10 days underground - extreme cave exploration

We spent 12 days, including 9 consecutive nights, rigging, exploring and documenting Thanksgiving Cave. Real hard-core caving: long duration, heavy packs, claustrophobic passages, verticals - you name, we did it, day after day after day.
This was a major exploration expedition organized by John Lay, with a separate support team for resupply on day 5. The supporters weathered torrential rain outside, and pervasive wetness inside, to deliver what we needed.

My grandfather was a coal miner back in the day. He had to crawl for miles just to get to the location they would be working on any given day. He didn’t make much, but at least he got paid. I can’t imagine putting oneself thru this fresh hell for free.
@NUSKish
@NUSKish 6 лет назад
Your grandfather was a brave man, with the twin risks of collapse and explosion that are uniquely high in coal mines. I would not go in there. Caving as a hobby is different; and it is one of the very few remaining places on earth where you actually have to go there, to find out what's around the next corner. No satellite, no drone, no nothing... and that is part of the attraction.

@@NUSKish I have a question... There was a thriller/monster movie that came out several years ago called "The Cave"(I think). In the movie they used a hand held radar/mapping gun. Not enough respect in the comments for hauling those packs all that way; them suckers look heavy! Props to you guys. It's funny, the first few videos I watched of people caving really freaked me out. The tight squeezes made me squeamish. But the more I watch, the more I'm enticed to try it out. Obviously, I'd start off with something much, much less challenging, but the idea seems a lot less crazy and more exciting than I initially thought.

Hauling packs costs blood. I had zero - none - clothing change with me, to save weight. Food was adequate, the lightest possible. Personal items, none (small toothbrush + mini toothpaste only). You have to have enough batteries and a repair kit. And toilet paper. But you cut absolutely everything else to the bone.

I love the comments on here. I do have to say, what the cameras don't get across is the FEELING of caving. Its pure isolation. You are so far away from people. Only those with you and who know the cave well enough to get supplies to you can find you. For some people, that's terrifying. But for others, like myself, it's one of the best ways to get AWAY. Some people go to the mountains, and some people go under them. Furthermore, the tight squeezes really aren't that bad. Honestly, if you aren't claustrophobic, it is just a matter of assessing them and getting through them. Nothing to it. Again, this is coming from someone who loves doing this kind of stuff. For some people, there is no fun involved and it just ends up miserable.
@NUSKish

@user-dd4fv6qj8g
@user-dd4fv6qj8g 3 года назад
@Lucas Miller It really depends on the cave. Above all, I have to say; if you are interested in trying out caving, do not go it alone. Going into a cave by yourself is super dangerous, hence the caveat in my earlier comment regarding "those with you." But, that's just the disclaimer I have to say before answering :). As for your body type, how flexible are you? I am just shy of 6' and make my way through the caves in my county with relative ease when wearing the proper gear. I actually lead spelunking tours of a local show cave, and my test for muscular gentlemen is to ask them to extend their arms and reach above their heads. Generally, if you can readily bring your hands together above your head when extended, you should be fully capable of the squeezes in the cave I work at, and I'd love to see you give it a shot! That being said, some of the squeezes showcased in this video were INTENSE. I would definitely qualify this cave as more expert-level, especially considering they were going into unexplored tunnels. I hope that answers your question :) .

What happens if God forbid someone sprains or breaks a bone, how do you call for help and/or get them out?
@NUSKish
@NUSKish 6 лет назад
Self-rescue, if at all possible, is THE preferred option. Everything else takes days. So - stabilize, splint, duct-tape, fill up with painkillers and get out. If that is not viable, someone spends a day getting out, calls in via the Iridium, and triggers a big response.

No large rooms with formations? What would the motivation be for squeezing through claustrophobic rock tunnels, without some visual eye candy somewhere throughout the expedition? Rather pointless, as there's nothing really worth seeing or looking forward to discovering! There's the mystery, of course, seeing what lies concealed within the darkness, but, just endless rocks and tight crawlspaces would discourage me very quickly.

@@Soulos-oq7ij I'd still get nervous if my supply bag got snagged or jammed somehow in a crevice, or, worse yet, the bag stayed put and I became jammed instead.... I used to go with some friends when I was younger to explore a couple of 'wild' caves near us, but nothing as tight and confining as shown in this video! I'm quite older now, so this type of challenge and strenuous excercise is beyond my physical capabilities! Still, I love watching spelunking videos on this forum! They take me 'into' worlds that I shall never be able to see in person!

A single moment of realization of how far into the cave they are would set off such panic. Only certain people can do things like this. I would panic 5 meters in. I need lots of space and the idea of not being able to get out in a very long time would send me into severe panic. Fair play you all of you but you are pure nuts.

Very rarely. It has happened to me, never while inside the cave, and never really seriously. But then, if I weren't confident of managing it I wouldn't go, and that translates to the subconscious as well (or it's the other way round). Preparation is important, mental at least as much as physical.

One of the few redeeming features of a tight cave like this, is that you actually don't need all that much light - there are no wide open spaces. Also, modern cameras have amazing sensitivity (at the cost of dynamic range unfortunately). That said, I burned about 6 AA batteries per day for personal light and cameras; as well as having another six 18650-size 3Ah lithium cells for the "film light", a 600-lumen Lupine Tesla. The AA's were Energizer Ultimate, a single-use lithium battery with about 3Ah in it, and the best I've come across. I used them to drive a USB charger, since everything today is rechargeable. On my first trip to Castleguard Cave in the Rockies in 1994 the budget was 3 D-cells per day, just for personal light. Today is better :-)

NUSKish I was wondering how many batteries you brought. Thanks. Nice work. Much respect
@NUSKish
@NUSKish 6 лет назад
See above - times 10 days + a little margin. One of the reasons I use lots of disposable AA's as the power source is that it's easy to track consumption, rather than having some monster powerbank where it's much harder to know what's inside.
@NUSKish
@NUSKish 6 лет назад
AD ASTRA This trip was very special due to duration and need to save weight. DIsposable AA have 50% more energy and weigh 10g less per cell. I saved 300g this way, same as two freeze-dried meals.
