Let me know what you think of this one. Do metroidvanias have to take hours and hours or are you happy for a shorter, more streamlined experience sometimes? Happy gaming. Glen
SwitchUp short is good. I hardly ever complete games these day because they're too difficult and too long. I'll give this one a whirl. BTW, Great content guys, love your work.
95% of platformers these days seem to be metroidvanias. I'm sick of them. So many games look really interesting until I find out they're metroidvanias. I still go on the Nintendo online thing and play mario 3 over and over again because it's so much more linear, and addictive because of that
I always loved the old Metroid games because I did not feel pressured with a lot of missions at once. The games were about having one grand mission and exploring through the rest of the game on your own and learning as you go. This will absolutely be a game that I pick up today and try out for myself because I love most titles that Devolver puts out. Thank you so much for this great review and bringing this title to the light for me Glen!
Three reviews in one day??? Thanks. Keep these Indy reviews coming. I really appreciate all your content. It gets me through my weekly 60 hour grind. Just wish I had more time to play these.
Fantastic review! I’m totally fine with a shorter game and a cheaper price because of it, in favor of a tighter experience. You and SwitchWatch are doing God’s work in reviewing and covering Switch games. Thank you!
Thank you very much. Yeah, we work very hard to get these reviews out and I know the boys at switchwatch do too. It’s always nice to hear that they are appreciated. Glen
i just beat it a few minutes ago and i loved every minute of it! my only gripe was the BGM. for some reason i was expecting some chip tune goodness but was met with atmospheric tones, which is still good for the game. i can't recommend this little game enough :)
It's also definitely is designed in a way that pushes you to replay it to beat your playtime, which is always displayed on the screen when you're in the mech. That meta adds a lot to what you're getting for the money.
I watched the trailer today and it looked really good, kind of bummed they decided to go monochromatic on this one but I need to play it first before I fully judge it. Not that black and white sucks, I just would have loved to seen what this game looked with bright vibrant colors.
Cheers Glen, I always look out for (smaller) games I’m interested in on your channel. It doesn’t come across like a paid advertisement for the game but more like an impartial viewpoint from that of a consumer. Keep up the great work.
I found this on game pass last night, and downloaded without checking reviews first... I played 3 hours straight, played just over an hour this morning to complete it. It’s great 🙂
@@SwitchUpYt Shannon is probably not going to be happy with me adding to my backlog but there's a couple in this Devolver sale I just can't pass up, including this one!
SwitchUp ya I just bought it. I have way too many games now. But I’m really glad it’s a more streamlined Metriodvania and I can actually finish it lol. Keep up the good work bro!
An amazing game. I'm completely fine with a shorter experience. Happy to add this one to the wishlist to pick up when the backlog is cleared a bit. Currently massively into FIFA 19 thanks to the discount to 20 euros. Thanks for the review lads!
@@SwitchUpYt That's how I usually do it too! I play a game like Binding of Isaac, Diablo, Smash, or Fifa on the main, and play a shorter game for the story on the side. Great entertainment!
I love my ZX Spectrum (yes it still works and I still play on it and now using a DivMMC Future I can load games from sdcard, so no waiting 3-4 minutes for a game to load. \o/ so cool)
Pre-ordered this once I saw you mention it awhile ago can't wait to get into this later, I'm confident I won't be choking on a furball. Currently enjoying messenger, this will break up the pace while I wait for my backers copy of bloodstained to arrive!!!!
YASSSSSSS another SwitchUpAwesome review. I had know idea wth this game was about and with your review it looks pretty good and interesting. I cat as Samus 🤣 for the Win
Perfect review really great game I don't know why some people didn't like the art of this game make them lay off from it i have every games black and white on switch Jack n Jill DX - Minit - Downwell - Wast of Loathing - and that boxing game xD I don't remember now and now gato Roboto. I love this type of art of there is another. One be free to share it and thanks switch up for great hard work keep it up !!
SwitchUp I am happy we getting a lot of cool games. Been holding off Slay the spire til we get a switch release date then Humble Bundles emailed me that PC version is half off. Got that then saw under E-shop coming soon tab that we getting the switch version on the 6th. Gonna double dip and grab it. Since I got Yugioh off Japanese E-shop and slay the spire finally coming, I only wish Fellseal:Arbiter's mark will get a switch release.
I was having loads of fun with this game until I got to the part right after you get spin jump. You have to do a series of spin jumps with rocket boosts to get over a long pit otherwise you fall down to a lower level and have to go back up and try again. I tried about 50 times over an hour and still was no closer to figuring out exactly what this game was wanting me to do to get over this pit, so I said fuck it. But before that, there was some deceptively challenging and fun bosses. It's too bad they threw in the cryptic spin jump pit because it ended the fun, and the entire game for me. The first hour or so was worth the $5 I paid for this.
It's shit like that that annoys people needlessly. Games can be hard but when frustration and boredom sets that's not a good sign of a well balanced or thought out game.
Yeah, the lack of colors isn't my cup of tea. Sure, it creates interesting visuals, but colors aren't just in games to make the world pretty. They are there to give the player subtle visual informations. And like you said, enemies blend in with the scenery. For some people, it's an "interesting design choice", but for people who loves good gamedesign, this is a huge fail. Also, 6-8 hours is absolutely normal for a Metroidvania. Other big Metroidvanias just add many things for 100% completion and 17 hours worth of content, but it's mostly grinding and replaying on harder difficulties.
6-8 was for close to 100% completion. It’s a short metroidvania for sure. I. Agree with you that artistic style is great but the visuals need to do their job and guide the player first and foremost. Glen
I agree with you that color visuals would have been nice, but too many Metroidvanias look EXACTLY alike because of similar color palettes and generally similar sprites. I feel the black and white graphics works wonderful to make the game stand out. If it was colored, would it have garnered as much attention, who knows? I know BECAUSE it’s black and white and really inexpensive and a quick play through, I’ve never hit a play button on a review so fast. The developers did their job in garnering attention! 😊
@@magusvirga Yeah, it surely draws attention. But I wouldn't agree that too many Metroidvanias look the same, since I have quite a few of them on Steam: "Dust: AET", "Axiom Verge", "Bunny Must Die", "Cave Story", "La Mulana 1&2", "Rabi-Ribi" "Rex Rocket", "Shantae 1-3", "Strider" ,"Unepic", "Valdis Story". Every single one has a different visual feel to it and they really don't look alike.
I like the review but I feel like you're giving a bit too much information about the actual game. These games are usually limited in content and it's a shame to hear and see so much when I watching it to get a quality report before deciding to purchase. Other than that it's a very solid video review.
It’s like a Metroidvania for kids and it actually has a fair price. It feels that I expected much more than there actually is. It’s a good small game with many flaws. I didn’t find any secrets and has no passion to search. Enemies are skippable since there is no point to fight - no loot, no energy restore. The game is pretty linear and I just wanted to rush to the next area/boss. Boss fights are a bit too long - they have 2 or 3 easily remembered patterns and you just have to shoot and survive for few minutes. Music is generic and reminds me of Binding of Isaac and Metroid at the same time. Sounds of shooting and walking in the mech costume are loud and annoying. There are a lot of questionable design choices like when you’re escaping the suit the cat stands on the gun and often this pose blocks a narrow path you were going into. I still do not understand how wall walking works. And... The gun only heats to 100 degrees? Like boiling water?
@@portwain This game isn't design to be overly complicated. If you can't appreciate it then whatever. I've played a lot of Metroidvanias and enjoyed it. If you want a cool Metroidvania with a lot of secrets try Astalon: Tears of the Earth.
@@travv88 I played a lot of Metroidvanias as well. I expained everything in my comment - I expected much more from this game because it was usually reviewed as a good metroidvania. I remember it as a pretty linear and boring game. I don’t think that color palette is a good reward for any secret, it doesn’t make me excited for looking for secrets. It just should appear as an option in the game setting from the start if necessary. Astalon is an amazing game indeed.
@@portwain I enjoyed Gato simply for the exploration. Bosses were kinda annoying. Astalon was far better. I've not seen a new Metroidvania that appeals to me in a while. Do you have any recommendations?
He mentioned a list of games, but didn't mention Metroid 2, the game this game is more alike in it's presentation... Besides it is very awkward to call metroid"vania" to a game that is just plain Metroid. Good review besides that.
Why people use the “MetroidVania” term too much??? For me it’s a mixture between Ally Cat + Tower Toppler, but you young people think that there are two games that influenced on our video games.
The term metroidvania has entered the gaming vocabulary these days whether we like it or not. It’s the quickest and easiest way to describe the gameplay to the masses. Glen
