Fantastic video. Stripped my Graham Farish 37 down as it wouldn't run. Cleaned it all up and now runs like a dream. Thank you for the informative video. I wouldn't have had the confidence to do it without your commentary 😊

Thanks for letting me know, im so glad the video has been able to help you out at getting your 37 running again. Yes i remember when i started out being quite nervous about pulling locos apart, now i find it a fun challenge too do so 🤣

i have a 37 and it has the same chassis as the 47 that you have shown, including the top part

Really helpful video, thank you so much for posting. Going to attempt my first service this weekend as I have a 47 running very erratic. Couldn't attempt it without this kind of clear information.

Very interesting, and useful as I am about to 'improve' the performance of a used class 37. Thanks.

G'day Rich, another great video!! 22 minutes in - Magnet - I replaced the bar magnet with a series of mini neodymium disc magnets on a couple of my really old GF Poole locos. I found that it reduced the current draw of the motor and the loco ran a little faster for the same voltage level. My magnets may have been cactus whereas as you mentioned, if the original magnet is still strong there may not be much advantage. Cheers, Barrie

Nice one Barrie, i may have to try Neo magnets again by the sounds of it 👍, sounds good

Superb video, I followed it and managed to resurrect two GF locos this afternoon, both non-runners previously!

@@ThisWayWorksTWW it does! It was uncanny though, the main reason my locos weren't running was because everything under the body was oil soaked, a bit like the loco you cleaned up in the video. Rubbing alcohol did the trick in terms of degreasing, too tip that was! I did drop one of the graphite pickups 4 times - onto a floor of the same colour lol, that was fun ; )

@@bazmatronic i like to clean that sludge from between the commutator plates too.. yeah oil really is N gauges arch enemy! Cleaning the sludge out really wakes them up doesent it 👍

Interesting to see that the old Poole era 47 had pickups on all wheelsets. The current Bachmann Farish 47s don't have them on the centre wheels and I've had plenty of issues as a result.
@ThisWayWorksTWW

Yeah its probably somehow a cost saving for Bachmann unfortunately 👍

What a great video, You have certainly given me a lot more confidence to take a look at my poorly fleet that have issues with them (mainly split gears). I love this type of video please keep them coming 😀All the best Tony.

Useful video but 5 pole motors are no longer available but can be changed to coreless motors with much better result.

Amazing in depth video as always, you're a real help when it comes to understanding how these miniature marvels work. I just bought a Poole 37 (No 8015) and the bit connecting to the top of the brush at 8:42 looks like your 47 and not the 37 which I think was odd, with the finicky wire and plastic top not being cut at the ends. I thought this was interesting. Do you have any advice on converting an old chassis like this to DCC?

Another fantastic video ! This is the best I’ve seen on servicing a GF loco. What I really liked was, you explained everything. You definitely know your stuff! ( I’m going to be cheeky here)...Would you consider doing a video on replacing older GF ( Poole) 3/5 pole drives with a Coreless motor? I’m never sure what can or cannot be upgraded? Excellent tutorial video again.. thanks for sharing. Colin Hamshaw

I do need to change the motor i have in a class 47 i fitted sound in and that will be to a coreless 👍, the motor in it at the moment isnt a 3/5 pole but il show you whats involved removal wise and what bits to keep etc if starting from stock bits.. might be a double wammy video for you 👍

Thank you for your reply.. Wow.. can’t ask for anymore than that! That will be fantastic.. Your tutorial videos are saving modellers like me, hours and hours of searching for information that normally skip over the essential bits.. . A brilliant channel of information ... thank you once again!

Feels so familiar watching you do this. Now I'm going to strip one of mine apart to clean it all up. How am I going to get my hands on a set of your gears?
@ThisWayWorksTWW
@ThisWayWorksTWW 2 года назад
Ive still to test my gears more as these green ones are a slightly different design and new material.. they take a very long time for me to clean and cure atm so maybe in the future i may sell some but atm its just not a viable thing to actually sell... if i do manage to make a load i can post a link here, in the meantime really its only peters spares and farish n spares for new oem gears im afffraid👍...

Would be interested to know more about how you designed, printed and finished the gears. I have a printer and plans for scratchbuilding projects in N and it would save on buying spares and customising the sizes would be lovely.

Il have to put a little video together in the future👍, i use fusion 360, there is a spur tool you can use so it relatively straight forward 👍

Hi another great video, im trying to solve N gauge Lima motor replacement any ideas ? OO uses cd motor but there's nothing small enough that i can find for N gauge
@ThisWayWorksTWW
@ThisWayWorksTWW Год назад
Ive thought long and hard about this aswell... With Limas as you probably know the motors are rotated 90 degrees to most other n gauge locos out there. It might be worth scanning over the aliexpress website for a micro pancake coreless motor or something similar 👍, ive yet to find anything so if you have any luck let me know, im just gona have a look now 👍, with the likes of graham farish, minitrix and dapol you can get coreless motors (similar to cdrom motor upgrade in 00), most of the time you have to mod the chassis's or make adapters to help fit these though...
@TheDavinator2009
@TheDavinator2009 Год назад
@@ThisWayWorksTWW yes iv been on there looking for ages but to no avail. The only thing that remotely comes close size wise are quad copter motors, not sure if the can handle 12v. Iv got a resin 3d printer so modding the drive bogie shouldnt be a problem
@ThisWayWorksTWW
@ThisWayWorksTWW Год назад
@@TheDavinator2009 i had a good look and couldnt find anything really that i could see would work in a Lima Deltic.. some of those stepper motors are a nice size however actually controlling a stepper motor would be the issue... Then theres brushless motors but again control would be hard again.. maybe in the future China will make a toy that has in it the motor were after then Aliexpress will be full of them!
