What's the faster way to get to Boston from Worcester: driving or taking the commuter rail? Two GBH reporters raced from Worcester's Union Station to Boston's South Station to find out. They joined Crystal Haynes to talk about their experiment and what it signals about the state of transportation in Massachusetts.

The car had $7.50 parking in Boston. My office parking garage charges $23 in downtown. They also left very early at 6AM. Try this race at 7AM or 8AM or from Boston at 5PM.

Yeah, same here, its $145 per month for me, or $7.25 per day, but I only go the office 3 days a week, making it $12 each time I parked. They also neglected to add in car insurance, 1/2 of my time spent driving was for going to work, I paid $250 a month. Ignoring gas, by taking the train I saved $70 on insurance by driving less, and $145 by not parking, that $215 a month or 2580 per year. Having cheaper options for people is essential, it increases the wealth of the communities it serves and allows them to thrive. Good transit options also increase time available to people, especially commuter rail, it allowed me time to work and be productive rather than spend time in my car. More productive employees and more cash in their wallets helps the economy, but most importantly it helps people enjoy themselves more creating a more vibrant community. When I lived there I found that Boston is a fantastic city, I really hope they pursue this idea!

@@arevolvingdoor3836 I'll ride my e-bike 25 miles each way when the weather is good. It takes about 2 hours each way but it's a fun ride, a workout (if I want) and saves me $25+ each time. The minuteman rail trail is really great in the autumn. I'll see the leaves change, sunrises, sunsets, wildlife in the woods and it's quiet

Horribly researched reporting. I traveled the Worcester to Boston commuter route for three months via car. It always took more than two hours each direction and their stated figures don't include the astronomical cost of parking. It cost me more than $1000 a month just to commute to work. The commute alone was draining my savings. I also traveled via train for three years… it took longer (at least 2 1/2 hours each direction), cost more than $500 a month (because you have to pay to park at a train station too), and I was barely breaking even due to commuter costs. Whether by car or by train, your finances and your free time are consumed by the commute. Road rage is dangerous and terrifying. The trains are never cleaned so are disgustingly dirty and they pack you in, often with broken heat or broken AC. There was an express train. The timing was so bad, most riders’ employers demanded they be at work before the train even left Worcester. With breakdowns, accidents, and overwhelming numbers of commuters, by car by train, the average commute is over 5 1/2 hours a day and you're well above $500 a month.

As you mentioned....the expense of parking in Boston is outrageous. Luckily I worked near South Station so didn't need to take additional subways or busses.

Do you use commuter rail pass?
@pcthayer
@pcthayer 17 дней назад
@@maroon9273 I'm retired now. For a time I did buy the monthly pass and then did the 12 ride punch card (which I don't even know if they have now) when I was able to work remotely at a different site some days. (The punch card worked out even better since somedays they didn't come around to punch it, so you got that ride for free.)

Not just the cost of parking but the cost of owning, insuring, and maintaining a car are totally ignored.
@pcthayer
@pcthayer 17 дней назад
@@colerainey-slavick I admit that, but those numbers are so varied depending on the model car and driving record (for insurance rates) it would be difficult to come up with an actual number that would be valid. (All they could do is perhaps come up with the per mile allowance that could be deducted if you were a business like $0.625 per mile.)

We need to challenge our politicians to commute at their expense by MBTA to and from the statehouse for half the legislative session so they can understand the problems of the commuters.
@spcivitillo
@spcivitillo 18 дней назад
The cost of a trip by car is NOT only associated with the cost of fuel. Car payment, car insurance, maintenance. This video does not tell the whole story.
@colerainey-slavick
@colerainey-slavick 17 дней назад
Exactly, and it ignores that monthly passes dramatically reduce the per ride cost of commuter rail.

I'll love for all of the commuter rail lines to connection to subway/trolley lines instead of going to north and south station all of the time.

I didn't have a car when they reopened Union Station. It seemed great that there would be more access to Boston. It never occurred to me that it would devastate the city by causing so many Boston people and Biotech people to move here and "price out" everyone that really lived here. It's not just that rents and home prices have tripled, there simply isn't room, and contractors are taking advantage every way they can.
@josephteller9715

It was once possible to take commuter services from Boston all the way to Philly and NYC and Portland Maine by Trolly and rail services in this state numerous times a day. In the 1950s and early 60s we lost all that and the obsession with automobiles took over as part of the reaction to the Eisenhower Interstate system. Politicians and money overrode the needs of the public.

You forgot the cost of parking

Now do it when there is traffic and the car trip takes twice as long and the train is the same.

Why don't we just add bike Lanes?

Yet again you completely ignore the costs of owning and maintaining a car, and you also ignore monthly passes reduce the individual fare per ride considerably on commuter rail. This is not an apples to apples comparison.

Commuter rail in the Boston area is a joke - that is a friendly description. The tracks are old and rumbly allowing slow speeds only. Then we are riding in old, stinky, noisy, rumbly and inefficient diesel engines instead of having this thing electrified. Why are the trains super super heavy, instead of light-weight trains that can accelerate and stop faster, are quieter and have less impact on the neighborhoods they rumble through. Oh, yes, we still have rail-crossings on the streets. And that all for service that is usually unreliable (include connections in your calculations) and quite expensive. Do we need money for it? Sure. Why not charging I93, RT3 and RT24 riders from NH and RI, they do the same to us from Massachusetts. Allow ticket-by-camera processes for speeding, red lights, parking on buslanes etc. and use the ticket money to transform our public transport systems.

If you connect a train line between Boston and Springfield it would be like a 3 hour train ride one way, train tickets prices would be insane, and the cost of living out there might go up!!!
