In this video, we look at how to identify metal ions from their precipitates with sodium hydroxide solution.

First of all can I please just say, I cannot describe how much of a help you have been sir. Is there any acronyms to remember these tests and their colours. As a small request, at the end of the videos can you please do some past exam questions to consolidate our knowledge on the topic. If you can do this, it will help so many of us to master the topics.Once again many thanks.

Yup: Copper(II) forms a blue precipitate, iron(II) a green precipitate and iron(III) a brown precipitate.

In the CGP chemistry book for the equations with sodium hydroxides, it doesn't make anything a nitrate so e.g. how you did it: Fe(NO3)3 +3NaOH --> 3NaNO3 + Fe(OH)3 how the book did it: Fe^3+ + 3OH^- --> Fe(OH)3 what do we need to know for the exam?

Are we expected to memorize all of the equations shown in this video? It seems like a lot of work to memorize it all so id like to know if it's necessary, thanks
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 6 лет назад
The exam board says that you should be able to write balanced equations for the reactions to produce insoluble hydroxides. It's possible that they'll ask you for an equation (after seeing paper 1 I would not be surprised). Or you might have to balance one.

Hi sir, Thanks so much for all of your help!! I am just still confused at to why the ions are in the form of nitrates? Do they have to be nitrates? and do we need to be able to write ionic equations for the reactions?
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 4 года назад
We use nitrates because nitrates are always soluble. We are identifying ions in solution, so they must be soluble.

@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 6 лет назад
The spec says that you should be able to write balanced equations for the reactions to produce insoluble hydroxides. However, I don't know whether they'd expect you to know them or simply balance them. If you have time, it's worth learning in my opinion.

well if you understand that this reacts with that then u'll know how to form an equation, just know how to form the compounds into molecular formulas, but if not then its fine to just memorise them i think!

No he said it could be with any soluble compound so not necessarily nitrate but the reaction is the same regardless what compound the metals are in.

how does the copper displace sodium if it sless reactive
@Freesciencelessons
@Freesciencelessons 2 года назад
The copper does not displace the sodium. In sodium hydroxide, both ions (the Na+ and OH- ions) are in solution. The copper ion forms an insoluble compound with the hydroxide ion and precipitates out of solution.
