Excellent review. Really wish they'd get the thicker option going. Agree 100% on the logo on the back. Those are my two big complaints. Everything else about the case is very impressive. Current pricing (end of 2021) being $21 dollars shipped if buying the 2 pack minimum, so prices haven't skyrocketed like some other options.
I know this is an older review, but I think it is well presented! I have been looking at those Gator Guards for a while now and they do look sweet and simplistic. At some point, I will definitely get some. Like you, I currently use Ultra Pro One Touch cases to store and display my comics. I have over 50 of them and they have UV Protection. To stop my comics from sliding around, I use Ultra Pro comic preservers. I'm sure I'll leverage both Gator Guards and Ultra Pros to store and displaying my favorites.
Thank you. Since this review, I am using Gator Guards for all my sketch covers. They have also expanded the line to include more size options. Happy collecting!
Great review, very in depth. These are a good option but the cons are a bit of a turn off for me. I ordered the Ultra Pro which, for this video you didn't mention, is intended to be used with the Ultra Pro comic preservers. It's a special bag & board that fits in the case and prevents any movement. The downside on that is you can't see the back cover, and it's "age" specific in size. I know seeing the back cover is important to some people, and for some books it's nice to see that. But let's be honest for most books it's not really a big deal and if you're hanging them up on the wall you're not going to see the backside anyway. So for me, it's not a deal breaker if you can't see the back. With the Ultra Pro, the ease of getting your books in and out, the added protection of the bag & board inside the case, and the built in hanger are big pluses for me. Thanks for doing this review, very helpful.
Thank you for watching. I currently have several of the Ultra Pro cases hung in my comic room and office at work. For my golden age books, I just put them in raw. The rest of the sizes I swap often and leave them in the regular silver age mylars and boards. I am moving all my sketch covers to Gator Guard cases and using comic mounts to display them on the wall.
*question* that circle, wouldn't it imprint into the book? If so, that's a huge flaw and wouldn't recommend putting a valuable book in one. Defeats the purpose.
i just recently learned of these "slab-it Yourself" cases, thanks for the in depth review showing the high points and the negatives and the comparisons, much appreciated Sir
I think that if they made these for the larger comics (gold, silver, thick, magazine and maybe even tabloid/treasury edition size) than I could see myself getting some of these, I don't really have that many newer comics (post 1984) that are worth enough to consider putting them in a high end protectors. I think also having a wider tipped screwdriver to fit the screw head sized would help to prevent scratching on the screw
Good video . I like the simple aspect of gator gaurd . However you are mistakin on the uv protection. Comic skin has the same uv protection or around the same. And as for hanging them you can always use dish hangers I use those for cgc slabs as well.
You are correct on the UV protection. Thank you for the correction. I prefer the comic mounts over plate hangers. They are not expensive and give a nice uniform look. Thanks.
Great review, I’m going to order some. Like your example, I have signed comics that weren’t witnessed by a third party and I don’t feel like paying a premium for someone to confirm that my signatures are authentic when all I really need is the slabbing. I hope they do make some that can fit thicker books and for magazine sized books.
Nice product and review Bubs. The etched logo on the inside of the case is concerning but overall it looks great. I have some Ultra Pro screw cases, it's similar but don't have color screws. Nice product. Thanks for the review!✌
Good review..I have close to 40 Comic skins and I prefer those..when I display a book I need a banner so someone can look at it and see the info on the book..without any kind of label on the case a total miss for me..also the screws look terrible..but thats just me..enjoy the product and thanks for the review.
It's interesting to me how decided the reactions to the screws have been. Perhaps black would look better for some people. I find so many eyesores on the Comic Skins case. The black rails, the hinges at the top, and the Newton rings certainly take some getting used to. I do have several of them but I hope for a better product to come along. Thanks Mike.
Very interesting product but there’s certainly room for improvement...I would for instance add a mini stand that you could fix together through the bottom screws(front and back)...being able to screw them into a wooden rail on wall would be cool😎
Great vid! Sounds like a product that had good intentions but needs some improvements. Can't wait to see a review regarding someone who's book gets stuck inside due to the screws stripping.
If the screw strips then just drill it out . Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw and slowly drill out the screw . The screw are soft plastic and aluminium .
I didn't know you owned any modern books. lol. when I hold these and feel the sturdy and heavy construction, I'm surprised they are as low priced as they are. For $5 you can use the mylar/clear back/toploader option.
You really covered all angles on this review. Looks like with some minor tweaking that this could be really helpful to us non-grading folks. Do you think a regular 1970’s bronze-age comic would fit fine? Talk to you tonight buddy.👊
@@BUBSWORLD181 Once the Bronze-age size comes out, I might give them a try. But I'm also cheap, so hopefully they'll come down a little in price--doesn't have to be much.
@@TheJacksonRoykirk That sounds like a plan. I am hopeful for more sizes. I'll say though that when I hold these and feel how heavy and solid they are, I can tell they are not cheap to make.
