Gathering Mussels and Oysters in Taipa, Doubtless Bay,
Far North New Zealand.
Waters cold but still got out there in my 3mm Wettie Wetsuit.
Perfect for Summer but its a bit thin for the colder time's.
Stocked as to get back out in the Water for a Dive though, can't wait for the next Mission.

I've only scored one cray out there so far but I'm hopping that's all gonna change by this summer... I've got a waka in the pipeline's just sorting it out at the mo but thank you for putting it out there bro... I'm sure you'll find a buyer in no time...

I recall 40yr ago Taipa was abundant in kai moana. We visited when we had the fuel to gather tua tua mostly cos it was accessible. Never dove there but we knew there was plenty mussels and crays... Taipa like all other places are being ravaged by everyone because of its accessibility. Need a yearly rahui to replenish the stock and make it easier for local iwi to feed the whanau. Kia ora cuzzy for your efforts supplying the whanau. ❤💛💞🙏 What's your email bro.... like to talk about your wet suit.

Tēna koe ē hoa, that's the best plan... can't beat a Rāhui to replenish the Kai Moana.... it's definitely beneficial for the Ika, the reef system and the people.... we as Kaitiaki can only try our best to provide and protect... thank you so much for sharing with us 😃 our email address is sonnyandchar.thl@gmail.com Ngā mihi nui Sonny & Char

Cracks me up seeing everyone from up home (kaitaia) complaining about the water being cold. I'm down in Dunedin now and every time I go back up north in winter it's like a Dunedin summer haha. Mean video though bro, hypes me up for my next mission up there! Subscribed!

Awesome video brother, another option instead of using soap to lube up your wetsuit, is Guar Gum, you can get it from most health food stores or online, Guar gum is made from a seed native to tropical Asia and has an amazing ability to thicken up any cold liquid with just a tiny amount to create a lubricating gel, its 100 percent natural and edible, goes mint with the wettie wetsuits and is cheap too, one teaspoon for about a liter of water, a little goes a long way, its all i use now 🌴🐬

@@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar This is the result of snapper depletion. Snapper eat Kina, one of the few fish able to break open and predate on kina. However for a snapper to be able to do that it has to be of adult age. And few reach that age and particularly so in the north with the amount of fishing that happens. With no adult snapper kina proliferate like rabbits, and eat all the weed off of reefs. These are called Kina barrens, millions of kina going unchecked and eating reefs out of house and home and themselves into starvation as they eat out their own food source, but still keep spawning and breeding. All the fish that rely on seaweed as a whare or food, decimated. Kina barrens are happening all around Aotearoa. I'm in the South Island, you don't see them like up north. There is still a healthy enough balance to keep the kina in check. But eventually the fish stocks here will be wiped out and it will look like up north. Kina are beautiful but left unchecked they fuck up everything by turning seafloors into barren nothing. That reef you're diving on use to have weed and fish life for Africa. Old man and grandparents dived it for decades. It's farked. Take decades to recover.
@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar
@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar 2 года назад
Its so sad how much of the life is gone, it would of looked like a completely different reef a few years ago. There is a study being done down near Leigh that monitors the impact of snapper in controlling Kina population, it would be such a good study to be a part of buts its a bit too far for us. thank you for sharing with us!
@Lyricistnz
@Lyricistnz 2 года назад
@@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar I dive most weekends when the weather lets me. Ecosystems that are intact (a healthy population marine life) you don't see Kina barrens etc. You see far less kina in some places we dive down here in the South Island, way more weed but boy when you come across kina in these intact ecosystems they are BIG and full. I couldn't believe what I saw last time I went for a dive out by the Kerikeri heads when I was last up home. Kina were in the thousands, tiny, skinny and some parts of the reef were bald where once they were teeming with sea weed and fish. And while there was a shit load of fish around they predominantly juvenile and the crays were tiny and few and far between. Over fishing is tantamount to rape
@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar
@TheHighLifeWithSonnyAndChar 2 года назад
@@Lyricistnz yee man the Northland definitely needs a solid pest control plan for the kina.... it's always been on the bucket list to hit the waters up in the south island... I've never been but I'm sure it's beautiful....
