According to Gary himself, Billy Currie played violin throughout the whole album ( you could infer its because of record company objections that he could not be credited). Curries violin was often fed through guitar pedals into a detuned sound in the background, according to Gary in his autobiography. Those same guitar pedals were the secret sauce to this album!

For an old man, things get "Complex". For a Numan, it's simple!👴--👶----✌️&♥️

That reminds me: Gary Numan is actually older than Gary Oldman! 😄

One of my favorite tracks on the album, Numan shows his vulnerability in the harsh, hard world.

What Gary says very much informs his next album 'Telekon' (a sort of 'the dark side of fame' album which like this splendid track is a beautifully melancholic album).

As the single after Cars, a fantastic, heroic choice, although it's no surprise that the marketplace didn't agree. But maybe a few buyers who didn't get what they expected got turned on to something a bit more sophisticated. I see some people saying that he lost it after Telekon, but I would at least give the following album, Dance (the title is ironic) a go, it's pretty amazing.

It was Chris Payne who played the Violin on the track

plenty of atmosphere / verging on soulful? I'm impressed.

It's Chris Payne the keyboard player who plays the viola on this excellent mood piece.

Everything up to and including the next album "Telekon" are absolute fire. After that he lost his way. He's admitted as much himself. He started shifting to pure dance music with female backing vocals etc. and it just didn't work. He got depressed and disgusted, his hair fell out and he became a full-time airplane pilot. Jump ahead 30 years. He got hair transplants, said "fuck it" and switched to wigs. With some influence from Nine inch nails he suddenly started cranking out the best music of his career. I'd put his 2017 album "Savage" or the 2021 "Intruder" up against anything from back in the day.

Telekon is my favourite, and what it loses in terms of a live band dynamic it gains in depth and complexity.

I can't abide the new material it's far too dense and there are no melodies. It's crystal clear that the old band had much more of a hand in the songs than Numan cares to admit. The industrial material all sounds the same there is little variation and his producer seems to be a one-trick pony. Replicas, PP, Telekon and Dance are pure gold. BTW he didn't become a full time pilot and he didn't shift to pure dance music either.

I've got tickets to see him next month in London, Can't wait as I've loved listening to him since the late 70's as a teenager

Why is his hair transplants all boomers can talk about with Numan? Is it because they too are balding. Don't understand.

Chris Payne came up with the main melody. Great track but Metal was the natural sequel to Cars.

I’m quite sure it is Chris Payne playing the violin/viola on this track. Thanks for a great review and reviewing Gary Numan from the 70-80s, not many have; don’t forget the first Tubeway Army album!😎👍

I do like it a lot, but at the same time it has always bothered me that the low notes from the piano clash with the bass and thus probably should've been played an octave higher.

I believe that's a viola you're hearing, which is credited on this album to Chris Payne. That said, I think I hear a violin duetting with the viola in parts.

@@CAdams6398 Oh ! "Observer" is actually one of my favorite tracks from The Pleasure Principle. It's almost a replica of "Cars" but in fact as it comes before "Cars" in the order of appearance on the album, one can wonder if consequently, "Cars" would not be a rehash of "Observer".😉

Yes, my favourite Gary Numan song, largely because of the leisurely instrumental opening but the vocal melody is also beautiful and rarely is the word 'plaintive' more applicable.

It cuts off short. (You were warned after the fact. Inspiring, isn't it? Look at that longer version your search has revealed. Might it run the whole way? Might it even have some sax? Who knows? Inspirational like I said.) Meantime here's *Fred Frith* saying *Don't Cry For Me* ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ivfQd98VckE.html (It has rhythms for everyone.)
