GE Broken Microwave Door Latch Spring Quick Fix

Quick DIY to fix a broken microwave door latch spring.
This video will help you quickly fix your microwave (almost all the brands work the same way). The problem is when the door latch stops working and the microwave light stays on once you close the door, and it doesn't turn on. It usually happens when the spring breaks off from the latch.

This video made a simple repair easier than I thought. I didn’t have to drill the hole. I only had to re attach the spring to the appropriate hooks. My wife has a tendency to slam the door shut and that’s what I believed caused the spring to detach. Thank you for posting this vid.

You just saved me $150 and rescued my week flying solo with the kids while my wife is out of town. Brilliant. Thank you so much! Turns out it was the hook on the end of the spring that broke for mine, but I just used needle nose pliers to bend a new hook on the existing spring. Didn't even have to drill anything!

My wife was screaming calling my name, I thought the kitchen was on fire, when I got down to the kitchen she told me the microwave wasn't working, it was like the world was ending for her or something LOL My spring was broken but I was able to bend it with a pair or small pliers and I was able to use it again. It is tighter than normal because the spring is working a little harder but I will be able to use my microwave until the replacement part arrives. Thank you so much.

The latch has two very delicate hooks on each end. One broke super easy taking the old one out. What a blessing. That encouraged me to disassemble the inside of the door first. If you're lucky, you won't break your new latch, or spring for that matter!

I have a GE profile microwave and the bottom hook on the latch broke off. That plastic bottom hook is the thing responsible for triggering the door latch sensor when the latch enters the latch hole. GE no longer makes the plastic latch I need to replace. What did you do to fix yours?

Thanks to you and also the person who suggested the zip tie. In my my microwave, it was not where the spring attached to the handle, but where the spring attached to the inside of the door. The zip tie did the trick. Thank you both

Brilliant! My GE microwave was only 4 months old when the latch went. I fixed it myself. I found a corkscrew helpful in fishing the spring out of the bottom ofthe latch assembly where it had gotten wedged. Thank you Mr. Kahn.

You got me on the right track. Turns out the plastic dohicky on the door side broke, not the piece on the door latch. Instead of buying a new door, I drilled a hole around the same area and placed a screw through the door, capturing the bottom of the spring. Done.

Thank you so much for helping us fix our microwave! It took five minutes! We removed the cover just on the side by the door handle (we used a plastic butter knife) and we saw that one side of the spring was not attached to anything anymore. (Also, a small piece of white plastic fell out) . I wasn't sure where the plastic thing that the spring attaches to would go or how to attach it, so I just hooked the other end of the spring onto a metal part of the door where it looked like it would have enough tension to hold the door closed. Then we tried it and the light stayed on when we closed the door so we thought that the repair didn't work. But we checked and saw we hadn't got the plastic cover securely fitted onto the door. After we put it on properly by pushing firmly around the edges, we found it worked perfectly. The door stays shut tight and the light goes off when the microwave isn't running. I am soooooo happy! Thanks a million, Rezaul Khan! :-)

I didn't need any tools other than the butter knife so that was an extra bonus.

Thank you!! My lower plastic peace broke where the spring hooks on. I drilled at the same height at the end of the door thru the plastic peace and into the metal that the latch slides against. Then bent the bottom of the spring just a little, so it will hook in. Slip the top of the spring on the latch and then lifted the latch into place.

This was exactly what I needed to see. I received a message from my BnB Guest that the microwave stopped working today. So your video gave me the exact information I needed and it took me about 20 minutes to fix it because I had to unplug it and take it to my work area. I am 65 years old and disabled but I was able to follow your instructions and save myself the cost of a new microwave. FYI I used a zip tie and put it around the bottom of the bracket and then hooked the spring onto that. Great video and right to the point.

Thanks for the great video! It gave me just one he info I needed to remove that plastic frame. In my case, the spring broke the attachment on the door frame. I fixed I using both h super glue but also cutting a piece of metal electric prong (one of the two prongs that insert into electrical outlets) and used that fir its existing whole to reinforce the broken plastics frame. I used a Dremel to cut the metal piece. Perfect fit.

You just saved me a likely $150 service call. thanks. (but my one flange had completely broken...so I needed a whole new "Microwave door hook". The part number (with spring) is WB10X10021 (for many Ge microwaves) (I found it on Amazon for $10 from Top Parts in West Hollywood CA ) Rachel - you might be able to find the little spring at a local hardware or appliance parts The 'springy' part is exactly 3/4" long, and with the head/hooks, the whole spring is exactly 1_3/8" long, and 1/4 diameter. I'd send you mine if I could - I didn't need it!

Rezaul, you are the man!!! Have this exact model microwave with this problem. When I peeled back the plastic fitment I discovered that my latch was fine but a small piece that holds the wire did break from the housing unit. So I simply hooked the coil onto a metal lip on the door frame and that did the trick! I thought it hadn't worked until the very helpful person below me pointed out to check door fitment. Once I had *properly* re-secured the plastic fitment it worked perfect! You rock!
