Caving as a hobby is different; and it is one of the very few remaining places on earth where you actually have to go there, to find out what's around the next corner. Exploring new passages is a privilege. We do take the appropriate precautions to ensure we come out again - leaving marks, put rigging into place to ensure we can climb back up a drop, etc. As for getting stuck... you learn your limits by carefully pushing them.

Hauling packs costs blood. I had zero - none - clothing change with me, to save weight. Food was adequate, the lightest possible. Personal items, none (small toothbrush + mini toothpaste only). You have to have enough batteries and a repair kit. And toilet paper. But you cut absolutely everything else to the bone.

@@ilikeknafs9563 Plenty of water available most of the time. A creek runs through the camp; and in fact flooded out the (very very basic) campsite that the support team were supposed to use. They had to drop their stuff and just go straight back out.

Caving if done by the guidelines is actually quite safe.

A fair point. That cave is fairly well known to not fill up, so it's more a matter of convenience rather than survival. But drowning is one of the major causes of cave fatalities, so it has to be taken seriously.

I think you lack imagination, and apply an overly narrow definition to what you consider normal. Apart from seeing unique aspects of nature, cave exploration (like anything that's genuinely demanding) gives you insight into your friends and not least yourself. Insight that cannot be gathered by simpler, more comfy ways.

Self-rescue, if at all possible, is THE preferred option. Everything else takes days. So - stabilize, splint, duct-tape, fill up with painkillers and get out. If that is not viable, someone spends a day getting out, calls in via the Iridium, and triggers a big response.

Very rarely. It has happened to me, never while inside the cave, and never really seriously. But then, if I weren't confident of managing it I wouldn't go, and that translates to the subconscious as well (or it's the other way round). Preparation is important, mental at least as much as physical.

Theres still something interesting about exploring a natural structure humans weren't meant for. Some of those enormous drop offs and waterfalls were pretty cool.

@@Soulos-oq7ij I'd still get nervous if my supply bag got snagged or jammed somehow in a crevice, or, worse yet, the bag stayed put and I became jammed instead.... I love the idea of exploring subterranean passages and chambers... I used to go with some friends when I was younger to explore a couple of 'wild' caves near us, but nothing as tight and confining as shown in this video! I'm quite older now, so this type of challenge and strenuous excercise is beyond my physical capabilities! Still, I love watching spelunking videos on this forum! They take me 'into' worlds that I shall never be able to see in person!

It's OK as long as the cave doesn't fill up and trap you. TGC is safe even in times of Biblical rainpour. Castleguard Cave, Canada's longest, can only be explored in winter due to dangerous, sudden flooding.

Drip drip drip at night is about as far as it goes. Though sometimes the dripping is irregular, or a pool suddenly drains somewhere... and you lie there, half asleep in the darkness and wonder what'll happen next 🤔🙄😁

@@NUSKish 😄, fair enough, sounds like you guys need a little buzz down there to keep things interesting when there is down time. If you have time for just two questions, how far is the farthest you've gone down in a cave?, and have you ever panicked being down there?, happy exploring ✌️.

The "Ice Plug" that defines the innermost end of Castleguard Cave in Canada is about 11km and roughly two days travel from the entrance. But there exist caves that are an order of magnitude larger, so I won't brag 😁 As for panic... no, fortunately not. I've seen other people panic, it's not much fun.
