@Book Worm That's not true, plenty of Irish people like me hate drunkenness and want nothing to do with drink. It's not funny and it's a terrible stereotype.
They give them the drink in the green room. Hypocrisy. Ronnie was great though. His definition of insanity : A sane response to an insane situation. People are perfectly entitled to go insane living on a planet like this.
This is the esteemed RD Laing, a brilliant Scottish Psychiatrist who penned The Divided Self. He was born in Govanhill were I hail from, and he was a well known as a prickly character, but he isn’t ‘a drunk Late Late Show guest’. Far from it, he was a highly intelligent, intuitive man. It’s good to see the pompous Byrne taken down a peg or two.
He was drunk at the time. If your child's teacher had a brilliant rep and turned up drunk to work would you be so quick to defend them because of all the good work they'd done in their career so far?
The Late Late audience : We look after people we empathise with! Gaybo : but he's under the weather!? Audience : especially when they're under the weather!! ✌️🥴🍻
@@jogiff I know, in no job would it be acceptable to turn up drunk. And I'm no prude, I've done every substance under the sun but ffs you don't turn up to any job be it cleaning toilets, washing dishes or doing open heart surgery drunk. It just isn't on. Gay had every right to be angry, it's his show and it was serious stuff they were discussing. It's no wonder he called the man out. They both had a job to do and for any1 here defending him, if you and a colleague had a job to do together and they turned up pissed out of their heads you'd not like it or find it acceptable or anyway within the boundaries of social norms so quit with the bullocks of defending it and saying it's no problem. I remember going to see a comedian in Dublin around 09, it started off funny but the guy got pissed on stage and the whole mood changed. It was the guy from the panel I think, don't know his name. He became pretty rude and aggressive to people and really it stopped being funny and just became tense. It was like listening to a drunk person in pub. I did think it was pretty unprofessional.
If rules were made to be broken, then unwritten rules were made to be safely ignored. In any case, Laing was probably more coherent drunk than this guy was sober.
Oliver Reed did arrive on the show drunk one night and knocked over another female guest to the floor and then proceeded to get up on top of her and wouldn't get off!
Hardly a genius. He had a degree, took drugs and got elevated by American students for being a hippy psychiatrist. Everything he pioneered went tits up.
This is r.d. Lang the top phycologist of his day . He even tried to treat Sid Barrett when the other members of pink Floyd forced him into Lang's clinic. Lang ended the consolation by asking the band " do you really think Sid has issues or do you (the band) have issues with Sid. Sid Barret lost all interest in the Floyd as soon as the band became popular especially after they appeared on top of the pops.
Things went seriously wrong with Syd unfortunately. A recent in depth interview on RU-vid with his sister talks of how things really stood, and she made no attempt to pretend it was anything but tragic
Byrne is as much a monster creation of the Irish public's indulgence of him at that time as anything. Also, guests at that time were more interesting usually.
Gay Byrne is the most pious man in Ireland probably of all time, he is such a boring predictable fuddy-duddy, the man never did anything exciting in his entire life, imagine being stuck beside him at a party, the stuff of nightmares.
@The O'Neill so much narcissism in your idiotic comment. "The O'Neill" my arse, get a life and try living in the 21st century, you might actually enjoy it.
Second sentence says it all. "The British brought the rules" Nobody invited nor asked them, 800 years ago nor ever. Of course that was going to bring out the rebel in the the lands the were wrongly invading. All to enlarge the Empire, or commnweath as you like to call it. This was the result in every such Country, you amadan !
gay byrne could be such a prim and proper prig on occasions- although Laing did drink, he always spoke in this manner and I doubt he was drunk as byrne suggests.
The amount of interviews I've seen Gay Byrne be an ass on I wouldn't blame his guests for being drunk beforehand. RD Laing is an absolute legend, and even inebriated would have enough wit and coherence to keep up a TV interview like this.
I agree drink and TVs don't work. I remember my granny once threw a TV out the window she thought she saw Keith Moon walking by, but it wasn't him it was Ken Dodd, who she rushed after and tickled him with a lump of four by two. Oh those were the days. 🥴
Laing's speech sounds slightly slurred, but that could just be age. As long as the guy is making sense, which Laing seemed to be doing, why bring it up? Besides, Laing can probably make more good points drunk, (if he was), than most of his guests can make stone sober.
The reality is, he was given the drink in the Green Room, knowing full well he had quite enough of booze, this is a classic stun to boost Tv ratings at a misfortune expense .... shocking really
If I remember correctly, Gay continued to say that the "unwritten rule" was that one did not drink much before going on a live show with strong lights beating down. They caused one to sweat more, and feel the effects of alcohol more quickly. He was speaking of how the guest would not be proud of his appearance in retrospect. In this regard he was likely correct.
Yeah, and live on TV in front of an audience is exactly the place to start dictating to someone. Simple fact is, Byrne was an arrogant prick and didn't like the fact that the man had superior intellect than he.
I would have loved to have seen that 'controversial' incident with Anna Raeburn. I have met Anna Raeburn, and I got the impression that it takes a great deal to try HER patience. Gay Byrne must have really stuck his foot in it.
Gay Bryne was and is a complete plonker, who tormented 1000s of people to drink for years with his crap on the late late show, and he still wont go away. AAAHHHH.
Would be interesting to see the full interview, there was a slightly longer clip shown on Gaybo tribute show after he died. It was clear Laing was so drunk he could barely string two sentences together.
James Furey that's all very well, but this video isn't about any of that, and I'm guessing most people are here for R.D Laing, "so" why raise the subject?
Brendan Behan was on Malcolm Mudgerage BBC in the late 50’s promoting his play “The Quare Fellow” The BBC gave him a bottle of whiskey 🥃 before he came on. Brendan was fairly pissed when he came on. It proved great publicity for his play. The ordinary London working people were delighted. Bus 🚌 drivers shouted greetings to Brendan the following morning. “Saw you on TV last night Brendan” The more class conscious snobs were appalled but Brendan did not mind as it did wonders at the box office. Malcolm Muggerage handled it very well asking Brendan to sing “The Auld Triangle” when he was not coherent with his talk. Brendan said later that Malcolm was pissed as well, and it would appear that this was true. After this Brendan did the same on American TV on the Ed Murrow show with Jackie Gleason. Once again it worked with the ordinary workers but the snobbish “Lace Curtain Irish” were appalled. It was great publicity for his play again with the box office. Incidentally Gay did have Oliver Reid on the Late Late when Oliver was drunk. The clip was never shown again which was a pity and it made great TV. I doubt there is a clip of it anywhere. He brought Oliver back a couple of weeks later when he was sober.
Gay hadnt much luck for the way he treated Annie Murphy how many times has his funds be wiped out since He didnt mind P Flynn been well on it on his show when it suited him either.
He also had an interesting life... very much at the heart of the 60s counter-culture. He lived and worked at Kingsley Hall for a while which had all sorts of interesting goings on... I discovered this week at my aunt's funeral last month (she lived and worked at Kingsley Hall) that she made spaghetti meat-balls for Sean Connery who was being treated by Laing at the height of his Bond fame.
Dont know anything about the Geezer that is Drunk but so what it aint the first time people on Tv have been Twisted . Byrne is a Nancy Boy and sure was a Teachers Pet ,the worst thing he ever did was Read in Bad Light now let him get back to sewin his Knickers
How long ago was that broadcast? Because on the desk it looks like an old style analogue phone that was commonplace in the UK up to the mid 1980’s before push button telephones became the standard.
Byrne was too polite to accuse Laing of being pissed. Now, I know that a lot of Irish people think that RTÉ is bush league, and there's some weight to that argument, but the rule stands. Of you're going to appear on TV or radio, leave the drinking till after.
Yet Old Gay never used the same logic with Oliver Reed or Dunphy because he believed they were on his level. You see old Gay was a condescending cunt when he believed someone was somehow beneath him.
RD Laing …. I would love to hear him at any time. For goodness sake what was he doing appearing on that vacuous platform. I assume that it is still running
..to this --slurred speech guest-- Gaybo gave incredible tolerance -- here in USA --security would be called instantly -- --I long for -dear olde Ireland -
Gay Byrne was spot on here. He did not say the man was not entitled to appear on the programme, he was stating that it not appropriate to do so when you are pissed drunk. And it is not appropriate to do so. All you end up doing is making a fool out of yourself. If you want to get yourself scuttered drunk, do so on your own time, not on the time of licence fee payers
How many times did he interview Dunphy who was never sober an interview? Of course Gay only showed up anyone that he believed was somehow beneath him, the condescending old fart.
i don't know why i bothered tuning into this...but it reminded me: somewhere there's a clip on youtube of Byrne interviewing Tom Waits and Byrne says something like "you're a bit of a lowlife, aren't you?" and Waits goes "I beg your pardon". that was funny.
