Since its invention over 100 years ago, the vinyl record has revolutionized the way people hear and feel recorded music. In the 1980s, video killed the radio star and CDs killed the record industry. Now-with CD and digital sales on the decline-vinyl records is in the midst of an epic comeback.
A collector of records since childhood, Alex Rodriguez has turned his addiction into a career. Follow Alex across America as he discovers and curates records for Coachella Music Festival’s on-site record store. Dig into the world of record collecting, as Alex spends weeks on the road, buying records and swapping stories with fellow collectors, musicians, and producers.
Featuring interviews with Pete Rock, Lenny Kaye, Monalisa Murray, Oliver Wang, Valerie Calano, “Slug” and “Ant” from Atmosphere, Sheila Burgel, Steven Blush, Rebecca Birmingham, Jamison Harvey “DJ Prestige”, and Kevin Patrick. Record Safari gives viewers an intimate inside look into the world of record collecting through some of the industry’s most knowledgeable enthusiasts. Is it just a hobby or something deeper and more meaningful? What explains vinyl records' steady popularity in the age of streaming?
The film explores the many reasons why people become vinyl enthusiasts and hopes to show viewers why the format has been and remains a powerful medium for music. Is it just a hobby or something deeper? What explains vinyl records steady popularity in the age of streaming? Tag along for the journey as Alex answers these questions and searches high and low for these sought-after pieces of plastic.

I have been a huge fan of vinyl my entire life. My youngest memories include my father introducing me to his favorite albums, many of which I still have today. I have spent countless hours searching through bins for that hidden gem. Family obligations and space considerations threw me off track for years, but I'm getting back in. I'm settling on a good reliable cleaning process for my older albums, getting a new turntable and this doc helped light a fire under me. Your cross country expedition reminded me of my love for analog music and the addiction I first felt as a kid.

57:50 - the part about the colored vinyl is not necessarily true in every instance… particularly clear vinyl. I read recently that clear is actually the cleanest, purest form of vinyl because it does not have the stuff added to it. From what I read, they have to add the stuff even to make it black. I think sound quality has more to do with the quality of their production process than the color of the material. There’s plenty of black vinyl that sounds bad, color that sounds good, and vice versa.

Definitely enjoyed this. In the opening, Alex plays a record while introducing himself and I recognized the song. At the end of the movie he plays the song again and shares it's history and significance to him. I know that song as "Strawberries" sung by Jerry Butler released on 45 on the Vee Jay label in 1963 which I bought around that time and to this day it is still one of my favorite records. The vinyl culture indeed connects people.

Great documentary. Whether you are vinyl collector or cd collector as I am, you have to love this documentary. Of course we all have crossed path with vinyl, the important thing here is the music and the legacy left to us. However, vinyl is more important because in a moment time, in a different world that we miss that piece of plastic had a great importance in someone's life and possible we will not find it in any different format. We have to appreciate that.

57:55 Clear is actually the best colour. The black is added. That's why there are so many audiophile clear records these days ;).

What a ride, that was so cool, thanks for sharing. Was great to see the Attic be able to rebuild, and very cool to meet so many owners. Also interesting that the U-Haul box is the standard for Record transportation
