It is true that helical gears can handle more speed than spur gears and are used in almost all car transmissions. Nevertheless many racing transmissions and most motorcycle transmissions are using spur gears.
@CAEPlus
@CAEPlus Год назад
Correct, racing cars/motorsports use spur gears in their transmission due to their higher efficiency. In addition, spur gears don't generate any thrust (axial loads); thus, the overall transmission design can be lighter which is critical in a motorsport configuration (To handle the axial loads, helical gears necessitate the use of heavy-duty transmission casings, shafts, and bearings). Still, the incredibly high noise the spur gears generates makes them less desirable for being used in the transmission of regular cars (except the rear gear in older cars that used to be a spur gear).
@carultch
@carultch Год назад
@@CAEPlus Why don't automotive transmissions simply use herringbone gears to null the axial thrust, rather than transmitting it to the bearings? Is there an advantage to using helical gears with axial bearings, instead of using herringbone gears and radial-only bearings?
@stevenrs11
@stevenrs11 Год назад
@Carl Hansen Herringbone gears are substantially more expensive to manufacture, and can be tricky to assemble.
@carultch
@carultch Год назад
@@stevenrs11 Thank you for answering and that makes perfect sense. So it is a matter of tradeoffs, that axial bearings are a more economical choice to herringbone gears, in terms of which one is easier to construct. Are there any performance tradeoffs between the options of herringbone gears with radial-only bearings vs helical gears with axial bearings? Such as does one of these have better friction or efficiency characteristics?

The part where you are talking about a high point gear. I can't help but link that to machining on a lathe. Most people think having the tool at center of the part is ideal. It isn't. And being under the centerline would cause the part to climb over the tool. Which I assume would have almost the same effect with this style of gear. I only mention this because in turning on a lathe, you want the tool slightly above center.... "for better wear resistance" on the tool. (And a more consistent cut) Seems a bit coincidental, doesn't it? Almost like one learned off the back of another manufacturing style. 😅

Something I didn’t see mentioned is how to choose the number of teeth to use in each gear when their ratios are low (but not 1:1) or the number of gears to use for high ratios. In particular, would it make sense to use numbers that are relatively prime in order to evenly distribute the wear between pairs of meshing teeth? What are the pros and cons of using a few large teeth versus lots of small teeth?
@Amipotsophspond
@Amipotsophspond 10 месяцев назад
this is a material question, so the best way is to think about this in a extreme way. if I make really really small thin teeth like we are talking tin foil thin then rather then turning the gear it will fail because the foil thick teeth bend and break. so that's why you don't want too thin. so rather then starting with 2 gears lets start with 1 gear. so their are 360 degrees in a circle let's pretend each gear is 1 degree you have a stick that's on a line that enables you to push only one gear at a time. you push the 360 teeth gear and move the gear exactly 1 degree you push it 360 times and you have made 1 rotation let's say you lifted a 1 pound weight 1 inch in doing so. now let's say we have a gear that has 30 degree gear teeth meaning their are 12 of them on the circle, you push it with your stick on a line and you move the circle 30 degrees you push the gear 12 times and you make 1 full rotation and lift the 1 pound weight 1 inch. the weight and the distance stayed the same so it takes less torque to do it 360 times vrs 12 times. the lever, pully and gear are all the same they are taking doing something a lot and trading for using greater effort the lever moves a greater distance, the pully uses more rope, the gear turns the circle a smaller amount all basically the same thing.

It makes sense for helical to produce axial thrust. But when using two gears that have opposite angles shouldn't they cancel each other?
@CAEPlus
@CAEPlus Год назад
Thanks for your question! Correct, the axial thrust force can be canceled by using a double helical gear (herringbone). Even though there is a net zero axial force on the shaft with a double helical gear, the axial loads should not be ignored. These forces create a moment that must be counteracted by the bearings and must be included when calculating bearing loads during the gear engineering design process. This is one of the main reasons why helical gears have a lower efficiency than spur gears. I hope we were able to answer your question!

If you had a spherical ball would it allow better turns? Like a Dyson ball?
@CAEPlus
@CAEPlus 5 месяцев назад
Correct, a gear similar to the spherical ball in Dyson vacuum cleaners can offer improved maneuverability and ease of turning. For instance, unlike traditional gears that primarily rotate along one axis, a spherical ball gear will be capable of moving in any direction. This omnidirectional functionality allows for sharper, more fluid turns in the mechanical linkages connected to the gears, thereby improving overall operational efficiency. Recently, Japanese engineers and scientists have conducted significant research on spherical (ball-shaped) gear designs. This innovative work is currently still in the research and development phase, reflecting ongoing advancements in the field of mechanical engineering. Please let us know if you would be interested for a video on this subject. Thanks for your comment!

does the worm gear and the wheel gear attached to it move in the same direction? And also, if we were to have a straight bevel gear with two gears horizontally on it would they both move in the same direction?
@CAEPlus
@CAEPlus Год назад
Thanks for your question, and sorry for our late response. Actually, the axes of rotation of the worm gear and the pinion are different. So the direction of rotation will be on different axes. However, if you mean, the worm gear can rotate in both directions with a helical gear? The answer is "Yes"; worm drives can be built with helical gearing that is either right-hand or left-hand, allowing them to rotate in clockwise or counterclockwise directions. For instance, a right-hand helical gear rotates the worm clockwise or vice versa. Regarding your second question, if a straight bevel gear has been meshed with two gears horizontally, each of the meshed gears will have an opposite direction of rotation. So if you are looking at the bevel gear from the side, one gear will be rotating clockwise and the other counterclockwise. I hope we were able to answer your question.
@carultch
@carultch Год назад
The bevel gear you are describing sounds like a crown gear. A crown gear is a bevel gear taken to the extremes, so it can interface with a spur gear on the perpendicular shaft, rather than another bevel gear.

Are elliptical gears still made?

As far as we know, yes, elliptical gears are still made and in use and are an important component in specific mechanical applications where their unique properties are required.

Have you covered strain wave drives as well as cycloidal disk drives?
@CAEPlus
@CAEPlus Год назад
Thanks for your comment! Actually, "Strain wave gearing" is a special type of gear, and its working fundamental is very similar to a ring gear. Regarding the "Cycloidal disk," we will be creating a video for hydraulic gear pumps and will cover a similar coupling drive in that video. Our intention for this video is to introduce the most commonly used gears in the industry. I hope we can cover the two other types of gear/coupler in our following videos.

@@CAEPlus ok sweet. I know a fair amount about the 2, but I just wanted to see if there was a video you had produced on the topic. They are a lot less known. I’m excited to see those videos. I’ll make sure I have my notification bell checked for this channel

Please give me your suggestions for the software you used to make such vedioes
@CAEPlus

Actually, we use multiple different software to create these videos (engineering, animation, graphics design). So each team/person creates their section in the corresponding software, and later we assemble the footage into one part.

nice but the background music is way too loud, the voice should be well above the music

Used to be control of valve any
@CAEPlus

I am not sure if this is a question or just a comment. Correct, the camshaft function is to ensure the engine's inlet and exhaust valves are operating at the right time, with the exact stroke and in a precisely defined sequence.

From a visual perspective, your video is terrific. However, I bailed quickly after tiring of the needlessly loud background music.

FYI: That’s not a pic of ‘double bevel’ it’s a herringbone (double helical) - matter of fact there’s no such thing as a ‘double bevel’ gear.
