We sung this at school assembly when I was 10 in NZ. It is such a powerful song. I'm 56 and still remember the tune and words. I sung it to my son who was very impressed.

Same! Since the 8th grade I sang it so many times. For me it is the song of a new beginning after a period filled with hard work and adventures. It is bittersweet listening to it.

The performance of "Gaudeamus Igitur" brought back very fond memories of my family's time in Heidelberg - we spent 6 + years there while I was assigned to Germany in the mid-80s to early 90s, catching any number of performances of "The Student Prince" in that grand courtyard at the beginning of the clip. Indeed, I "lost my heart in Heidelberg."

The first time I heard this was at the movies in “The Student Prince” - the prince was played by Edmund Purdom, the voice belonged to Mario Lanza. I loved it. It is still my favourite version.
