-town paint scheme coming down the tunnel as the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. After that 'parade' All the players on the U.C.L.A. team are the only ones driving down the tunnel and onto the playing field in a Yugo painted in a brown colored paint scheme and having big bear paws made of stuffed bear pieces attached to each hood. U.C.L.A. mascot is a Bruin or brown bear. The Yugos are all unrestored and barely driveabile, looking almost totally wrecked with as much rust as possible showing through. Large holes in the body panels can be viewed. After all the cars are on the running track and not on the actual playing field, the Trojan football players exit their Heinkel Trojan 200 single door vehicles and grab a large sledge hammer from a table near where the midfield area just off the playing field it. The Trojan players all take their Sledgehammers to the Yugos after the Bruin players exit their cars. This begins a huge view of ultimate destruction of the Yugos which would not take much of a time period. The U.S.C. teammembers will claim a first victory over the U.C.L.A. players who are seen huddled together close to the field end of the tunnel area. A large sign held up by Trojan cheer members states "Trojans Beat Bruins, without any PAWS".
