GDANSK: THE RANDOM TRAM GAME - throw the dice and that determines which tram route to explore

In theory the idea was simple. Throw two dice, and the number would correspond with a tram route. I was in Gdansk, and the lucky number was 8. I visited the end of the line at Jelitkowo which ended up being a lovely seaside resort. I then caught the tram to the other end of the line, to the slightly gritty town of Stogi and the wide sandy beach of Stogi Plaza. This was my first time at this travel experiment, and it was definitely a success.

As Gdańsk's my home city, it's interesting to watch someone explore the places that are so well-known for me in a random and slightly clueless fashion. And 8 is even the line I use on a regular basis! :D

"Stogi" is the plural of "stóg", meaning a pile of hay or unthreshed grain (a haystack). Jelitkowo probably from the old knightly coat of arms Jelita (intestines), like Alexandria from Alexander the Great. Jelita, three cross spears in a field of red bears. A family born in Poland. From it, a brave soldier, Florian Szary, in the battle for King Władysław I Łokietek (an elbow - he was low) near Płowce was pierced in the stomach (his intestines came out) when he bravely fought with the Teutonic Knights, and the next day he was lying and healing his wounds when he noticed king him, then he was taken and cured by his order, and then he and his family were given another name, Jelita.

i have to admit, it's so cozy to watch someone exploring the city i've been living my entire life, it just really makes me smile and seeing how big excitement you have for travelling by tram (as well as i dislike it after going by it every day to school) and for visiting the beaches i've been on many times before.. gosh, this video is full of happiness for me, i swear

I must say it is a great idea this random tram game of yours. :) I like trams,..., sadly in my country (Slovenia) there are not trams anymore. Trams that operated in Ljubljana were stopped way back (in 1958) and the tram lines were dismantled. There was a tram line also conecting town of Piran with railway station in Portorož but was also removed (together with narrow gauge railway from Trieste to Poreč). Anyway I like your videos and hope one day you will visit Slovenia too. Take care.

I like your idea and I'm glad you liked Gdańsk! Here's one thing to consider though: When using 2 dice like this, the probability of outcomes is not equal. 2 and 12 are least probable (only one way that could happen), 7 is most probable (six ways that could happen), 6 and 8 are tied for second most probable (five ways that could happen). You could use a single dice and then a coin flip to decide whether to add 6 to the dice.

I got this recommended to me. Its fun to see my home city from the perspective of a tourist/traveller It is common in Gdańsk for the tram lines to end near the sea. You need to have in mind the different numered routes are arranged to cover a big area of the city. Since gdańsk is pretty thin and long many of them run on the same route most of the course with minor changes :D

Fun fact - Stogi is considered one of the most dangerous parts of Gdańsk. I'm from Gdańsk and we used to say Stogi is a separate city, that was run by Tygrys (tiger), an ex-gangster whose gone crazy after his son's death. It's easy to get mugged there due to high drug usage among the youngs who migrate to that part of the city because of lower living cost then center or Przymorze for example.

Well, Scottie, route 8 was a lucky dip situation. You sucked me right in, and I wasn't disappointed. At each end of the tramline was a quite respectable beach environment. My wife likes Nutella, from her early days in Italy. But to have it dripping from your tucker aint my cuppa tea at all. Those Polish crows aren't anything like the crows here in Australia, as you would know. But when I was in Scotland the gulls were massive compared to Aussie gulls. Almost as big as emus mate. Looking forward to more of your Polish capers. Keep it up Scottie!

Ahh you ended up on the beach to beach line (I kind of wish you ended up on something going through Opera Bałtycka though, I would have loved a reaction to the singing stop announcement 😁)! Stogi is my favourite beach in the city, the sand goes way further than anywhere else, seems so much more spacious. I feel tempted to do this one day and take my sketchbook with me, whichever end of line the dice and trams take me to ;) By the way, your map might have been outdated, they got rid of line 11 quite some time ago and the end stops of some lines change every now and then, especially 8 and 9.

Lmao, great idea and vid; and I agree, many councils around the world could learn from putting more bins around!! You theoritically could do something similar here in Rio, but you'd only need a 1d4, I think theres 3 light rail lines (bus station - ferries/local airport) the centre is much more interesting. I'm not sure about the tram itself, only one line (perhaps a second, longer, route?) up into a hilly, Bohemian area. Metro only has 2 (and an extension to one, which they called number 4?!?!?). There are four train lines, but they all go to the suburbs and sleeper towns. There really is nothing interesting reached by rail, just people's housing! 😑

2 dice still have the problem of strongly favoring numbers closer to the center of the range, especially 7. This is noticable when you make a table of 6x6, with rolls from first die correspinding to rows and the second one - columns. You'll then notice that in the 36 possible combinations si of them are 7, there are five 6s and 8s, and four 5s and 9s and so on, so overall there was a much larger chance to land on 8 than, for example, 12. You can also test it by well, rolling the pair of dice and counting how often the results turn up.

Jelitkowo you should pronounce Ielitkovo. "j" is pronounced like "i". Stogi means "stacks" like haystacks. Probably there were fields some time ago.
