Thanks for reacting to more Gary Moore. The one thing about both Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher is they felt every single note they played. Such emotion in their work
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoyed this as much as I do. He was a truly a master. What a great expression of musical dynamics on electric guitar. The vocal, crying quality of the guitar he is able to create so masterfully through his wide string bends and expressive control of vibrato. A lot of people don't realize what a small Thin line it is between musical beauty and just out of control noise and feedback when you have a Marshall stack amplifier cranked to 11. it's a raging beast you have to keep under control and then use to your advantage to generate long liquid sustaining notes allowing it to feedback only when and where and how you want it to. Using the volume knob to seamlessly switch from bright and clean to overdrive and distorted. The real true appreciation is in the subtle nuances. Just amazing every time, never gets old. RIP Gary.
I'm a huge Roy Buchanan fan and The Messiah was one of his personal anthems. Some of the attributes you most admire about Gary's amazing cover are the very things that set Roy apart. The emotion behind each note, the speed, the tone were there and the innovation was unique. The first thing to known about Roy is that he used no effect pedals - just start there. Also, nobody did anything like this before Roy. I feel like Gary is the more modern version of Roy. RoysBluz, I'm Evil, Hey Joe (yes, his cover is awesome also) - checkout his early stuff and trust me if you like incredible, original guitar work.
Any kids out there want inspiration to played guitar this is the guy to study, my hero and he gave me the inspiration to learn, devastated when he died. You should watch the whole concert it is amazing.
Yes, THIS here isn’t the most genuine Gary, he poured his heart out in this performance. And meet “Greeny”, a very very special guitar with an unique sound, a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard that he got from Peter Greene when he was about 15 or 16. A beautiful guitar which is currently in the proud hands of Kirk Hammett from Metallica! But one more thing about this song, it is indeed an original from Roy Buchanan and is on his album he released in 1971 if I’m not mistaken. There is actually also a live version from him dated 1976, you can check that out as well and compare them to see how Gary made it his song. Otherwise I mentioned before “Parisienne Walkways” from Montreaux as well, but 2010, one of his last performances and “Separate Ways” from 1992 at the Town & Country Club in London
I am loving your appreciation and insight into his playing. You just take it and experience it, and call it just like it is. I loved how you can feel the build up and anticipation, and the resolution, but also recognize the uniqueness to it. He is amazing, and if you want to do one of his songs with lyrics, we can always give recommendations like “I love you more thank you’ll ever know” or “Still got the blues for you”. He can sing so passionately and great as well. You should check out Stevie Ray Vaughn and Joe Bonamassa as well. Oh, your two reactions to Gary Moore songs is what got this new subscriber.
You mention the part that made you think it was about to transition to heavier rock or metal. This was the focus of Gary's early career through the 70s and 80s. You should check out this side of his playing as well. As I believe you are already aware, Gary had a long friendship with fellow Irishman Phil Lynott. Gary had periods as a member of Thin Lizzy, but never a long term member due to turbulence in the band, which was both sometimes the cause for Gary being in the band and also the reason for eventual departure. It's unfortunate that the pair did not spend more of their careers making music together, as when they did the result was often stellar (see Parisienne Walkways). The joint compositions commonly reflected their Irish heritage and often turbulent, violent upbringing, which is reflected both lyrically and in the sound of the music: Black Rose, Blood of Emeralds, Out in the Fields, Over the Hills and Far Away, Military Man, Johnny Boy, After The War, Wishing Well and Gary's cover of the Yardbirds 'Shapes of Things' lyrically fits into this theme and vein as well, minus the Celtic/Irish sound. You'll get a variety of different suggestions, including some of those above, all worthy, but here are 2 of my favorites. Victims of the Future and Murder In The Skies. Victims, I believe, is a reflection of growing up with fear and trepidation about what the future might hold, both from his youth in a wartorn Ireland and the global cold war threat and fear of nuclear war. Murder was written about Korean Air Lines Flight 007 Shot down by the Soviet Air Forces after navigation error by KAL pilots 1 September 1983 after being mistaken for a US spy plane. All 269 occupants killed. I always loved how the aggressive sound of the music reflected both the anger and outrage in Gary's voice as well as just the violent nature of the event itself. The highlight for me though is how Gary is able to use the guitar to replicate the sound of the aircraft plunging and hurtling at increasing speed toward its imminent demise. Gary was such an attacking, aggressive guitarist during this period and this song reflects that as well as any to me! That guitar he is playing here is the infamous "Greeny" Les Paul he got from Peter Greene from Fleetwood Mac...Kirk Hammet from Metallica has it now... It sold for a fortune...
Check out Steve Ray Vaughan playing Texas Flood, live from El Mocambo. If you want blues. Comfortably Numb live Pulse show. There you have also one of 4 guitarist ever lived
1959 Les Paul guitar, worth about $400k without provenance. Owned by Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac before him so probably a million plus. Vintage Marshall amps turned well up. And of course Gary Moore. This is what you get.
It's pronounced "bu-CAN-non," not "bu-CHAN-nan. You should try listening to some of his work, because Roy was one of the most criminally underrated guitarists of all time. He could literally make his Telecaster talk, without using any effects pedals at all. Roy Buchanan was an inspiration to a great many guitarists around the world, including Gary Moore.
Crazy how dumbed down youngins are nowadays…it’s because the commie clowns in power design it that way…keep the, dumb and easily manipulated and brainwashed….then you got the future…sad
We all have to remember that this is Roy Buchanan's composition and Gary's version is an interpretation. Gary plays it well but it will never be played better than Roy.
