As much as Gary was channeling his influences like Kraftwerk, Bowie, John Foxx and Ultravox he was also accidentally inventing industrial Metal at the same time.

This song sold me on buying the album. When Cars made a splash around 1980 in Canada, I bought the 45 and absolutely cherished it -- and Metal was its B side.

Great b side!! Better than any of the actual "b sides" 😅

What set Numan apart was 1) he could swing in these synths songs, as Justin noted, 2) he paid remarkable attention to the timber of his sounds, and 3) he used rel instruments behind the very synthetic keys. The result was a unique sound that still had soul.

In some ways GN was pulling from German bands like Kraftwerk, but he pushed their thing into a darker, dystopian sci-fi realm that foretold much of the 80's techno/dance scene.

Some crazy great bleak lyrics in this one. Example: " Picture this. If I could make the change, I'd like to pull the wires from the wall. Did you?" One of my favourites. Thanks for the reaction.

IMO it's those "glassy" synth counterpoint melodies and harmonies that make Numan's sound unique and raises it above the competition. On the singe, "Cars", the way the synth lines diverge at the end of the song adds the perfect touch, for instance.

Gary Numan's nasal singing voice is that of a synthesizer, or perhaps of a synthesized human. Very fitting for his musical and thematic world.

Evening? For starters it doesn't happen at some universal specific time every day. Right on the Equator (for instance in the city whose inhabitants sometimes call Nairobbery) it's going to happen sometime before 6 every day of the year (and dawn is going to start a bit before sunrise, so, before 6AM). In parts of Norway, around Midsummer, it doesn't happen - or maybe it merges with dawn - not something I've seen. In Northern Europe it seems to start at about 10PM in the Summer (and I've heard it's all over by 4PM in the Winter, but I've managed to avoid experiencing that firsthand). In the Cape of Good Hope, evening is winding up at about 8 PM for much of the Summer, but along the muddy grey-green Limpopo, I think by 7 it's already dark, no matter the season. I think in the South of the South of the South Island of New Zealand, Summer evenings end at 11PM (and then just a few hours later, the dawn breaks). I think maybe it's only evening-proper until just after the Sun has gone down, starting when it's low enough in the sky to turn it a dark blue, and put some peach tints on the clouds? And then after that it's "twilight", maybe? Sometimes I actually go and look this stuff up; that's why I'm blathering on, so. (And as you can see, I tend to forget what I found out, every time.) And if you're thinking (oh no?!) *Not Again* , so did *Shawn Lane* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8eDV4fJcRUI.html

Hey JP, old chum. I have been known from time to time to open up about the WOW moments of my teenage years on your esteemed channel. The Pleasure Principle was one of them. Just...the otherness of it spoke to the callow youth I once was (and still am on occasion). Also, Cedric Sharpley and Paul Gardiner (both RIP) are one of my favourite rhythm sections ever. Such muscularity amongst all them gorgeous Moogs.

Actually, the musical direction logically follows the lyrics because musically it sounds very robotic and metallic, but again the rhythm section keeps moving and vibrating and keeps the human aspect while at first this track seems very cold and emotionless, whereas it is far from being the case!

There is an album before replicas known as the blue album it's that album he first went into record a new wave/punk album but famously discovered a moog in the room touched a button and was instantly amazed with the resulting sound. So he there then added some synths sound to that album. It's also a great album lyrically very dystopian but it's like watching the formation of replicas and then The machine age albums so it too is worth a listen.

Would it be a trifle flippant to sing "Waz it U or waz it Me Or was it X or Zee?" over this? Such a fine line between hip-dom and parody. I enjoyed both but prefer the parody frankly, Mr Shankly. Also, would it be inappropriate to suggest "She blinded Me With Science" helped music fans regard Thomas Dolby as nothing more than a Nerdy One Hit Novelty Wonder? In the same vein, was I wrong to label Gary Numan as "soulless" back in 1979? Judging by this, the Jury's still out. His voice. Does it have A Soul? Dolby Noise Reduction or Numan Nu-Metal? Both! Don't forget Randy Newman either. Unless of course we've heard too much of You've Got a Friend in me which will probably condemn him to the We Don't Need to Check it out Bad Reputation Dodgy Image Reaction Reject Bin. Relax Enjoy Yourself indeed!
