Michael Perryman and Nick Thorne visit GB Cave, Mendip Hills. The film follows a single caver's journey on a sporting descent of Mendip's tenth longest and tenth deepest cave. The film was completed in August 2023. To our knowledge, it includes the first filming of Disappointment Chamber and Great Chamber. The 21 minute film is followed by a two-minute extract of a recent (August 2023) interview with four of the University of Bristol Speleological Society cavers who made the breakthrough into Bat Passage, and these two impressive chambers, in 1966.

I’ve watched a number of films about caving over the years but have to say that your video of the trip down GB has to be the best at encapsulating the wonders of caving. First class.

As a caver, and having done the trip a few times, I loved the film. I'm impressed with what you have achieved and perhaps a little jealous too. Keith

I’m not a caver but can now see the appeal of caving. I felt like I was there. Brilliant film giving a glimpse into a world I’ve not experienced before. Thank you.

I really enjoyed this video. The camera work, music, lighting, and other effects brought out the beauty, atmosphere and magnificence of these caves. Professor Michael Perryman has created a video that helps non cavers like myself understand what an amazing experience caving can be! Meeting the original 4 cavers was also very interesting.

Amazing film! I was tense all the way through and completely exhausted by the time they returned to the 'real world'! Beautifully captured

I'm not a caver but found the filming by Michael Perryman of Nick navigating himself through intricate tunnels and caverns is exceptional. One can understand the attraction of caving with seeing stalactites and stalagmites that must be hundreds of years old set in enormous galleries & appreciate the skill of the cameraman & lighting. The sound track & editing by Thomas and Richard Perryman add to its professional finish.

This is a fascinating window into the world beneath our feet, that most of us will never see, first hand! It gives a real sense of scale and challenge. Every geographer should watch it and contemplate the processes at work and the beauty they create! THANKS Michael - good job all!

Well lit and interesting soundscape. You might be interested to know that I learnt some years ago that my cousin's father-in-law Frank Glockling helped put the hydrogen balloon up that measured the height of the Main Chamber.

Mike Norton forwarded the link to this film to me-an old Bristol speleo, who remembers with great affection and awe all those trips down GB, with Mike, Pete Standing, Colin High, Eve Wheeler, and others. Good work, Mike Perryman!

How long in actual time was it to go through this cave?

A trip to the sump and back (without filming!) is about 2.5-3 hours. Including Bat Passage and Great Chamber and Disappointment Chamber is perhaps 4-4.5 hours. But finding the way through the boulder choke to reach Great Chamber and Disappointment is not easy!

Excellent film. Would you mind telling us what type of camera you used and what editing software that allowed you to overlay text and survey please?

Mostly taken with the rather inexpensive Olympus (Tough) TG6, with only a few of the clips using the GoPro Hero11. The GoPro gives higher resolution, but at the expense of the low-light level performance (although I may not have found the correct GoPro settings!). I did a first assembly of clips using Mac iMovie (v10.3.8, as bundled with MacOS). Final editing was done with Final Cut Pro. I created all overlays in Affinity Designer (an alternative to the perhaps better known Adobe Illustrator). The "trick" is to create the overlays using (1) a transparent background, (2) exported as png format. The png file (of the text, or survey) can then be added to the clips in iMovie or Final Cut Pro.

Это ж он еще по несколько раз туда-сюда ползал, что бы камеру переставлять.
