The Cymatic 24 track uPlayers are great for the cost, in theory he could chain them to get 48 backing tracks, you can have 4 in total 96 tracks that's insane! Don;t forget before this there would have been backing on DAT in the 90s. These are much more reliable though. Also MainStage has only replaced things like sampler workstations where you'd sample (in the old days of the 90s and late 80s) the original sounds program in your splits and layers for each song, so all MainStage does is allow you to be more flexible and add software synths into the mix. A lot of bands only use software synths live now with controller keyboards. It's less time to prepare for live shows (less cost to have the band together or a programmer and less cost to hire synths or buy them for a tour to get kicked about).
@Fruitbat-tb3lg

Great stuff. I’ve always been into synths since a kid (52 now). Great to see how it’s done now. I used to have racks of synths too, but now make all my musical dabblings on an iPad. Yeah I can still appreciate the hardware, but at the end of the day Numan is great in concert because you guys put on a great show! I’m all for the new more reliable set up - after all, who wants old tech dying on stage! I’ve never come away from a Numan gig thinking ‘O boy that would sound better with old analog synths’. While I love the old songs too, I would love to see a tour with just the best of the modern era music played (everything after Machine and Soul). I know his gigs are mostly the new stuff with some old favs thrown in that have been brought up to date, but I did miss a few of the later album tours and would love to hear some of them revisited in a kind of ‘best of new Numan’ kind of thing.

I personally love the ‘behind the scenes’ stuff you guys do, as it helps some of us feel closer to the music.

Is that the Radial KL-8 mixer you are using? I love that it has dual USB inputs for switching between Macs if necessary. Have you come across any alternate mixer systems that compare (with 4 or more stereo inputs)? Thanks for any/all advice. Greatly appreciated in advance.

wow what a fascinating video, just out of interest how come you sample the old keyboard sounds and not use VSTs and save the settings and presets on the Mac. Isn't it too restrictive live these days just to have the a single sample to play with? But I suppose on the otherside as you said you are there to play rather than go off and creating something sounding difference. :)
@swayallstars
@swayallstars 4 месяца назад
Hi Rich, Glad you enjoyed the video. I really must do another one. We sampled the old sounds when Gary was selling all his old gear when he moved to America. It seemed like the right thing to do (to have those actual authentic sounds from Numan's personal keyboards). With a bit of tinkering I got them sounding and reacting great. Then a very talented programmer called Matt Jessup gave us a library of Pleasure Principle patches that he'd made for the Access Virus. With those and a few other VSTs I tend to mix them all together to create sounds big enough to work with the current arrangements of the songs. It will interesting to see how we end up doing the upcoming PP tour - wish me luck!

Now that your gear is all set up, can you go over the process of going from newly released album to preparing the live keyboard parts (including the Mainstage voicing and working out your keyboard ballet)? How much do you get from Gary and Ade, how much do you have to work out on your own, etc? Maybe that'd be a topic for another video.
@littlefinger3019
@littlefinger3019 3 года назад
That's actually a really cool idea. The Numan rig is actually back in bits (some in the lock-up and some here) again now but when I get it all back together for whatever shows we have next I'll try and do this. Thanks for suggesting it. Just briefly now though, Ade sent me a folder of the patches that they used on the album and I work it out from there. That's the basic principle but there was a lot of of to-ing and fro-ing and there's a lot of patch editing and modifying ahead once we get gigging.

Hi Frank, there are quite a few. Off the top of my head - Digital Native, Pulse Pad, Metal/Hammer/Pulse Bass? (I can’t remember), Staccato Heaven (although I can’t imagine why we saved it and what we might use it on). A few patches names have been changed over the years to the name of the song (and edited by various people) so I don’t know what they originally were (AFE, Down In The Park, ME, etc.). I tend to use them WITH other things from elsewhere to make up the sound that I want.

No words for musicians nowadays that can no longer play music if the communcation to those stupid laptops of an even more stupid company are not working. Shame to make you depending to such an unnecessary equipment. OMG. Think, there were days when keyboards and synthesizers work just without it!
@littlefinger3019
@littlefinger3019 3 года назад
It all depends what type of music you're creating. I do gigs with just a piano, I do gigs with just keyboards, but for a state of the art Electronica gig I use all the technology I can to recreate the original recording (without just playing the original recording). Laptops are just another instrument that I use to help me. I like to play as much as is humanly possible "manually" but laptops are a great "help". Unfortunately too many people use them instead of actual musical playing ability and I would hate to be confused with them.
@valerianteritron4424
@valerianteritron4424 3 года назад
@@littlefinger3019 Sorry being so negative about that. I absolutely can understand, that those laptops are just making the life of a musician a little easier. But on the other hand, if you think it full through, you would no longer need real keyboards and real synthesizers. You would only need MIDI keyboards and those laptops in the end. Because everything is emulated or sampled by software. Additionally it is very stupid, that most of the musicians rely on one brand and of OS for those laptops and software. If you are doing that, you are bound to it, what ever comes. I know a lot of people complaining about Apple because of its constantly OS updates and release, which directly causing the need to update this and that software application too. Otherwise it will not working because of some kind of incompatibility which Apples creates on purpose. So a big time people spending on just mainaining Apple OS and software. And that not every 3 years (which would be ok) but much more frequent. Apple could shut down whole music business, just because all rely on them. The most answer of musicians is, that the other musician uses this, so I do. Another answer is, that there is more software on Apple OS available. That might be true, but only because they are only looking there. There is also a lot availble for Windows, and more would be continously developed if more demand would be there.
