Oh this is actually not very difficult. What's difficult is the smoothness with which he plays all the groupings together. Otherwise the concept is quite easy to practice.

He is the Albert Einstein of drumming... I swear to god, he is so imformative, and creative... The groove @ 2:45 is insanely awesome, and managed to overlap such a odd number with the pulse of the hi hat... That is the sign of true talent, and awareness of a drummer. I also seen him play live in many videos, and he is very aware of what he plays, and when or what to embellish, when playing,,, I think he is the English version of Benny Greb also :P

That groove is basically the groove from the end of the song "Unsettled" by Gavins solo project with 05ric

Oh yeah ... just that easy. Been playing for 20 years and I'm fairly good but watching Gavin's lessons makes me wanna quit. Jesus dude. "No problem ... just accent 16/145th notes on the end of the quite ghost notes of the 13 count of the 7/8 signature but understand that it's all syncopated for the first half of the measure and then count 35 in your head." Yup. Got it.

not only the best drummer past, present and future but his drums are tuned SO GOOD!!! they actually could be considered tuned instruments, I think he could actually play melodys on them. the tone is so pure and cuts like a knife. I don't play anymore but if I did I would definitely want to play on Sonor drums. I have never heard a kit sound so good as Gavin's, so consistently awesome, those Sonor drums really sing!!!

This video is a very fine example why music theory is very important (also for drummers), because honestly (whether you're skilled enough to do these licks or not) this makes perfect sense. It's 'just' counting and using a bit of math.

I've always thought of them as rock, but there is an undeniable metal side to it. They're one of those bands that don't really fall into typical genres.
@acidrums4
@acidrums4 11 лет назад
Oh, come on. It's true that Gavin puts a lot of technical stuff in his compositions (I recall he said once that King Crimson guys complained about he always try to do very technical stuff even in minimal passages) but it doesn't mean he doesn't have groove. He has, but is like a "baroque groove". Besides of his technique, Gavin is widely recognized by his wide range of dynamics. Playing with no groove at all is like Mike Portnoy, George Kollias, Joey Jordison, Tony Roister Jr. or any of those.
@PotatoeChipz

Yeah I agree. His double bass style is wonderful, he uses triplets and the like really tastefully. A lot of metal drummers use the same boring 16th note patterns. Gavins main gig these days is metal these days though, the prog side of metal mainly.

this odd grouping stuff sounds very complex the first time you approach to it. But is extremely simple...just that we are not exposed to those groupings in pop and rock music. Same goes for jazz, i used to think it was an imposible thing to do, but after knowing some concepts you realize is very doable (at some extent).....just remember that in any odd grouping you have at least one accent followed by two unaccented notes.....group of 3 = TÁ ta ta 5 = TÁ ta TÁ ta ta 7= TÁ ta TÁ ta TÁ ta ta

Will try to listen to the OSI stuff soon hopefully. I've heard of 05Ric. I really like the Circles album. The singing on it however, not everyone is going to like. I agree though, drum parts are amazing, so complicated. I enjoy some of the vocal melodies. I'm pretty open minded to them but as I said before not everyone enjoys 05 Rics singing.

This video makes me feel the need to barf. In a good way. Somehow. Like... I feel it in my diaphragm. All I can do is laugh my ass off in response to how unbelievably amazing Gavin Harrison is, especially with that perfectly seamless double bass. I watch him doing that and it's like I can't even breathe. Tension builds in my stomach instinctively, and my mind doesn't want to accept what my ears are hearing.
@fuzzylogiceire
@fuzzylogiceire 11 лет назад
He's on the last two OSI albums. haven't heard them though. I think it's heavy prog rock. Just look for the albums he did as a session drummer before porcupine tree. Should be on his websites or around the net somewhere :)

It's like a recipe, if you cover something in red pepper and mustard, yeah there will be a lot of flavor, but it doesn't mean it's good. A little bit in the right place is important, the subtlety of his techniques make them stand out more to me. This being said I can't imagine trying to play some of the things he does.

he says 'triplets' but then the text says 'actually two 32nd and a 16th note". these two things are not the same in my opinion (regardless of the fact that both consist of 3 notes). anyway, great video as always

By solo stuff do you mean songs like 19 days and those songs? He has a project with 05ric which is really difficult drum wise. Great musicianship but the vocals aren't that good at all. Good for prog fans though. Beside that he just has a load of session credits on artists albums. There's a funky tune called Always there by incognito I really like. It's on youtube, with a version with just programmed drums and one with gavin on it. Thats the one to listen to.
