***Additional Description***
Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), also known as Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding, is my go-to process. However, it has some limitations, particularly on thicker material. Many of these can be overcome by using gas Shielded Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW-G), also referred to by the trade name Dual Shield. In many cases, both of these processes can be done by the same machine and shielding gas. This video provides a brief introduction to the FCAW-G process.

Very glad that you have raised this topic, a video on the applications for gas shielded flux core and maybe differences in weld properties would be appreciated. Also it would be interesting to know the difference in cost per kg of weld with fluxcore, gas shielded and then gas shielded fluxcore to understand cost vs benefit. Gas shielded flux core looks very clean and spatter free compared to the gas only process. Great videos thank you for your effort in making them and the clear easy to understand explanations.

Hello An effective and clear explanation, as in all your videos. I am interested in purchasing a Flux Cored Arc Welding welder But, both eby and amazon offer lots of types and models, which is really confusing which one to buy. I ask for your recommendation please in the matter .It is desirable to have a quality system, reasonable price, and to the level of an amateur. Many thanks

I would like to weld Stainless Steel without switching my tank to a tri mix. I was thinking of a good dual shielded stainless (its expensive). For me being a garage maker I am starting to find that time and labor put into keeping sanding, painting, removing protective oil that has oxidized etc and then painting... buying more expensive stainless starts to look like a better option more and more. If you have videos for people who want to step into mig stainless for the least costs that would be fun.

You can pulse MIG stainless on the HTP Pro Pulse MIGs with only argon and CO2, but NOT C25. Its a very specific mix: 98% At + 2% CO2. I can build you a custom gas mixer to dial in such a specific gas mix.

Thank you Tim. I like that the shock loading is good. I am adding a large boss on the top of a Mack truck rear end to control the side loads . This will allow me to use Peterbilt Air/Leaf suspension for the up and down loads. Airbags will make a much better ride. The rear end could get shock loads, but this is being installed on a 1956 B- Model Mack. Therefore I won't be hauling big loads any longer. I was planning to use a 6011 root pass and 7018 cover, but dual shield MIG sounds better.
@bobhorner8271
@bobhorner8271 2 года назад
Hi Tim, awesome channel! My question is that in this video to get dual shield, you've started with a MIG process (GMAW to be specific, electrode positive), and added a flux core wire to get the dual shield advantages. I have a Titanium 200 multi process welder, but in the three years I've been welding, I've only used flux core. For an upcoming project that I'm planning involving welding very thick mild steel, I was considering adding a C25 gas to the flux core process (staying electrode negative). Would this work to get the dual shield?
@TimWelds
@TimWelds 2 года назад
Thanks! No, in addition to the gas, it also requires a different type of cored wire and DCEP.
@leonardpearlman4017
@leonardpearlman4017 2 года назад
Lincoln (Originator of this process) says not to do that, they go into detail in their booklet about this kind of wire (available free online). You'd make it WORSE I think. You can use CO2 with this also, by the way.

Can this be used on material under 1/8"? How does it do with large differences in material thickness? Say 1/2" to 1/8"? just how sensitive is it to wind/outdoor use?
@madhouse5213
@madhouse5213 Год назад
it's better to use a solid wire in most cases on thin metal due to the bead being larger on fluxcore. less cleanup. and more forgiving for thin material. for welding thicker material, angle your gun more into the thicker material, otherwise you'll get some pretty bad undercut. welding outdoors is okay. not ideal but if there isn't too much wind you should get good welds. set up a couple shields if you need to

I wanted to fact check myself before replying to this, so I just ran out to the garage and loaded that spool of wire onto my Harbor Freight Titanium MIG 170. The welds came out great, just like in this video. There will be some limitations in terms of amperage and duty cycle when compared to the HTP, but it will definitely get the job done. I used two sets of settings on the MIG170, which both worked great - 375 in/min & 24.5 volts as well as 300 in/min & 23 volts for this .035" wire.

@TimWelds
@TimWelds Год назад
I haven't used that machine, but I have run .035" dual shield in several similar output machines, including the Harbor Freight Titanium MIG 170, so I think it would. I wouldn't go bigger than .035" on that machine, though. All that is needed is the right size contact tip, the wire and it usually uses the same gas as standard short circuit MIG welding (C25 or CO2). I'll put a link to the specific wire I use below. You can also search out other brands. ESAB's brand name is Dual Shield and Lincoln's is Outershield. usaweld.com/products/htp-america-e71t-1m-dual-shield-mig-welding-wire?ref=timwelds

No, this wire needs gas. E71T-11 or a quality brand of E71T-GS are the most common for use without gas. For these gasless versions, the polarity needs to be switched to electrode negative.

First you have to find the gasless flux cored aluminum wire … I am looking now for 10+ years …. But every time i go to harbor freight and ask for it they tell me its sold out ….. Now all joking aside …. Gas less wire ( steel wire that is) needs to react with the ambient air to work correctly …. Aluminum can NOT under any circumstances come in contact with the outside atmosphere, it needs a shielded atmosphere. Either you need to use 100% argon ( as in mig or tig) or the shielding atmosphere comes from the flux burning of the outside of the stick rod while the spray transfer happens on the inside of the shielded atmosphere …..
@tadman3d
@tadman3d 2 года назад
@@ZILAwelds yeah. After more research it seems aluminum flux core does not exist
@ZILAwelds
@ZILAwelds 2 года назад
@@tadman3d if you want to weld aluminum and if you want to be successful with mig you either buy a lot of grinding wheels and only weld materials thicker than 1/8" of an inch or you will need to find a way to control your settings while you are welding .... (voltage And wire speed that is). this way you can start hotter, and as the material heats up reduce your settings and if you come to a section of less than perfect fit up you can reduce it evermore .... in contrast to steel welding aluminum is a very heat driven process .... if you weld the front of a t joint and your settings are slightly too cold, then you flip it around and weld the backside the settings are way too hot ... so unless you let the material cool down to the exact same temperature from before you originally started welding you will have inconsistent results even using the same settings and technique ... so if you can "read" the puddle and adjust your settings as you go - that would be perfect ....

I have changed higher amps, lower volts, lower amps, higher volts etc etc... cant understand why i just cant seem to get a decent bead. I find myself having to grind, weld, grind, weld, grind, weld... and so on. I am welding square tubing, if i slow down i burn holes so i lower the amps and volts but then i have a crappy arch... any ideas or advise? love the channel man!
