Ever since Nick Hornby invented lists in the nineties, humans never got tired of things ordered by numbers. Here is my completely biased and absolutely personal list of instruments and gear released in 2018 that inspired me, be it bought or endorsed.
SPOILERS:
1. Koma Elektronik Field Kit FX
2. AC Noises AMA
3. Morfbeats Gamelan Strips
4. David Bellinger eKalimba (Patch Point)
5. Bastl Thyme
6. Oto Machines Boum
7. Squarp Hermod
Disclaimer because transparency is important to me: no company colluded with me to make this list. I did get endorsed with a few products over the year but with no set of directions or agreements to promote them, especially not in a video like this. Also, there is a joke about lists in the opening statement of this description.
Happy New Year!

I really appreciate your approach to the bastl thyme. I feel similarly when working with the machine, that it is more of a collaboration and conversation than something which I dictate what it is to do.

Great video. My favourite new bit of gear this year is the Moog DFAM. Just so much fun.

When I first discovered the Koma EFK FX, I was blown away. It really got all I could have dreamed of and more. Past time I would use a 4 channel mixerboard with external LFO, Delay, Chorus and Stereo Imaging pedals. It works no question about it! But it also ate a lot of space and did lack main sync.

I love your work, and a lot of the gear you explore has influenced my effects chains with the gear o already own and in Ableton. Thanks again for so much food for thought. Happy new year.

Great video! I’m going to be on the DFAM bandwagon for my favorite 2018 thing. Thinking about getting another.

Thanks for introducing us all to the gamelan strips! I like that you don't just promote "flavor of the month" stuff (Elektron, Moog, volcas, etc.), but rather gear that adds character and personality to a setup.

I got hip to you a couple of months back - and you really inspired me! I have been working "inside the box" since the mid 90s (technically for many of the those years I was a gigging bassist). I recently walked away from the professional art world (I was doing sound design and composition for live theater after a couple of years beating my head against the walls the movie studios in Los Angeles). I have been trying to get back to making music, and sound art for myself again. Like I did back in the 90s.... back then I had next to nothing to make music - a cracked copy of acid pro - a tascam 4 track - a danelectro echo pedal (still the only one I have ever had - got it for 20 bucks used back in 98 - minimal but built like a tank - I didn't have a proper audio interface - plugging a Sure 56 D- dynamic mic into the back of my sound blaster card with a stereo mini plug adaptor was the only way I could "sample" or rip from CD. Then my uncle gave me an old Harmon Cardon stereo stuner amp and some kenwood speakers.... MONITORS!!! Since then I have gone to audio engineering school and been mentored by my personal sound design hero - Dane Davis - and worked on crazy stuff with "Top O The Line" gear. And I felt like I had made much more interesting music prior to music school and my audio training.... I wanted to get my-self a small smei-modular - like the Mother 32 - which is reasonably priced sure - but my wife and I are BROKE. So I cant justify spending money on the Koma Elektronik Field Kit FX (which I have been drooling over for at least a year - or the stuff over at Bastle if I could afford it Id buy the soft pop, bit ranger AND the .... hell Id buy em all! The sad part is, its all pretty damn affordable - then my wife got laid off - so forget it. It was at this point I stumbled across your channel. I have a couple of old hand held mono tape recorders - the kind students or reports use - that I had collected a couple of years ago to dirty up the single on something - basically just a reamping technique - I came across you making drones with hand helds - and it sent me scurrying into some dusty boxes in the studio. THANK YOU. It was just what I needed. I started working with sound - when I was little - before I knew what it was - I would play with it. This really brought back a sense of PLAY and discovery.... which is SO important - not just as an artist but a person. And now I make music for the joy of it again - I mean - Im learning too - if that makes sense - too many years in the trenches - to many bands - shitting clubs and disappointments - you dig? But now Im just grateful! Thanks man! Cheers! Consider me a new life long fan. For the record I love your demeanor on camera. You have a very dry sense of humor - but its obvious that your are a warm and authentic person. Either that or you are a brilliant actor.n Thanks for the inspiration - its in short supply around here (my here, small town USA... but frankly the US in general is having a time of it... dont know if you've heard...). Cheers!
