Raised in a macho Italian family in Harrison, New Jersey, Chauncey got the sense at a young age that he had to be masculine and anything short of that would be a disappointment. While he did eventually own his gay identity, he left the family home for New York City, where he immersed himself in queer activism and the club scene. In the backdrop of 9/11, however, he further isolated himself from his family and became reliant on crystal meth. Fortunately, positive family news shook him to his senses - inspiring him to walk away from meth and bring his full, authentic self home.

I'm one of 3 sons. I come from an Italian American family. I am siked I will be an uncle next year. My advice to anyone is not to wait around for loved ones to ask about your personal life. Speak Your Truth safely and keep moving forward from there.🌈❤️

I am also one of three sons from an Italian American family. I’m 71 years old now and wish I was brave enough while my parents were alive to speak my truth. But I think they always knew and loved me regardless. My older brother tolerated me (luckily I moved away when I was 19 so I didn’t give a rats ass about him and he died lonely) and younger brother accepted me.

@@richarddamico5639Amico mio! I am 46, Gay, from NY, and I regret telling family. Everything works out the way it's should be. You saw it was unacceptable and saved yourself a real headache. Trust me.The amount of shame I feel and I don't know if I will face certain family again. Apologies for your brother. The main thing is to be happy. State buona! 🙂

What I love about older generations sharing their stories here is that the message I take away is that it is never too late to try to set things right and make the positive difference you want to see in the world. It is people like you that give me hope for a better tomorrow!

I don’t understand why a gay man has to loose years of his life doing life threatening drugs? Living on the edges? Piercing? This doesn’t sound like a man who was at peace with himself?

I didn't lose years of my life. it's all part of the process. we're constantly trying to find peace within ourselves. it's not a permanent space.
