I was 18 sitting in row W, can't recall my seat number but as Gary turned on the headlights 🚥 of his Numan Mobile 🏎️ 👁️👁️ and shone the lights on us 🚦I got quite excited 😊😱🥳 I met Gary several times along with his band and Gemma who was lovely.
Lucky! They both sound so genuine & a great pair. Saw them in SF a few yrs ago. Whadda show !! Such energy at ( I think, then )63 !!! Can't beat him almost stepping on your fingers with his boot at the stage. Except meeting them. That's so cool. Great post....- bb
I was 17 in 1980 and living in the future thanks to him, Pete Shelley's Homosapian album and Kraftwerk's Computerwelt (yes, the German import). Here we are now. As Yogi Berra once said, "The future ain't what it used to be."
I’m sitting here smiling thinking how interesting it is that Gary was so ahead of the curve back in 1980. It’s good to know he’s still crushing it even today. Well done mate.
NO comparison. TR was lucky to find a Numan album , since he only had thrash metal in his head up til then. Do not like him at all . My opinion only . - bb
It's 2am on a Tuesday, had no idea who Gary Numan was until 15 minutes ago. I've only heard Marilyn Manson's version, had no idea it was a cover. Seeing n hearing Numan for the first time just now..there's absolutely something brilliant about him/this song. Not sure how long it takes to remaster 40 year old recordings but...worth it! 👍🏻✊🏻 Thank you who ever you are lol
This is footage from a movie called "Urgh! A Music War" that was released in 1981. It's essentially 2 hours of artists on stage doing 1 song, and they're all pretty much the who's-who of dawn-of-the 80s new wave- everyone from The Police, The Go-Gos', Devo and Joan Jett to X, Dead Kennedys and The Cramps. Well worth checking out.
Pleasure principle , great album I bought it on an album as a kid just for the one song “cars” it was my favorite album of the summer. I was probably 10 years old and had never heard of Tubeway Army but it opened doors musically for me. Joy Division is also not too bad, also from same era.
If all the tracks from this show at Hammersmith still exist, wouldn't it be wonderful if they could all be cleaned up, remastered as above, and made into a DVD of this historic gig?
Reportedly there are at least THREE professionally recorded tracks from each of the artists on _Urgh! A Music War_ . To the best of my knowledge, only The Cramps have seen all their tracks released: Tear It Up (which was in the film), Human Fly, and Teenage Werewolf.
I had a chuckle watching him zoom around the stage evoking Davros, the creator of the Daleks. I saw him do an acoustic version of this on a couch with his daughter. She was singing the instrumental counterpoint. You could see his happiness that she was singing with him, and his pride in her. He seemed like a rather lonely, melancholy bloke in his younger years. Good to know he has had a happy life with a family to love. He still has the power and timbre in his voice, too. Rock on. Rock on.
@@GHOST-mi4jh I attended this tour aged 11 in 1980, I can’t actually remember that much about it tbh, but do more so TTP in 1979 which my first live concert absolutely memorising , it would be the first place I’d revisit if they ever build a time machine ! 🔺😊💖
@@andreweccles8130 sweet, thank you for replying, we're hopefully going to see him in Newcastle/ may/22.Im trying to get my chap to come with me, and that's hard, I'm glad I've found a numan friend, lol have a happy hall🎃WEEN.
So would I! If all the tracks from this show at Hammersmith still exist, wouldn't it be wonderful if they could all be cleaned up, remastered as above, and edited into a DVD of this historic gig?
This and only two others were recorded though they are the same versions heard on LO80. One is Remind Me To Smile, that video should be here. Forget the other somg.
Gary's touring band was phenomenal. His tours from 1979 and 1980 drained him financially, I've only seen sets to equal this from bands like Yes and ELP. He was doing this in much smaller forums. When I saw him in 1980 in San Francisco, his first night was cancelled, we didn't know until we got there. Bummed my 11th row center seat turned into the nosebleeds. But just look at this!
Brilliant this! And still a bit of a rarity in 1980 to use a wireless mic 🎤. They were around for years but not often seen. A few years later it became a common thing. This song in this live version with this stageset sums up exactly what was so great about Gary Numan in those early years of his career.
Gary&fam are being recognized now , Gary as the THE PIONEER;his family, now, as his mainline support. We love what you do, Gary,& love that ( family) you are his bedrock. - as the fans, we all benefit. Keep it up, Gary+Gemma&family! - bb
So glad they had the foresight back in 1980 to shoot this on film instead of the video of the day, it looks and sounds amazing. Thanks for the remaster!
It was from _Urgh! A Music War_ which was produced by Miles Copeland (brother of Stewart Copeland, drummer for The Police). There were something like two dozen or more punk and new wave bands that were filmed professional for it, including Gary Number, The Police, The Cramps, DEVO, Dead Kennedys, Toyah Wilcox (who is now married to King Crimson founder Robert Fripp), The Surf Punks, The Alley Cats, OMD, Wall of Voodoo, Echo and the Bunnymen, Klaus Nomi, and a bunch of others.
Unfortunately not, there were cameras there but apparently they only switched them on for 3 songs, God knows why, but it’s a crying shame it would have sold by the millions, this is the best quality sound and vision I’ve seen.
I believe this performance was filmed for “Uurgh its a Music War” right? Which is an awesome film in itself. This is the song that made me a Gary Numan fan.
Revolutionary, way ahead of his time, this is Gary Numan... Too cool 🙇🏻❤ Revolucionário, muito a frente do seu tempo esse é Gary Numan... Foda demais 🙇🏻❤
He was a huge influence on many I know, including me. His music has influence us musicians, and yet he is considered a one hit wonder according to MTV and VH1. 🤦🏻♂️
There was also a live version of this song on RU-vid that had a similar intro to this one. That intro was ON POINT. It's gone now, can't find it anywhere. I feel sad, it all feels like a dream now.
Can't remember if this was Wembley or Hammersmith Odeon, but went to see him twice, when I was a Kid. This show blew me away. Unbelievable quality of this upload particularly the sound. Happy (ier) times
Down in the parkとオーワカレヨ♪のWreckageすきです
