Thanks for sticking with it. An important game franchise that's sadly gone a bit un-noticed in recent years.

Thanks for making such a detailed video on Gauntlet. I've been revisiting legends, I used to play it all the time with my late father at our local arcade.

Really feel like gauntlet paved the way for games like Diablo it's a shame this IP doesnt get the recognition and appraisal it deserves

I agree, I actually saw a comment once on a Gauntet reboot video from someone that Gauntlet ripped Diablo off (how wrong they were). It's why I enjoy making these videos so that gamers can get an idea of gaming history, even if just in a small way. Gauntlet of course took its lead from Dungeons and Dragons but that's another story :-)

I think we had the Tengen Gauntlet original game on the Nes back when I was a kid living in the Chicago area in the mid to late 80's. I remember that game very fondly, it was the first time I played Gauntlet. I used to love those black Tengen cartridges, we had so many of those games, I wish I still owned them but I think I sold most of them back around 2009 when my grandmother died. Growing up in America I never knew the Sega Master System even existed, not until like ten years after the Genesis came out did I even hear about it. I guess we just had Nintendo and stuff, the Genesis was the first Sega console I ever heard of.

Glad you enjoyed it. I'm very much a collector first and foremost and a RU-vidr second. I originally started the channel as a "show and tell" of my collection. I'm on a break with the channel but do plan to be back at some point with some really cool stuff. As far as I know, I have at least one early arcade item from Sega that has never had a youtube video made about it. I hope you enjoy the back catalogue.

So I finally found another gaming series that I can actually sit back, relax, and enjoy. I've seen a lot on "popular" games, but haven't found anyone who decided to put this much time into this game other than the niche group of people who actually played the series in the first place. Thanks man! Subbed and smacked the bell.

Thank you. Yeah, it's easy to get the big view numbers with popular series. Gauntlet has a fan base but most of us are pushing their 40's now :-) Still a great series even if it took a few weird decisions along the way.

After more than a decade of obliviousness this is the video that helped me realize that the MC Chris song "The Tussin" sampled the main theme of this game. All this time I figured the nerdy rapper remixed a classical orchestral piece or something like that.

Both Gauntlet and Paperboy on the Sega Master System prove that good games by Tiertex Design Studios do exist.

4-Player Gauntlet is the best experience for sheer fun...But sub-optimal if you want to get far (at least in the Classic Era) since everyone is constantly losing HP, more players = more monsters, and not much more food. 1 Player Questor is the optimal way to play, but less fun since you miss out on the manic 4-Player experience.

The Tengen/NES version is polished but not overly detailed to the point where it feels a little too cluttered like the Sega version, in my opinion. After all, the game action gets quite insane, at times. But even putting that aside, the Tengen/NES version has one of the greatest 8-bit soundtracks of all time. I can't believe you didn't mention it or play a clip of the music! But yeah, the music puts the NES version WAY above the rest for me.

15:38 Yeah the Sega Master System. I know from back then, that the Sega Master System was stronger with more colors then the NES, but the controllers only had a 4directional "cross" and 2 buttons, for some reason they kept the Pause and Start button on the console itself. Despite it being stronger, few games actually made good use of the Sega Master System, Gauntlet among some of them did.

Gauntlet on the Master System was a great little conversion. It looks and feels very faithful to the original.

after at least 4 years of not playing, I started a game of Gauntlet Legacy Slayer Edition on my ps4 and it didn't take long for some Merlin to join. 2 days in a row. the game still lives! but that was a terrible version, so short and simplistic levels but the variety of 4 unlockable weapon types for each character did at least help

Thanks for your video.I have a few versions of this game.The latest being the arcade 1up.It can be mindless fun but being a quarter muncher it gets a bit stale if one just continually adds credits and plays over 100 levels. That’s the thing though, one can play over and over and just enjoy the romping through dungeons experience.I remember vaguely seeing this in arcades in the day but as a teenager myself I was appealed at the time by asteroids and Galaga in those days and Gauntlet came a little later but now however I have taken interest and can see how in mid 80’s with D&D being popular how people must’ve been amazed by this game.Great video.I look forward to pt 2

Thanks for the comment. I really enjoyed the original. I'm lucky enough to have played on the original 4 player arcade edition when I was young. Then many many hours of Gauntlet 2 on the Commodore Amiga as my main experience. I still enjoy the series today.

Holy crap, the Master System port blew me away from your footage alone! And seems to have ran fast compared to other Master System games too. No wonder they put Gauntlet 4 onto the Genesis. Also, I now know that Atari is to Tengen as Konami is to Ultra Games. Huh.

Xybots started out life as Gauntlet 3D
@Insertdiskgames
@Insertdiskgames 5 лет назад
I read that recently when I was doing research for the series. It's surprising as Xybots ended up looking and feeling very different to anything that was ever released in the Gauntlet series. I'm not sure if it would have been a good move or not if Xybots had kept the fantasy/dungeon theme. It would have been an interesting release.

Wait a minute...you say Guantlet was never about the graphics...I think we will have to agree to disagree. Guantlet's success is dependent on three very important criteria. The first is enemy count. Without a high number of enemies on screen it just isn't Guantlet. The second is having the ability to push those enemy counts at a stable frame rate. You can have thousands of enemies on screen but if the game is chugging then the experience isn't Guantlet. The third is being able to play with at least 2 players simultaneously without the entire experience crashing and burning. Addendum- Here is my question...I don't know about the micros so I will leave them out of this. How did the Nes produce such a good port of Guantlet? I'm almost positive that it nor the Master System used background tiles to achieve good ports of Guantlet.

100% every retro game featured on my channel I own the original physical copy, it's pretty much the only rule I have. For some games I do use emulation to capture the footage as it's the cleanest way to deliver the content. I do record everything myself though :-)
@vgbouncehouse
@vgbouncehouse Год назад
Why did you waste all this time on these lousy ports rather than exploring the various levels? None of them ever present the number of enemies the coin-op has. The only game that approached the arcade’s version in quality was Rainbow Arts’ unlicensed Garrison for the Amiga.
@Insertdiskgames
@Insertdiskgames Год назад
Hi, I tend to focus my channel on collecting and physical media. I've played many of the original Gauntlet series in the arcades. Sadly, I don't own the machines at home. Hopefully one day though :-) This series was more about exploring at least 1 version of each release.
