This game will remain a classic forever. It's weird confusing layout is what makes it so special. For a young gamer today it would be horrible, but for someone who understands old video game design it's extremely fascinating.
I love retro games and I grew up as a child with the colorless Gameboy. This game taught me why the Metroid franchise is so popular, and it is certainly not only because of the sexy female protagonist Samus, as I assumed. The moveset of Samus is amazing, with all the skills you can unlock throughout the game. But yeah, itis annoying that you can get lost so easy in that underground maze of planet SR388. The game is not sectioned in levels, it is one entire map. And there is no map that can be opened in any menu for checking at what location of the map you currently are, if you struggle and walk around in the circle. Some passages look very similiar. I both love and hate this level of difficulty when your orientation and navigating skills are challenged. Anyway, in some way these old games are still better than some modern games in my opinion. Some modern games only got better graphics, but they cannot transport the same feeling and experience like the retro games. And for some video game lovers like me, the old graphics and sounds can be charming.
Interesting you say that, I guess I would be considered a younger gamer for the standards of this game as I grew up in the early 2000s. I don't exactly remember how I ended up with a copy of this game but it ran on my gameboy advance and I remember making no progress for like the first month I tried to play it, eventually the game clicked for me and I started to really enjoy the exploration aspect and finding new weapons throughout the world. It was definitely very different from the games I was used to but even as a younger gamer I was eventually able to appreciate it.
I just beat samus returns on 3ds.... i definitely prefer the remastered version lol. Although i might say that 1st theme song level might still sound better on game boy version.
I think the atmosphere is a consequence of the technical limitations of the GameBoy. I wonder how intentional it was? Either way, it scared the crap out of me at times as a kid but it was still a blast to play.
@@zalden2565 I think it was intentional to some extent, but I think there also might just be something about 8 bit games (or their music, at least) that hits as extra creepier than it was meant to be. Like this game's metroid encounter theme makes my brain go "oh crap it's a metroid kill it kill it kill it" real hard. Or when a battle starts in Final Fantasy 1 I feel a sense of dread, even if it's just a single lowly Imp outside of the starting town, because of the battle theme. The Champion's theme in Pokemon GSC is also super foreboding to me for some reason (maybe because Lance is OP and a cheating butthole, but I digress) and Dark Cave is also a little worrisome. The remake versions of those songs don't give me the same feeling at all (and neither does Samus Returns as a whole for that matter, totally different atmosphere than Return of Samus). And then when a game's TRYING to sound scary, like Sweet Home? Get me the heck out of there lol.
i love both remakes but they absolutely fail to recapture this. AM2R and SR are always so vibrant and colorful when the original Metroid 2 in contrast feels dead, derelict, and increasingly ominous the deeper you descend.
@@JosephQPublic, he could be referring to the fact that the actual character designs in 2 look a lot better then 1 and so the change between the two was obviously gonna be huge just it’s amazing to see the difference
Very impressive how well you know your way around this game! Even though I played through Metroid 2 as a child, I can barely remember any specifics - unlike Super Metroid, my favorite game EVER. Anyway, it was definitely a lot of fun watching you. :)
+Ravenswraith OR get a Visual Boy Advance emulator and get the Metroid II Return of Samus Rom, But of course... There's AM2R (Stands for Another Metroid 2 Remake) [It's basically an entire remake of Metroid 2 which in sort, Improves. Everything.] But still, if you want to support nintendo and have Metroid II on the go, it wouldn't hurt to buy it either (somewhat...)
The first Metroid game I played before I played the 1st and 3rd game. When I was elementary school, I told the boys that Samus is a woman but they didn't believe me. When I got the best ending and showed it to them, they were very pissed and enraged. They were very angry that Samus is woman. I already knew that she was a women before I played this game by reading Nintendo Power. This was the best Metroid game I played and I'll never forget it. Getting the best ending was the most best part of the game.

This was a bit before my time, I was in grade school when the GameBoy Advance and GameCube were out. But even so that was something that was always going around on the playground. “Hey you know that Samus guy from Metroid Prime? He’s actually A SHE.” “What? No way, he looks like a guy!” “No she’s a girl, my brother told me.” “Whoa.”
Same. Soon as the Gamma Metroid phase hit, it freaked me out and I turned off the game. Years later, after I got a bit tougher, I turned the game back on... and those Metroids wished they never crossed me.
A Metroid hiding and instantly attacking you, paired with the “Ta-da!” Sound effect, followed by the music could cause sheer terror in me as a kid. Being low on health and distanced from my last save (and no such thing as a quick save) provides a tangible element that adds to the tension.
When I played it as a kid, I always tried to dive into acid water and forcedly walked as far as possible without knowing that water level would go down after beating metroids in near scope. Still love it.

Played this as a kid , just replayed it as an adult with a map. I can recall thinking to my self as a child there are places on the map where it should have overlapped. Now I know it actually did. The feeling of beating this game is a cherished memory. Finishing this game with no internet or guides , Its hard.

Same. I was freaking out when I first beat it. I even remember where I was. My family and I were chilling at a lake on a hot summer day and I had nothing better to do than playing Metroid 2 in the shade. My dad, totally unimpressed, was like "Great, now turn that droning box off and get your ass in the water ffs!" Must have been 1991 or 92.
Thank you my friend. You can get lost in that tunnel maze so easy. Without your gameplay video I would not have made it. I never played this game as a child, but tried it now via emulator in the age above 30, and I love it. One of the best games for the old Gameboy in my opinion. But the creepy atmosphere in that game, well, it would have been too much for me if I played it as a child. From the Super Smash Bros. franchise I got to know about Metroid, and as I liked to see Zero Suit Samus in the later games, and read about the story of Metroid, I was fascinated to try the Metroid games quite from the beginning. The bikini scene, however, is not that exciting anymore nowadays. You can find pictures of cosplayers in the Zero Suit that look much better than that on the internet. But besides that I try completing this game in under 3 hours anyway.
4:57 It was my first Metroid Game and if you don't play Metroid 1, this quickly becomes unsolvable. I couldn't get any further in the game for many weeks until, out of desperation and trying things out, I found out that you could continue at this point. I still remember today the feeling of joy when my friend and I finally made it further.
Awesome play-through mate, this brings such a good memories playing this game and spending many hours trying to learn all the secret doors and passages. By far my favorite gameboy game and one of my all time favorites 👊
I always liked the little delay in this game when you fire a missile. It's like it launches out and then its thrust activates. I always thought it was really cool.

Got the Gameboy as a Christmas present in the 90s with this game and legend of Zelda link to the past. I just watched what took me as a kid and probably hundreds of dollars worth of batteries and around a year and a half to finish... beat it in an hour😂
This, Link's Awakening, and Super Mario Land 2 were my first GB games, and they were all great. I didn't know about the two ceiling tanks, and the item collection route on the area with the Varia is much more efficient than what I've been doing. I estimate this will shave four minutes off my best time, which is 1:25.
I played that as a child. I endet up getting lost in that caverns pretty much at the beginning. Love it. Ehen i heard prime 4 is going to happen, i started to replay every metroid game. Guess what. I'm stuck again in that damn caverns
Question: Does the varia/barrier suit affect how fast the jump and fall are? I didn't notice much of a difference and the jumps are kinda slow in this game.
Wish Nintendo could officially remake Metroid 2: Return of Samus. But what kind of remake 2D like Metroid, Zero Mission, Super Metroid and Fusion or 3D like the Prime trilogy and for what console 3DS or Nintendo Switch?

Since Nintendo LOVES doing remakes, do you guys wish for an enhanced remake of this just like Metroid Zero Mission? My first Metroid game was Metroid for the NES but I couldn't get into it. Places just look the same and I never beaten it. I gave up...until Metroid Zero Mission came along. (Super Metroid is STILL my favorite Metroid game so far.) I never played this game (and I won't since it reminds me of Metroid for NES...unless a remake comes for this.) I applaud the people who beat this though. Nice work. EDIT: It's HAPPENING! An Official remake will be here this year (September 2017)! I'm SO~ HAPPY! Automatic buy for me! Like Metroid I to Zero Mission, I can finally play Metroid II's storyline!
saylsen I meant officially from Nintendo. I already saw a demo playthrough of that. It is nice but fan games / fan hacks really depend on motivation. Not many become "finished". Few fan-games I loved are finished but others are dropped.
AZD ANS Sorry to reply to a month old comment, but the motivation behind AM2R is indeed there. The developer updates the blog frequently and always has something new to share. He's also fairly well into finishing it. Although I do agree, some of my favorite fan made metroid projects have been dropped long ago, but I'm fairly certain AM2R will see completion

I bought this game on 3DS awhile back when it first released on the eShop. I'm a huge fan of the series, but I've never been able to get into Metroid or Metroid II. I've played Zero Mission a bunch, but I guess I'm wondering how to get into the mindset of someone playing these classics for the first time, with their controls and feel. Also, how do you play the game in color?
I beat the game, and I now see why you waited to get the Beam upgrades. Really nice walkthrough, and I came surprisingly close to getting the bonus ending. That last boss was a serious workout. I had to find the nearest missile refill just to defeat Queen Metroid. I was only able to bomb her stomach once before I decided to just finish her off with missiles.
This game is much more satisfying then the first Metroid game! The best part is when you run to the ship together with the baby Metroid!!! And the saddest part is that the Baby did get killed by mother brain!!!
As a kid I played 100% through this game when we spend holiday in Austria in 1989 :) ! It has a very genius, tight atmosphere, music is brilliant, sometimes minimalistic in the later 'alien' levels but exactly to the point (great job by the developers) ! Soundeffects are great too, very scary, remember that soundeffects, when you hit the 'evil' bosses, even the enemies look unusual, very unique. So as a whole a great game ! -I think some tracks sound better on a original Game Boy btw. .
