I can tell you right now, my husband had an affair, and we went to their pastoral care, and the first thing they checked for, is whether or not, we were tithing. Once they found out, we were tying, they approved a number of sessions. During those sessions, I felt like the pastor that was counseling us Put the blame on me, the wife. They accused me of not forgiving and bringing up the past. However, my husband at the time was doing shady things. They did not say anything that held him accountable and the time it was over. He came out smelling like roses. A year later, we had another issue surface where I thought he was having another affair and they placed us with a 911 couples team again that couple waste blame on me. So the part where he’s talking about you’ve seen marriages restored, absolutely not. They did not hold my husband accountable whatsoever. After 25 years I had to file for a divorce because of his continuous infidelity. Shame on Gateway.

I am so sorry you had to go through that twice! That sounded like 100% manipulative behavior from narcissists. We went to his churches for 5 years, but left 2022 for other reasons. During the time we were there, I always felt some of the pastors were very sexism, I even brought up few times to my boyfriend. And of course, he didn’t think much about that. Now reading what you went through, I guess, this is the culture there then.
Morris and his wife and every elder at that church who knew and failed to report it to the police should GO TO JAIL! If Bill Cosby had to do jail time for a crime 40 years ago that did not involve a child....Morris with his admission and his team AND HIS WIFE should be thrown in prison TODAY!!!

It's not an apology, it's a commercial for their church. Pretty quickly he switches from the victim to a list of why "our church" is so great and how it's changed lives. Wrong, Jesus changes lives! But thats not what he's saying. So basically they STILL don't get it. "I know bad things happened but good things are happening too so it helps balance the scale". That's exactly the culture that fosters abuse in the first place. They still just don't get it.
Pre scripted damage control. I have some questions; 1. Why was Morris allowed to resign? Why was his resignation accepted? Why wasn't he first suspended pending further investigation and then fired? 2. Now that Morris officially resigned, does he draw a retirement package from the church? 3. If Morris resigned and wasn't fired, why didn't the leaders at least demand he directly address the church congregation?
Unlike other denominations where elders and deacons lead, GateWay is Morris’ church. Another words, Pastor Morris is the boss and elders are his employees who get paid through Morris.
It is horrific when injustice like that happens and a guy comes up and brings up that things have been hard for him.... If these people had any real integrity they would shut the church down and Elders would go find a church elsewhere. He needs to stop making it about him and the church.
Agree 100%. Never once did he use the angry word. For someone apologizing for being so "emotional", that is a natural emotion to have "confessed to the church" to have had over the molestations. against the child.
If I didn’t know what actually in the news in the past week, I would totally think Gateway is under some sort of attack and he is asking all people to make this church stronger. Unfortunately for him, I have been following the news, his tears just seem so fake, he is not sorry about what Cindy went through with Robert Morris or the elders, he is sorry that they may lose members/donors after this. If he would come out and say he is sorry for what happened, everyone is welcome to look for other churches as long as stay in faith, I would respect him way more than now.

The only reason why this church made a statement is because of the social media coverage this situation has gotten. And they specifically chose this elder to make a statement because he maybe the one that is more relatable to the members and also he can shed a great tear, with his soft spoken voice. If social media wasn’t so prevalent, this issue would have continued to be swept under the rug.

Yes, her parents should have made that call almost 40 yrs ago. Then a trial could have been had and jail time served if he was found guilty. Yes, Cindy could have filed charges over all these years and I can’t imagine with all the years counseling they didn’t discuss this. Why? Use discernment and wisdom from the Lord to see the truth, and if you lack wisdom, then ask and He will give it in full.

I think I heard from another take on the matter, that Cindy was paid "x" amount of money for damages, etc. and was asked to sign an NDA. Hush money. I can't remember if she took the deal but I remember someone speaking on it.
You know what's sad? They're just going to put another heretic on the stage who can speak and present themselves well and nobody will even notice the false doctrine. I can’t believe how many came back to that church. We have family who work there and they haven’t spoken to us in years. They will buy all of this and continue to work there. It is a cult and I don’t buy this at all. He should have been fired right away. He needs to be charged and in prison. False teaching was just part of the problem.

Robert Morris had already decided to give his own son contol over Gateway Church. So he did not give up the church. He gave his responsibilities to his son who is also a pastor.
I listened to the room 12 sermon and by the time I got done Robert Maurice had me convinced that my eight year old salvation was not real because I had not really turned away from sand during my teenage years. 1981 was his supposed transformation in the hotel room, and that’s when he actually Claimed he got saved. He said he turned away from sin when it came to sexual immorality. That was a total lie, because from 82 to 87. He was molesting this girl. They also guilt you into making you think that your marriage wasn’t blessed because maybe you weren’t tithing! He also preached a sermon that scared a friend of mine away. He talked about women being overweight and an attractive and maybe that’s why a husband and wife may not have a good marriage. I don’t know the specifics of that sermon or I would quote the date and time. I feel so betrayed. I feel like my marriage could have survived with the right discipleship for my husband. They failed my family! Now my 20 year old daughter and my 14 year old daughter struggle with belief because they prayed for their daddy to come home. He ended up leaving us and marrying the woman he had the affair with, and still attends gateway! Unbelievable!

If ever there was a time to skip the emotionally manipulative and sappy background music it would have been at at this time. That REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.
When my husband decided to cheat the first time I was told to quit my ministry because my time was better spent on my knees instead of meeting with my sisters in lord for our ministry. This was because we decided to go to counseling and when the counseling stopped I would be welcomed back. Oh yes my husband was an elder in this 10,000 member church and he was not asked to step down from his elder ship. I could not stay at that church which I loved with such an attitude toward women. We ended up moving to another state and my husband had an affair with his secretary and our marriage dissolved and our family and her family was destroyed. Jesus loves women as much as he loves men. I think in this run away society these types of sin has bled into the church and I’m thankful for churches that actually deal with such sin instead of brushing it under the rug so to say. I am walking away from the church completely. That is gateway, not God, and not Jesus! I pray that the statue of limitations have not been met. I met charges will be pressed, and my final thoughts are that they are trying to salvage the church because his son was going to take over and become the pastor which means financially, Robert will always be taken care of, this is to keep the doors open and the money coming in. There was not a mention of Deb’s role in this. She absolutely knew and she kept it hidden. Everyone knew he was preaching that he got completely saved and quit sexually sinning in 1981. I find it hard to believe that nobody was privy to an affair with a young lady from 1982 to 1987. Which means the whole time I was sitting in the pews I was being lied to with his room 12 testimony.
I was there 10 years and ironically my daughter was 12 .. i feel like the whole time it was a scam, and to get my 35,000 worth of tithes that i was scared to not give because he teaches that you will be cursed if you don’t.. to those who are in need and spread, I was and still am a single mom that didn’t receive child support so this was kind of tough but God made a way …part of me wants to sue the church to get my money back, after all, he did always offer a moneyback guarantee.. just disgusted with this

I always looked forward to his guest speakers more so than I did hearing him. I stuck around for years even though my gut feeling kept telling me he was wrong about things, my kids loved the children’s ministry. After the direction we received in our marriage, that should have been a sign for me to get out!!! I never felt that I was actually saved because of the story he told about his wife when she got saved when she was eight. And the story about him being transformed in 1981 and how he never went back to sexual immorality! I feel lost and brokenhearted. The other mentor for our marriage was Anthony Evans church, and he just stepped down. I really feel the church failed me because I did get my husband into church. I feel like if they would’ve intervened properly it’s possible he would’ve turned around. I’m so angry now Because the head of my household was chopped off and my family is slowly dwindling. I don’t know how to be a good mom and my daughter blames me for different things. I’m really upset right now. Gateway freaking failed my family and I’m more upset with myself because I should have walked away years ago.

Hi. Thank for this. I am a born again lover of Jesus Christ. I went thru something like this as the Pastor's wife. My ex-hubby used manipulative words to describe some past sin that I was not aware of prior to marrying him. When it was exposed, he was sat down and I temporarily led the church. One thing for sure is that the entire congregation were victims. And we had to remember that we all serve God and the church belong to Him; not flawed humans. Our members made the congregation what it was, not one single man with title of Pastor. There are no words to explain how I felt; 12 years later and many of us are still struggling, yet running the race. God could have exposed Robert and many others along time ago, but He did not. One thing for sure, everything will be alright.
He does not come across as genuine but rather his actions and words appear scripted. It’s hard to watch his speech, sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Such a shame to make themselves sound like the victim instead of take responsibility for what they failed to do for the victim.

The Messed Up Church channel has a great compilation video of megachurch pastors praising Morris in the past. I find it hard to believe that there wasn't some rumblings among them about his abuse.
The fact that they reinstated him back then and completely disregarded the victim shows that they were desperate for him to keep preaching sermons that bring in the money for the church and I'm starting to realize a pattern with some churches 🧐

If my pastor gets the sniffles he always moves the microphone away from his nose. this guy's strategy is to put it right up to the microphone so we can all hear him sniffing.
Since they are having this investigated, he should have just stated that and apologized to the victim. Then once the investigation is completed, he should have addressed the church with the findings. And the elders who knew about this all along should apologized to the church and be fired. And if charges can be brought against Robert Morris they should call the police and turn him in, which is what they should have done to begin with instead of letting him resign. Doing it this way made it clear it was all about them and their church.

I agree with you 100%. I didn't hear a prayer for the victim. I didn't hear a lot of encouragement for praying for and supporting the victim in her "difficult season". Just so sad, all of this & it's happening more than we hear about. Why wasn't the talk about what the Bible has to say about dealing with this kind of situation? Why was no one up there, teaching that? This was more about forgiving the wrongdoer than dealing with his wrongdoings. (And, notice the music in the background playing on people's emotions. Were they told to play that melody? Let me stop being so petty.)
I agree with everything that was concluded here by All Things Theology. I don't know the name of this gentleman, but he is right on. The legal firm brought on to investigate Morris and his actions from 1982 to 1987 is a joke. The whole world knows what happened. But what is unclear is Morris's actions subsequent to his launch of Gateway and whether the elders continued to cover for his sins. That should be the focus of this so called investigation! Also, I fully agree that really bad theology is part of the root cause of this debacle. Morris was a heretic and I am left to wonder, what is worse...his child predatory behavior or misleading hundreds of thousands of people with a false gospel every week for 35 years!

The victim asked for 50,000 dollars to help with mental health medical bills. If the elders at Gateway Church, were truly concerned for the victim, they should have the church pay the 50,000 dollars.

This is definitely hard to hear and I am praying for everyone involved. I do feel that although it is about the victim, you still have to consider the feelings and hurt for the church. Because after something like this happens it can turn people away from The Church and God. The church didn’t do it - the man did it. So my prayer is that the church can continue! Gateway's response has been damaged control. At this point they have to keep the doors open and the ties and offerings coming in to keep the big machine going. This is startling proof that a church the church size and all the glitter that is has does not mean that it is a biblical Church based on the word.

Another thing I would like to add is that the Church is supposed to mourn those who committed such an act not pretend that nothing happened and also the other Churches who supported the ministry of Robert Morris in the past until now they too should mourn because they let a ravenous wolf teach false doctrine into the church like Mike Todd for example, who is a false teacher by the way. I feel that this argument is just from a lens of being critical, not from an open heart. These members of gateway have been questioning whether their experiences in the church for the last few decades have even been valid. He did express sympathy for Cindy and apologized to her and her family. Also discussing the church is very necessary. They are not mutually exclusive.
