Ever wondered what the inside of a gas dryer valve looks like? And what's the purpose of having two separate valves in one component? What about those mysterious "safety" and "booster" coils? What are "split coils"? This is an excerpt from a longer webinar where we explain how gas dryer ignition systems work in detail. Once you understand how these systems work, you can diagnose gas dryer ignition problem operationally-- that is, by watching what it does and doesn't do: Does the ignitor glow briefly and then go out? Does the ignitor not glow at all? These are clues that point to specific malfunctions in the dryer ignition circuit.

Is the operation of the range gas valve the same?

No, completely different. Ranges use Hot Surface Ignition system where the ignitor is in series with the heating coil inside the gas valve. Dryers use a split coil system where wattage to the ignitor is controlled by the radiant sensor.

@spinny2593 21 minutes ago I have checked everything continuity good on all fuses and well everything. So I changed the coils. You are the only one that talks about the metal sleeve. The small one in the back does not have one and I can't tell anywhere if it should or not. I have done everything and it still will not heat. Get my glow and then click it shuts off and nothing.

Sounds like failed valve coils. Easy and inexpensive fix.

MST Schematic Workshop Webinar 10-22-2015. I am lost looking at the wiring and the why with so many direct points of wire connections and then adding in the holding coil. The major question is why and how. And I am clueless on how to do it while I am logged on as a paid member to as this question.

This is just a 4-minute EXCERPT of the entire hour-long video so it’s natural you would have questions. You should watch the full webinar here: appliantology.org/topic/63109-mst-office-hours-5222017-gas-dryer-ignition-systems/ If you still have questions, post them in that topic I linked you to above. From the title you gave in your post, it sounds like you’re referring to a different webinar recording altogether. You can find that webinar at Appliantology and post your questions in that topic.
