This video is a summary of my Houdini/Unreal river project. It shows the basic idea of creating a procedural river, adapting the terrain to its flow and dynamically placing particle systems.

Hello Simon, I have a little question for you: in my project I had already create somes digs on my terrain to simulate water in Houdini . My scene is a old tower near to a lake. The problem is that a Lakes have more deep than rivers .. Your method seems very good and the procedural system is so exited for me like a Environment artist. Do you think that I can use this method for my lake or it's better to use a liquid simulation in houdini with my terrain like collider and make it a digital asset and transfert to Unreal .

Oh shit, you're alive. I love your content. Wait. The channel you watched tutorials from is a Houdini channel. Does that mean you can bake Houdini simulations into textures, and that's how you got your river textures?

You can bake simulation data into texture like for example liquids but this is not how the river-water was done. The river is a simple geometry but the flow-map, which defines where the water flows into which direction, was baked in Houdini and imported to Unreal. Does this help? this is cool but rivers meander and leave big places dry where they previously eroded. and also sometimes the river width is inconsistent.

When I try to add the hda to Houdini it crashes, any ideas?

I also have installed H18 and it crashed for me too UNTIL I installed the new Side FX Labs Tools (that's how they called now, instead of "Game Dev Tools") and now I can install the HDA. Here is a video how to install the SideFx Labs Tools: www.sidefx.com/tutorials/sidefx-labs-installation/ I hope this works for you too! :)
