Act two will then draw to a close in Abruzzo on stage 9, where a gruelling day in the Apennines awaits. 5,015m of climbing makes this stage, on paper, the second-most mountainous of this year’s race and one that’s almost guaranteed to see the GC battle ignite. Three categorised climbs in the opening 40km will cause some grief, but it’s the Cat-1 Passo Lanciano and Cat-1 Blockhaus in the final 50km which will rip the race apart.

I probably saw a different stage, maybe and of course because I'm Portuguese, but this summary doesn't quite show the epic battle that Almeida fought to keep that second group in the fight for the stage. In fact, no one helped him closing the gap for several times, and then, when going for the line of course the "non working guys" were freshers than him. Anyway, nothing strange, we are quite used to this, but we know we have a potential winner for this Giro! And he even said he wasn't on a good day! 🙃 #BotaLume

Had he not crashed at the Tour in 2020, he could have finished in a nice GC position. Furthermore his nice final week last year, added to his great form this season until Blockhaus, makes Bardet a credible and legitimate favourite for this Giro. Bardet also is the only GC contender to have properly won a stage race before the Giro : the Tour of the Alps. This should mean he is on form. Meanwhile, Bardet has really changed since his transfer to DSM, and unless any incident he cannot control affects him, we can absolutely count on him to fight for the Maglia Rosa.

First mountain finish. Stage 9 of 21. This is why 3 week tours need a change.

The Etna stage didn't happen? Also stage 7 was a somewhat mountain stage. Not that bad after all I'd say.
