Gear That Actually Makes Running More Enjoyable

As an ultra runner, I'm often recommended running gear that really doesn't make running better. In this video, I breakdown my view on running gear and I talk about all the gear that has genuinely made my running journey more enjoyable. I discuss gear I would recommend for a brand new runner and how I approach the mandatory gear requirements for ultramarathons. I discuss everything from running shoes, watches, head torches, waterproof clothing to headphones. I discuss my current favourite pieces of running equipment and how they've improved my running experience.

The Naked running band was a real game changer for me. Easily holds everything you could want- phone, keys, gels and even a couple of soft flasks (all at the same time!) with minimal bounce. Very specific sizing and not cheap- but one of those things that I’m glad I invested in.
@colinmcc8564

Agreed, I live in a very hot/humid client so I am skeptical of clothing and gear recommendations because less is almost always better, but the Naked band is worth it compared to the cheaper belts out there.

Love this. Great advice for anyone starting out for sure. My four best run kit items are 1) Good brand but always old model shoes (never pay over £60-70) and keep them clean of grit and aired well after each run. I still use a pair of Mizuno Wave Equate 5 shoes with over 2000 kms. 2) Simple breathable sports boxers (£6 Decathlon) as they eliminate chafing as the top of the legs are protected, even in torrential rain or extreme heat (I live/train in southern Türkiye). 3) Homemade sweatband made 5 yrs ago from cheap microfibre towel cutoffs keeps my eyes sweat free (might look like an 80s has-been, but that's another matter). 4) Hydration vest; simply because it allows me to train for 20-30km per refill in a hot climate (refill with water, then add lemon juice and pink salt concentrate I carry in small hotel shampoo bottles). These four items have been a game changer in terms of what and where I can venture.
@jamesday1

Thanks Ali! Totally agree on the hydration vest for longer adventures in the heat. Must be a challenge training out there! When I lived in Greece 10 years ago, me and a friend did a Windsurfing road trip down the west coast of Türkiye. Had an amazing time but definitely experienced your summer heat!

It's like any challenge in the end, just preparation and practise I guess @@jamesday1. My first 5k on a mildly warm morning nearly killed me, since done 10x that at 37°. Like running in serious rain or -10°, it's just familiarisation, the right gear, and a dose of being sheer nuts on occasion.

Decathlon has those plain black running shorts with a zip pocket in the back for a phone for around 15-20 euros. My phone does not fit there because it quite large, so I stuff it in the inside pocket at the front, but medium sized phones should fit I reckon.

Excellent video James. I think new runners often get bombarded and overwhelmed with gear, especially the idea of "shoe rotations". I know I did. I was lucky enough to find a trail runner I really like that does everything well, and the same for a road shoe. I eventually got some race shoes for halfs/marathons and that's all I need. Saves me money and makes running much more enjoyable.

A few people have mentioned Decathlon, can highly recommend, especially the TR2 trainers. They cost £60, often on sale for £30 or £40 and i'm on my fifth pair now. My previous four pairs have all done well over 1200+ miles before the tread went flat and uppers all still intact on them. As a self confessed running gear geek this was wonderfully refreshing and pretty much spot on advice. As mentioned below, a good running belt is useful for days when you don't need a full pack.(Naked is by far the best I've used) And agree completely on the waterproof top comments, the only reason to have one is to check off mandatory kit lists.

Alpkit Koulin Trail shorts are almost identical to the Patagonia Strider Pro (which I think yours are). The elastic side pockets are two wider ones rather than two pairs of smaller ones, and they're a 6" inseam rather than a 7". I've got both and hardly ever wear the Patagonia ones now. Thanks for that useful video. I realise they might not be considered ‘running gear’ but could I ask you about your experience with running gels? Do they work? And if so, how often in your ultra marathons do you consume them?
@jamesday1
@jamesday1 6 месяцев назад
No worries. Absolutely. I use gels on every ultra and pretty much every run over 90 minutes. They work just like other carbohydrate options (sports drinks like tailwind are another ultra favourite). Typically most people run out of carbs between 2 and 3 hours into a run, so with ultras, carbs are critical for getting through events. The more the better, but your stomach can only handle a limited amount. You'll need to train your stomach to get used to gels whilst running (it's likely the gels won't feel great the first time you use them running). If I'm on a training run, I'll take 1 gel an hour. During a marathon, I'll take 1 every 30 minutes. During an ultra, I'll combine gels with tailwind and solid food. Worth experimenting with different gels and alternatives to find out what works for you. Hopefully that helps!
@David-mo8rl

Thanks. I’ve just ordered some SIS gels. Do you usually take one before the run, too?

@@David-mo8rl Not usually on a training run but in a race I try to start eating as early as possible. Maybe within the first 30 minutes. Always good to get on the front foot with nutrition during a race. Best thing about SIS gels are they have lots of fluid so you can take them without water. Maybe start by taking just 1 on a run and then increase the amount you're taking across a number of runs. Always good to ease into new things with running.

I've now moved onto Swedish Audio Books for books I know the story really well and Swedish podcasts about running like Spring Snyggt and Maratonlabbet, but the running podcasts are definitely more challenging to follow. I've also got a Swedish tutor which is helping massively with my progress. It's the Salomon ADV 12. It's a bit expensive but I've had it for years, it's comfortable and still in great condition!

You might like to consider Mizuno multi pocket shorts. Quite similar to the Patagonia ones at about 1/2 the price. Sportsshoes stocks them in the uk.

Great, no hype video! I absolutely recommend finding running websites, and trolling the clearance section. I get most of my gear that way, so I'm able to get top notch gear with my tight budget. I rarely spend more than $65 on ANYTHING... shoes, vest, compression tights, etc. Ialso find incredible brands in like new condition at thrift shops and mountaineering shops. One more bit of advice... if you go to your local running store to try on items, with the plan of leaving and buying them online, please remember to buy SOMETHING from them. They have a lot of money invested in overhead, stock, employees, etc, and if people just use them to try gear before buying elsewhere, it's terribly rude and unfair. Support local, even if it's not via the $140 shoes.

Baleaf gear on Amazon is cheap and affordable and keeps me warm in the winter. I love the tights and thermal shirts. What are your favorite trail shoes? Specifically for wet, technical terrain. I thought a Brit would be the best person to ask!

Patagonia Endless Run Shorts are the best for me. They are the shorts version of their Endless Run Tights. So, they're a spandex short with no bounce pockets and a "modesty front" which is just some loose fabric across the front that makes them a little more modest. I now have 3 pairs. However, Patagonia is never cheap.

As someone that sweats out of my eyeballs and can overheat when it's above 5ºC when running, a technical tshirt is a must. Decathlon 5€ will do fine, and then any that you get from the events, but something that will pull sweat away from your body and will dry in seconds.

Here's what I got from your video: - Just any cheap and durable shoes will do just fine, as long as you're relatively comfortable in them. Maybe have another pair for road running. Chasing new fad shoes feels good but it's not gonna get you a PR. - You don't need hundred-buck shorts, just one to two pairs with zipped, elastic pockets, enough to carry keys, maybe phones if you don't have GPX watch and some snacks. - Invest in a proper head torch (Can you tell us the brand name or just the lumen you use? I don't mind clicking a few aff links). - Invest in a high volume but more importantly comfortable vest. - 2 flasks are more convenient than a bladder. - A waterproof jacket, no matter how high-end, cannot completely block the rain. Just buy a lightweight one (Personally I often bring a cheap waterproof jacket and 2 light nylon raincoats) - GPX read, long battery is all you need in a watch.
