How times have changed! Btw that is me I was the boy in the catholic school. I remember finding the interviewer really condescending. He couldn't get into his head that I was a proud gay 15 year old. My parents insisted my face be blurred to protect me as it was a difficult time and they didn't want things to get any worse. It's so strange hearing these views now so glad the world has moved on :-)

These 'advances' have been hard fought, yet, without a keen vigilance, they can be taken away overnight.

Just over 20 years later some of the content seems absolutely outrageous now. Hard to believe marriage equality came in a scant 15 years later. People wouldn’t have believed it back then, moreover gay people themselves

I want my kids to be taught by their school that same sex relationships and families, even single parent families do exist and should be validated, accepted as normal and to grow up knowing that they are not broken should they be born queer. In fact this doesn't mean they are defective and that they should never tolerate discrimination or bullying from anyone. I want them to be able to see themselves in the media they choose to consume, to be able to get married to whome ever they choose and be subject to exactly the same legal conditions and rights as their straight peers. Their husband, wife, spouse, partner should be recognised legally as such. I want my kids if ever I'm lucky enough to be able to procreate with someone I love to be happy. I do not need the approval of any god to marry whom I choose. I hope to live in a world which continues to make progress toward equality in terms of legal rights, mariage, the raising of children and access to essential resources.

Tony Blair's New Labour Government from 1997 onwards helped the LGBT community.

I find it unbelievable that Labour took bloody 6 years to repel a most horrific piece of legislation in England and Wales. I know they did try to make progress but it is unacceptably cowardly to wait that long to do what was the right thing to do in the first months of their government. I get it from the documentary that people actually did support Thatcher’s hurtful law and I admit such popular support was difficult for a Labour government to overturn overnight, but they could have been a bit braver a bit earlier.

I love the phrase, “the next gay happening”

The U.K. and Ireland moved very rapidly from the late 90s onwards towards modernisation- people are gay and that’s all. Same as they’re straight.

15 years of state supported suppression directed at gay and lesbian and indeed Bi and trans and additional LGBT plus community members (1988- 2003) prevented any progress with legal rights and stunted social acceptance somewhat for LGBTplus people- in marriage, partnerships, and families, children and parenting and education and other aspects of life. Its great that once 2003 came around it propelled same-sex civil partnerships and adoption rights came soon after, then marriage ammoungst many other things. However it's a shame that 18 years on, that the government are only now implicating a policy in schools that allows the promotion of LGBT plus inclusivity through RSE -Relationship and sex education and will be put into affect in schools in September 2020 -primary- secondary schools (in primary school covering the basics of consent with hugs and trust and different sorts of families. Secondary school will move onto consent with sexual relationships. Hopefully this will give teachers the confidence and tools to stamp out homophobia, bi-phobia trans-phobia across ALL schools and help children to rearlize what makes a good friendship and what makes a good partnership and this shall ensure all children shall thrive.
