Flair could have just cut a promo on Atlas, made him look and feel like a jabroni, and left it at that. No, he knew how to push The Hulk's buttons. His job was building Tony up, make him look like he was afraid to get in the ring with him, and build his own heel heat. They both played their parts beautifully. Brilliantly done.
Man, none of the promotions could generate heat like the TBS WCW show in the late 70's to mid 80's. That small but vociferous crowd really put a different dynamic to it.
Tony Atlas was like the George Foreman of pro wrestling. Smiling and polite old-school babyface. Not often you seen him in these types of promos. GCW was the gem of the territories back in the early 80's.
@@gianlukkAlthough it was called "World Championship Wrestling," it was the name of the airtime, until Ted Turner bought it and turned the name into a company. This was still pretty much GCW then.✌🏾😄
There's something more intimate about studio wrestling that I love. I think it makes the talent rely on their actual talent to get over. Wish I could take a time machine back to the 80s.
@@bobdole7292 650 to be exact. He could military press 500. He's why no one came near Brody after Brody was stabbed and the entire island of PR was terrified of him. This dude could toss a hotel refrigerator at someone as if it were a cardboard box..and he did once whn someone tried to rob him.....the fridge stuck in the hotel room door.... He was freakishly strong and also a championship boxer. Tony Atlas was a forreal legit badass in his prime.
@@treeherder2201 Tony Atlas was not a trained championship boxer he was a bodybuilder , Power lifter, look it up, no history of fighting professionally as a boxer.
@@germainejohnson5010 STFU with your BS racist accusations. If Flair were racist, why would he have a scene in which he is slapped by a Black man? You do realize this is setup in advance and Flair agreed to it? Dumbass.
Now that was what you called a sell! Those types of promos that Ric Flair and Tony Atlas displayed would put wrestling fans in the seats for upcoming events back in the day.
Tony's reaction is just priceless, as well as Naitch's promo. Ric was the best at putting himself and his opponents over at the same time while pissing 'em off. 😂😂
tony atlas wrestled all-over and he had a match in one of the local high schools in monroe, nj...he worked out in the high school gym just prior to his match that evening..i was there and have yet to meet a nicer, more humble person then MR. USA...he was a class act and still is to this day...all us kids sat around and watched him train a bit and couldn't believe our eyes as to how big he was and cool he was all at the same time :)
Legend has it Tony Atlas was getting it on with Miss Elizabeth and Randy Savage caught them in the act but Randy did nothing because he was afraid of getting his butt kicked by Atlas.
Gordon Solie was the best broadcaster ever. I can remember going to elementary school and talking about this the whole day and after school too lol lol
Yep, and it was soo much fun !!! People didn't take themselves soo seriously and people could poke fun at themselves!! Things weren't a bed of roses but it was more fun and there was more freedom!!! These woke a-holes don't like anyone !!! This country is in real trouble!!! 😢
@1:31 the fact that flair got away with him calling him boy...could never be done today and yet, that was fantastic. I mean it wasn't ok then, but the fact that he did it to get Atlas (who wasn't all that great on the mic) to get him to look at him with THAT look was classic. It didn't help that instead of stepping up to Flair, he kept backing up made the boy comments even more hilarious. All that was done to build the heat to a Flair v Atlas match and you know what? I want to see the match. Now THAT is how you promo a match!
two things that made me ROFL 1- tony's face when Flair "Said.. look at me boy I'm talking to you" 2- Tony's failed attempt to hit Flair throwing his shirt which hit the ropes
Lol they had such good respect for each other lol.. he slapped flair as soft and gentle as a woman...lol these guys were great.. so glad they are still alive and doing great interviews!...
Please post more, this kind of stuff made me a wrestling fan! Nothing beats classic wrestling, and there's no better then Flair! WOOOO Thanks So much!!
@@tenfourproductionsllc Hogan also called Atlas,"this brown clown". Wow, even back then, Hogan was a racist.

Flair is free to take his white ass back to Scotland or Germany or wherever his folks migrated here from... He always has that option to return home to be with his peoples. Atlas is Indigenous to this land.

@Lewis 970 Let me analyze your statement. It's not a fair comparison because "Africa is a continent comprised of many countries but Germany is just one country in the Continent of Europe"? You just made me dizzy in thought..

@Lewis 970 Dude, there are Negroid people (dark skin/woolly hair) all over this planet that are not African...For instance Vanuatu, Fiji. The Solomon Islands, Melanesia, Guatemala, South Carolina, Georgia, Massachusetts, Mexico, Chile, Hawaii, etc.etc.etc. Are you going to attribute our presence globally to European warfare, when these people's presence in these places go back , some 30,000 years and further? Also Europe is *NOT* a continent. It is actually the Subcontinent of EURASIA, which includes China and Russia...The separation of Europe and Asia is merely a false social construct....Due to false media propaganda, most people are tricked into believing that the recessive Caucasian species of human beast is the global majority when the truth is that this mutated being is only 9% of the total global population....The red headed stepchild of the planet and quickly losing the ability to reproduce...
I actually saw Ric flair and Tony Atlas wrestle at the Base gym at Seymour Johnson AFB must of been 79 or 80.I got to shake Tony Atlas's hand and he has some mits for hands.
Ric Flair was truly one of the best ever in pro wrestling history when selling his heel promos. He was so good at generating heat with the fans and he was so good st making u hate him and his egotistic character. Loved Tony Atlas as well. Good ol days of rasslin!
Good old days I miss those classic wrestling moments where the Challenger and the chapel barking at each other you hear the people in the crowd cheering and Gordon Solie is right in the middle what a great feeling it was back in the day
I love the "fake mad as hell" overacting by Atlas, the bulging eyes, the clenched fists. LOL. But Thunderbolt Patterson was the master of the "Fake Mad" because he would add that element into his talking.... He would splutter and stammer and try to put sentences together, but he was SO MAD, the words just wouldn't come out.
Flair was *the best* for pushing buttons to get people in front of their tv sets and into arena seats. This is just another demonstration of him getting the crowd frenzied and getting Tony Atlas over. And it worked. I loved Tony Atlas and I wanted him to ring ole Ric's bell!
Ric Flair was indeed one of the best wrestlers to ever step into the squared circle but one punch from Tony Atlas and Ric Flair is flat on his back out cold and dreaming of running through a field of daisies.
Dirk Digger ahh no i can't bossa can ya read it to me boss please boss read it to me boss so as i can understand what ya are saying to me boss. LMFAO!!!!!!
Classic promos! Even in the act, you can see the respect both men had for each other! If a white guy even think about calling a black guy a boy today the show would've been cancelled! Sad day we live in, and I'm black btw!
Flair made the right play here not getting in the ring. Goes along with him saying no one puts him in a match he doesn’t want to be in. Plus, none of the horsemen were around to have his back
Atlas clearly skipped leg day.....but his upper body was on point. Hell, one can argue that his future tag-team partner Rocky Johnson had the overall better physique
