My Honours project - a documentary style short film about collectors of vinyl records.
With this film I hope to shed light on the sentiments that come along with collecting physical records in a world where most music is now streamed or downloaded.

As a 22 year old, I grew up with cassettes and CDs. When I turned 18 my best friend bought me a copy of Queen’s “A Night At The Opera”. And from that day on I’ve been hooked on vinyl. Forget CDs, and MP3s. My heart is forever with vinyl

i started collecting jazz vinyl when i was fourteen in minneapolis in 1958 ..bill evans, miles davis, john coltrane. i remember buying coltranes giant steps. i thought the cover was so cool and the music like nothing i had heard of before. so mysterious! family moved to los angeles in 1961 and thats when the really serious collecting began.. ray averys rare records in hollywood at the time, and sams record store in the black area of los angeles. in later years in san francisco. vinyl is definitly the archival medium of choice...a great ride as they say!!!!
@specificallybroad

Thanks for taking the time to share that Allan. Vinyl records are relics that really do last forever. It's not surprising to me that it's making a comeback because they hold much more history and meaning than digital alternatives.

I think one of the best arguments for vinyl is the longevity o the medium itself. You can find records that are 80 years old now that still play well. I wonder if cd's/digital archiving will stand up to the test of time like vinyl has
@specificallybroad
@specificallybroad 6 лет назад
Vinyl lasts decades! CD's are still inherently digital and they are no where near as robust as vinyl is. There is just so much that vinyl offers that other mediums do not, and that's why I love it.

Both you guys are TOTALLY WRONG CDs if we don't scratch them they can last longer than a human lifetime seriouslly : I have CDs since 1991 OVERPLAYED and they sound EXCATLY the same i have replaced my CDplayers and they sound the same too but my vinyl overplayed records don't and keep replacing the styluses : The lazer of the CDplayers cannot harm the recorded surface of the CD unlike the stylus can , tapes EVEN WORST Somewhere in 1997 maybe 1998 i've read in a hi-fi audio magazine about the durability of > and the article said that CDs may last comfortably 100 years You may won't believe what i said but it's fine with me : But in reallity my CDs from 1991 sounds the same yet the PLs not > CDs have clearer and noiseless sound all they need is that good production recording not this SHIT LOUDNESS WAR From the other hand LPs have noise problems < surface and motor noise and wow n' flatter they may sound sweeter n' softer but this thing comes from the distortions records have in other words the sound of records is colorized Anyway i do know you will dissagre with me but again it's fine with me i just wanted to clarify afew things . Good-bye dudes and have happy listenings with the music formats you all LOVE MOST actually this one is WHAT IT MATTERS FINALLY :-)

Music has been big my whole life. At one time I had a massive Cd collection for a teenager. They were stolen. That was 20 yrs ago. And while I just recently(6mos) bought my first record and table, I never once bought a digital song or album. Ive just been streaming music from streaming sites like Pandora and Spotify. I live that records are tactile, tangible and oh so exciting. I feel an immediate connection with a record. It brings back that magic u felt at 15 buying a Cd and looking at the album notes until u got home to listen to it because cars dint really have Cd players back then.

When you buy a song from iTunes, you do not own the music. What you own is the license to play the song. And the license is not even transferable. You cannot give your iTunes "collection" to anyone if you abide by their TOS. That's one thing that I like about vinyl, though it also holds true for CD's or cassettes. But, it's something you can hold and when you pass away it can be handed down to your kids. If they want them. :)
@specificallybroad

Fascinating and uplifting! Looking through my vinyl collection recently I found an album which looked and played mint. It was 53 years old! The same day I went through my CD collection and discovered a disc which was less than 10 years old. The aluminium backed medium had stared to break down and it wouldn't play. That was an eye opener. I use a record cleaning machine and can't over stress the importance of keeping your LPs clean. It preserves them and preserves the life of your stylus. Well worth the investment. Long live vinyl! It's such a tangible treasure and for me is worth its weight in gold.

That story at 8:56!!! Wow!! Most of us will never get to tell a story like that EVER!! LOL. Reminds me of the time I met David Porter (who wrote for Stax records). I had a chance to chat with him for a long time and he was telling stories about working on Sittin On the Dock Of Bay, Soulfinger, Hold On I'm Comin', and all those classic R&B hits. As he is sharing these stories it just kind of hits me about 20 mins in....every time he say "Otis this.." or "Issac this.." Dammit he is talking about Otis Redding and Issac Hayes lol!! It totally blew my mind when I actually paid attention to that fact. I bet listening to this guys stories would pretty darn awesome as well. To have a story that involves Paige and Richards is just amazing!

I love that you chose this for your Honours project. How bloody cool! I really enjoyed watching the doco - the people you included in it are really interesting as are the reasons for their collections. How cool is that Rolling Stones tour case !! I am a child of the 70s and stopped buying vinyl when CDs overtook and eclipsed everything. Fortunately, I kept my collection and as of recently have gotten back into collecting vinyl records. Rather than going for numerous records, I prefer to research the album I want as extensively as possible and go for the best sounding (audiophile) pressing. These records are more expensive than regular reissues however, if chosen wisely they are a tangible investment with the value only going up if kept and stored well. Thank you for your film - fantastic stuff!

people make a mistake depending on streaming platforms 100%! any album from streaming can get pulled and go out of print at anytime! for example nuclear assault's "survive" Album went out of print and pulled, just recently Whitesnake's Album's "self title" and "slide it in" and one other was pulled because of copyright disputes! if you would have bought the record or CD you would always have it!
@specificallybroad
@specificallybroad 7 лет назад
Mate I 100% agree! If you have vinyl record, you physically own that album. No one can take it away from you. Everyone has music on their computers and phones now, but if you loose that device, their goes "your" music.

Yeah it sure is! Love that turntable, it has that retro feel to it. He recently updated his turntable and speakers though!

That was the first "good" turntable I ever bought, back around 1875. My parents still have it. I had to replace the belt a few years ago...

0:20 Where can I get one of these?. A Gorgeous Girl Who likes Records, Wow. Everything I bought home wanted Me to throw the Lot out. So I threw them out Instead. 3:10 the Acetate Is Not what Is used to press the Records from. It Is a Pre-Demo of the Unfinished LP or Single. Like a Pr-Cuser to the Finished Record. Elvis Presley would have a Box of Acetates (Worth a Fortune Now) And he would play them when traveling on Early version of a Crosley, So He could learn them, and also Listen to new Material for Him to consider to Record Himself. Quite a lot of the other big groups did this as well. I bought the Entire 75 chart singles over three days with the Bonus money from My first Proper Job. In the End of December start of January, When the Chart stalls for a week with no new entries In 1973-74, And I have added every New entry since Now 2020 and I am a Vintage Video DJ. And still have them all like Carl Cox here, and still play them when I can. The only thing that gets Me Is when they say, "You can get anything You want on MP3 or Streaming" Nooooooooooooooooo You can't! there Is Thousands of Tracks that Is Only available On Vinyl. I am Digitally doing transfers to MP3 or CD's Because People want those tracks but cannot find them. I even Do them for Radio Stations Who struggle to fill In Requests.

Among the many films about record collecting that I found on RU-vid, this has to be one of the nicest! Your choice of interviewees is excellent, each giving different angles on the subject. I enjoyed it very much - thank you! For a more morbid look at the sometimes funny, sometimes sad underbelly of record collecting addiction, may I suggest taking a look at "Alan Zweig's Vinyl": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nkCMSrvOTAo.html

crispymolecule Thankyou for your kind words! It was really important to focus on the PEOPLE with this doco. It's about the collectors and what vinyl means to them! I saw a lot of documentaries that focused on the sound and that's only one element of record collecting! There is so much more magic to it then just that!
