The Astromechanics EOS Adapter has been a complete game changer for me. It allowed me to start using Canon lenses with astrocameras for astrophotography... yet at the same time perform autofocus using the focusing motor of the lens! In this video I will look at the advantages but also some of the drawbacks of this amazing product!
astromechanics.org/
In the video, I mention that there is now an adapter that can fit two inch filters from Astromechanics - while that adapter exists, it is actually unique to a Japanese company called ElectricSheep! www.electricsheep.co.jp/astros...
My ASCOM driver for that adapter (made by me, NO GUARANTEES! Controls only focuser, not aperture): drive.google.com/file/d/1DXiJ...

Just be aware that despite claims on the Astromechanics website, this device does not work well with Tamron lenses!. It has limited functionality with three Tamron lenses only (the 150-600mm just does not work at all). It seems to have better success with Sigma canon mount lenses, but it's primarily suited to Canon branded lenses. I bought one but had to send it back because it wouldn't work with the Tamron lenses I have.

Thanks so much for your feedback on this, pinning this comment, this is important! Yes, I was mentioning that at around 05:00 - my Sigma lens seems to work fine, but indeed sometimes has connection issues. So sticking to pure Canon lenses is probably a good thing. I'm glad you were able to return your adapter!

@@CuivTheLazyGeek in general, Sigma and other 3rd party lenses aren't guaranteed to work (I got bitten by the Sigma reverse-engineering of the Canon EF protocol decades ago, when the protocol changed on the Canon EOS 5 and thereafter - not fun at all)

There's just so much to talk about in this hobby! I keep finding new ideas when I wake up - I sometimes shoot several videos within the span of a couple of hours. The editing is the painful part, but I try to approach the videos in a way that there will be as little editing work needed as possible. Your production values are light-years ahead of mine (also, beautiful Losmandy mount), and you can actually star hop, something I've never been really able to do. Heck, when I get to a darker zones, there's so many stars I can't even find the summer triangle anymore! I am looking forward to more content on your channel :)

Bought one some months ago to use with my range of Canon and Sigma lenses, not used it yet but like you, I saw it’s potential and just bought one. I have a dozen various ZWO cameras and plan to use different side by side setups to more images in the same length of time. I also have 2 Canon 450D modified- one has the Baader filter and one is a deBayered Mono with Peltier cooling, I plan to use them side by side with Pentax M42 Super Takumar lenses, either with pairs of identical focal length or wide and high power. My systems are certainty a hybrid mix, including the ASIAIR Pro units to tablet control the mounts and imaging camera’s. In short supply are cloud free nights. Great series you are producing, the best I have seen so far, no music, pyrotechnics, and you are a computer whiz as well. I build my own computer gear but never got into writing software. All best wishes from down under, Southern Cross Observatories, (yes I built 2 with different gear /in each), Tasmania 42 South. 🇦🇺😁🔭 . Where did you purchase those small tube rings/ assemblies? I normally make all my own mechanical equipment, however, saving time at my age is becoming a higher priority!

Thanks for the feedback Shevill! Yes, this adapter really changed the way I imaged with lenses. It caused me to get rid of a lot of equipment, because Canon lens + adapter would just work better. You have quite an esoteric list of equipment! I used to have a deBayered mono Canon body as well :) ASIAir is something I may consider once they add Auto-Focus capabilities! I think I'd be using music and better video editing techniques if I had the time, but I prefer to focus on content quality rather than production values... That's usually not good for a RU-vid channel! As for the rings, they're from a Japanese manufacturer called ElectricSheep... www.electricsheep.co.jp/astroshop/?itemcode=esrngs01

Quite an interesting tool. I would like to have it working with my 400mm/5.6L (plus teleconverter) and an astrocamera+filter wheel at the end of the year (for now, I plan to just use a dSLR body and my lenses on a mount). Any mechanical fit problems apparent with the current version? I guess that it's necessary to use ring holders, anyway...
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 4 года назад
As long as it's a Canon lens, and your filter wheel plus future dedicated astrocam can be use to be at 44mm from the lens flange, everything should work well! Although yes, as you mention ring holders are indeed necessary. Clear Skies!

Oh, no, sorry I was a bit late :) Still, the ZWO adapter, while not letting you control the focus motor, should be competent. The mounting rings are from a Japanese seller - since this is a frequently asked question, I've added a post about that on my IG: instagram.com/cuivlazygeek/

The position index always resets to 5000, so you'd have to use workarounds, like focus offsets per filter, which should work fine!

Hey Cuiv, awesome info. I am getting a ASI174 mono mainly solar imaging but my idea was to do wide field shoots with my Canon 200mm lens. So, I was getting this camera with a filter wheel package. Do you know if the backspace will be enough for a filter wheel? I still think there is time to change it and get a color camera. - Cheers Kurt

@CuivTheLazyGeek 4 года назад
Oh my, I am looking forward to seeing some solar imaging results! Newton rings will be your enemy though..! I looked at the 174MM, and there is that 11mm T-ring that can be removed, so it should be just like my 1600MM (e.g. should be fine): - Astromechanics (17mm) - EFW (20mm) - 174MM (6.5mm) For a total of 43.5mm. You may even want to add a 0.7mm or 1mm plastic ring in there to get just over 44mm (depending on filter width). Good luck!

Hi, Cuiv! Thanks a lot again for your video. I have a couple of lenses and would like to give it a try. Though I'm still using DSLR and the backfocus issue is an obstacle, is an interesting option when upgrading camera. I was wondering (from my ignorance about drivers and stuff like that), since a DSLR is able to control aperture and autofocus of a lens (and that could also be done via EOS utility software, al least for Canon cameras), why that feature cannot be used in a sequence like Nina? Or it's just a matter of adding a couple lines of code into the ascom driver as you did? 🙄
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 2 года назад
Sorry for late answer (just 9 months, I was gestating), but you are right - however, this is something that the current NINA devs had (at the time) decided not to tackle. I think it could be built, but definitely not just a couple lines of code...
@cucubits

Here's a maybe weird question. Would something like this keep the optical image stabilizer locked inside a Sigma 100-400 lens? No matter how I take the camera body off, once it looses power, the OIS just frees up and part of the lens just rattles inside. Not ideal to shoot like this with an ASI camera. Any ideas how to lock it down otherwise?

If NINA is open-source, would it be possible to change NINA so that if the focuser does not report on its temperature-compensating ability, NINA just assumes that it can't?
@CuivTheLazyGeek

So you mean hide all temperature controls? By default NINA just ignores temperature if there is no reading available, so I think it already does what you mention

I got this adapter in Oct, and I have NOT been able to get it to work, though it is a HUGE upgrade to the crappy ZWO adapter. I have never been able to get the AF to work, either using NINA, APT, or the Desktop Ap. It also does NOT adjust the aperture. I have only used it as a mechanical adapter. The driver (either Desktop or ASCOM) opens, and I find the lens from the drop down. I have my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS ii connected at this time. If I try change the Av from 2.8 using the drop down menu, nothing happens and the new Av option remains BLUE. The lens aperture remains wide-open. I am currently trying this with the Desktop Ap. I have tried this with direct connection to my Windows10 laptop, connected through a powered USB3 hub, and through my ZWO ASI183mm-Pro USB ports with the ASI183 powered and its USB3 connect to my USB3 hub. Nothing seems to work. When I attach my Canon EF300mm f/2.8L (orig. Non-IS, not in menu but I select the f/2.8L IS), I get the same results, with the very bad result of NOT being able to focus even manually (it is a focus by wire, so requires an electronic connection). I am sure that somehow I have not installed it correctly. What does it take to get it to control the lens? Can you send the corrected driver?
@CuivTheLazyGeek
@CuivTheLazyGeek 4 года назад
Hi Mark! Well, that's legitimately disappointing. Off the top of my head, two things come to mind: - Make sure that the lens pins and the Astromechanics pins are aligned together! After all, there are three possible rotations of the lens when connecting it to the adapter, and only one of them will achieve contact with the pins! - When connecting via USB, make sure in the Windows device manager that a new COM port has appeared - Test with the desktop utility, so that any ASCOM shenanigans can be ignored. In there, make sure to test each of the COM ports one after the other (select COM port, click connect, try to move the focus with the buttons, etc.) Otherwise, I think Astromechanics should try to help you - it is very straightforward to send commands to the adapter directly via Serial commands, and they could try that via something like TeamViewer or equivalent. I have added my own ASCOM driver to the description - note that for testing, the desktop utility is better. Good luck!!

@@CuivTheLazyGeek I contacted AstroMechanics yesterday, and Sergey responded within 30mins! After another fast email, after I checked the pin voltages and tried another lens, EF50mm f/1.8 STM, Sergey said that the problem was not software, but must be a faulty adapter. It seems like he has modified the physical pin connection (faulty connect may be my problem), as he is sending me 2 replacements, one like I have (classic) and a new design with spring-loaded electrical contacts. The downside is that with COVID-19 deliveries are very slow. AstroMechanics support seems to be excellent!

@marklamb4707 4 года назад
@Cuiv, The Lazy Geek A couple days ago, I receive my no cost replacement from Sergey; it took much longer than normal to get shipment through Russia since COVID. He sent a new design and another of the older design. The new design uses a micro-USB instead of the older mini-USB. I believe the new design also has spring loaded pin connections. I tested with 2 lenses without any camera attached and the new design work fine, both changing aperture and moving the focus. The replacement older design did not work, but I was using my original cable. Later, I replaced the mini-USB cable and both worked as they should. It looks like my problem was that AstroMechanics originally sent a bad cable.

Here are the "thin" and "thicker" versions of the Astromechanics adapter connected to a pair of Canon f#2.8 200mm lenses. If you use the thicker adapter with an ASI 1600MC Pro camera then you can bolt the camera straight to the adapter for a very solid unit. You can also get at the camera front plate tilt adjusters as they lie outside the diameter of the adapter - and the fact that you are perhaps 2mm INSIDE the 44mm backfocus is an advantage as it means you can operate the lens BEYOND infinity to get a full V-curve for FocusMax. www.newforestobservatory.com/2022/02/17/miniwasp-major-upgrade-17-02-2022/
