Many people abroad do not know the history of this city at all. It once belonged to Poland, then to Prussia, or to Germany, later it was a so-called free city, and then from 1945 it belonged to Poland again. For a thousand years it has been a product of the civilizing achievements of both ethnic groups. After the Second World War, however, most Germans were expelled, while the ethnic group of Polish-speaking Kashubians remained here. This means that the city was not, as is claimed, empty after the war, because between 25% and 30% of the old population remained in their homeland in Danzig/Gdansk, especially if you include the area surrounding the city, which has always been almost exclusively Kashubian. This is the reason why so much of the old city of Danzig/Gdansk is still alive today. But Poland alone rose this city from the ruins of the war, and it placed great emphasis on restoring it to its former glory. This is particularly evident today. A lot of things have not yet been built, but efforts are being made to ensure that they do. Before the war, for example, the buildings here were very closely spaced and there have never been as many green spaces in the city as there are today. The distances between the houses were also often relatively close back then, so after the war a lot of things were not built up, but you don't notice that anymore. Today, Danzig/Gdansk is reminiscent of a big city in the Netherlands, but that is no coincidence either, because a lot of traders from that country used to live here and invest their money in infrastructure such as new houses or palaces, because this city had almost always become incredibly rich through trade. It is something that you can see in the city today, and this Polish city wants to reconnect with those old times, which it is increasingly succeeding in doing in our time.
Viele Menschen im Ausland, damit ist aber zuerst einmal Deutschland gemeint, kennen die Geschichte dieser Stadt gar nicht. Sie gehörte einmal zu Polen, dann zu Preußen, oder zu Deutschland, später war sie eine so genannte Freie Stadt und dann ab 1945 gehört sie wieder zu Polen. Sie ist seit Tausend Jahren ein Produkt der zivilisatorischen Leistung beider Ethnien. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden die meisten Deutschen aber vertrieben, was aber viele nicht wissen, die ethnische Gruppe der polnischsprachigen Kaschuben ist hier geblieben. Das bedeutet, dass nicht so wie es behauptet wird, die Stadt nach dem Krieg ziemlich leer war, denn zwischen 25% bis 30% der alten Bevölkerung ist in Danzig/Gdansk in ihrer Heimat verblieben, vor allem wenn man die Umgebung dieser Stadt mitrechnet, denn diese war schon immer fast nur slawisch kaschubisch und diese Ethnie wurde nie oder fast nie in einer eigenen Rubrik erfasst. Die Deutschen rechneten die Kaschuben zu den Deutschen und Polen zu den Polen. Das ist der Grund dafür, warum so viel von der alten Stadt Danzig/Gdansk auch heute noch lebendig ist. Aus den Ruinen des Krieges hat aber diese Stadt Polen allein gehoben, sie war fast zur Gänze durch die Kriegshandlungen der Wehrmacht und die der roten Armee zerstört, und Polen hat immer sehr viel Gewicht darauf gelegt, dass sie ihren alten Glanz wieder bekommt. Das sieht man auch heute besonders deutlich. Vieles hat man aber bis heute noch nicht aufgebaut, aber man bemüht sich darum, dass das passiert. Vor dem Krieg war zum Beispiel die Bebauung hier sehr eng und es hat niemals so viele grüne Flächen in der Stadt gegeben so wie heute. Auch die Abstände zwischen den Häusern waren damals oft relativ eng, nach dem Krieg hat man daher vieles nicht mehr aufgebaut, um viel Platz zwischen den Häuserzeilen zu schaffen, aber das merkt man heute sowieso nicht mehr. Heute erinnert Danzig/Gdansk sogar sehr an eine Großstadt in den Niederlanden, aber auch das ist kein Zufall, weil hier früher einmal sehr viele Händler aus diesem Land gelebt haben, die ihr Geld in die Infrastruktur wie die neuen Häuser oder Paläste investiert haben, denn diese Stadt war fast immer durch den Handel vor allem unglaublich reich geworden. Es ist etwas, was man der Stadt heute auch anmerkt und an diese alten Zeiten will diese polnische Stadt wieder anknüpfen, was ihr auch immer mehr in unserer Zeit auch gelingt. Daher darf man hier nur sagen, Gratulation und nur weiter so!

He is not popular because he is accused of secret collaboration with the communist regime between 1969 and 1989. There is supposedly evidence for this, but he does not want to admit it. But for most Poles, this evidence is so convincing that his reputation is completely ruined.
