It's not exactly a gourmet meal but it will certainly suffice after a long day in the saddle. In a quick meal like this, you are looking to replenish your carbohydrate stores and ideally put some protein into your body so that your muscles can recover.
Have you been bikepacking before? What sort of meals did you cook? Let us know in the comments. 👇

Global Cycling Network not for bike packing but I was camping with friends once and we made steak and eggs over an improvised fire. One of my best meals ever haha

Rice with squirrel meat and wild greens the only bit I brought with me was the rice and a small baggie of seasonings (salt,pepper,oregano,sage and marjoram). I collected the greens along the way and killed the squirrel with a throwing stick at the camp site. Best bikepacking meal I ever had now camping meals.... Well that's a whole other story.

Got lost once and rode for 11 hours hoping that at the end of the day to get to a certain camping place. It didn't happen and because I was wrecked and there was a storm coming, I set my tent in a very quiet nice place near a graveyard. Had the best canned fish in the history of men kind :))) then, in the morning, I tried to make coffee at a candle light, but I couldn't get the water to boil. So I swallowed two tea spoons of ground coffee and drank the water :))) not very satisfying ;)

Shelled barley with tinned green beans (throw in the water that's in the beans), sliced chorizo and kabanossa, added to the barley, followed with wild strawberries for dessert.

If you throw the rice in at the same time as the water you cut the cooking time way down and save yourself some fuel.. or even soak the rice for half an hour in the cold water too.. it’ll soak up some water and take even less time

Eating rice in the country of couscous? 😀 Could you buy something more nutritious at a local market, for instance, hummus or some local veggies? I've always find it good to carry some fat, say a 250ml little bottle of olive oil or coconut oil that you can refill from time to time. And of course peanuts, nuts and olives. And I always carry some turmeric and black pepper for a simple "curry" and as antiinflammatory.

A good tip for you guys! Get your prep done first and only light the stove when ready to avoid wasting gas if your in countries where fuel is sparse. After years of motorbiking camping I always prefer the army type hexamine stove.Tablets and stove are small so pack better than gas canisters.

Hey guys! I'm a tour cyclist myself (fully loaded touring, not fast and light bikepacking) here in the USA. Some other stuff that's good for bikepacking. Quinoa and couscous cooks amazingly fast and is light on fuel consumption. Some brands of instant mashed potatoes need only water and come premixed with cheese. And you can get tuna, salmon and surprisingly chicken in tins and pouches that come in sauces. And always bring Tabasco sauce, it makes anything edible.

Bad idea to pour in half the rice as steam gets in the bag and sets the remaining rice. Also better to use a cut down wooden spoon. Better for the pan and you don't get that scratchy noise. Also remember that water boils at a lower temperature at altitude. Ok for coffee, terrible for tea. In Morocco you do need water purifiers too. While I'm at it, plastic mugs are better than metal for not burning your lips. Last tip: tubes of Tartex if can still get them. Great for flavouring food. Priceless for veggies abroad.

I feel like there needs to be more crossover between bike packers and backpackers. Because dehydrated and freeze dried food is a staple of backing meals these days and I don't seen any reason why they can't also work for bike packing. If you are carrying a stove and a kettle, and only cooking dinner and maybe a breakfast or two, you can easily carry a weeks worth of dinners and more on a bike.
@antiundead
@antiundead 6 лет назад
I find when touring for weeks on the bike, I want real food. The more carbs and protein the better. What sort of freeze-dried backpacking food can do this?
@GregoryVeizades
@GregoryVeizades 6 лет назад
Cormz Zilla Freeze Dried food is not the same as Dehydrated food. The freeze drying process preserves texture and nutritional content while removing all moisture. Backpackers Pantry is typically my brand of choice but Alpine Aire also has some excellent dishes. Freeze Dried food very much turns back into real food when rehydrated. There are basic add water and let sit dishes that are still amazing. Thing beef stroganoff and egg noodles, Pad Thai, Curries, Mashed Potatoes, and soups. But there are others that add a cooking element with dough mix to make biscuits and gravy for instance. Im on mobile but I'll respond again with some links. But I think another advantage of Freeze Dried foods is the fuel efficiency. Because you don't have to keep the stove on to cook the food most dishes, once the water is boiled to can turn off the stove.
@antiundead
@antiundead 6 лет назад
Interesting, i'm open to new food ideas! I looked into both those brands, they seem great nutritional content. Do you know of any good ones that are Europe/uk based? Shipping from the US isn't the easiest when it comes to food and customs. The one downside i'm noticing though with this type of food is they take a lot of water to rehydrate.
@NHL17
@NHL17 4 года назад
I like to use converted rice when Im camping out, ready quicker, less water, and no rinsing (though I know you didnt rinse it). Also box macaroni with a butter pat and single creamer from the cafe. Can tuna is a nice touch though, like this better than the dehydrated packs that are often pricey and not that yummy.

instant oatmeal, a few bananas, maybe a few apples, bars of all sorts. Mixed nuts, and of course some tea or coffee lol. I could be good with that for a 3 days pretty easily. Once it gets colder here in Minnesota I wanna do a 2 day trip. But I think I'll be better off in a canoe lol.

I really couldn't I get through some calories each day good mix of all 3 carbs fat and protein and if I was backpacking I just couldn't do that on some miniature pouches of porridge and some fruit I wouldn't last very long

what i have learned in the military is that when in the field there is no water spots unless any rivers or ponds are nearby to filter and boil the water but when cooking into a metal container just add the water and food in there a little dust doesnt hurt anything

Cool. Missing a little green stuff but carbs and protein covered. Maybe pack a few spices to liven it up, garlic salt, cumin, etc.

If you need to open a tin without a ring pull and you don't have a tin opener. You can rub the top hard on something like a largs rock, concrete or tarmac. It will wear through the top edge of the tin and you can remove the top. The tip opener is easier and less messy.

Is there are reason for boiling the water first before putting the uncooked rice?

I find it funny that people use gas stoves and such when you almost always have wood, sticks and stuff around to make a bonfire for free.

Fast food is pretty good for bike packing. Cheap and calorie dense. Probably just need to add some fruit / veg for fibre where possible or oats if stuck
