I think it's cool that Rebel Boat started off as a "our boss sucks let's do our own thing as a collective." But it's no shocker that Randy made himself the guy in charge later
Wai-woah, holy shit, this video is FIVE years old? And I'm just being recommended it now? Geez. Great vid! It apparently aged very well, seeing how Borderlands 3, Tiny Tina's Wonderland, and Randy's ramblings have continued to fester.
Also just watching this in Jan 2024. I played BL3 a couple years ago... All those great characters and they still made is as bland as a piece of bread somehow. The Epic exclusivity didn't help it either. There are so few franchises today that haven't fallen off a cliff... WoW, Overwatch, COD, Borderlands, all sports games (lootbox hell), Mass Effect, Halo, Dragon Age, Fallout 76...
I didn't think it would be possible for me to dislike Gearbox and Randy Pitchford any more than I do but somehow you managed to with the story of Richard.
Gearbox is so bad, but having 2000 hrs in BL2, it's SOOOOO hard to outright dismiss them. It's clear they're a one trick pony when doing their own thing
CryMor Gaming it's obvious the only way to fix gearbox now is to get rid of Randy pitchford. They really need a new head since Randy constantly buries the grave deeper. I forget the previous xbox boss (the 'if you don't want drm, get a 360' guy), but replacing him with Phil Spencer was a good move. Xbox still can't recover 100% after that mess, but they are gaining good will
Don Mattrick, yeah. He went on to be the CEO of Zynga before he was fired. Problem is that removing Randy isn't something easy (or guaranteed). He's the primary owner of the company.
This video will need a sequel some time in the future as Pitchford still steps into and throws around doodoo big time. I like how benevolently objective you managed to portray all of this.
As much as I enjoy the Borderlands franchise, I never knew about short film that was created before it took liberties of using some of it's animations and workd building. Now I'd like to see Codehunters get at least some recognition. It was a great watch and eye opener when it came to the various similarities between the two.
I know this video is 3 yrs old, but I had to comment because the brief flash of "RANDY WILL REMEMBER THAT" on the screen gave me a real good chuckle. Awesome vid, gonna be watching the rest of the channels vids after this one
Did you know the final boss of Opposing Force had a Doom 2 reference in its sounds? When reversed, it says "To win the game, you must kill me, Randy Pitchford". Fitting in hindsight if you ask me
@@Inventure751 Faceless marine kills giant stationary threat with a veritable arsenal of guns after tearing through an infested facility... not surprising
the “girlfriend mode” skill tree for mecromancer was kinda spot on. my gf and i picked up this game earlier this year. her first time playing and she chose mecro. heavily invested into best friends forever tree as well… she’s new to fps shooters and ut was her first one she’s taken seriously…. dude he was on point w that. this video is 5 years old but even today that shit was right. he said it funny but i believe him when he said he said that as a personal anecdote
Yeah this is like the one thing I'm kinda on Randy's side on. Kind of a funny ability/name tbh, no reason to apologize to self righteous bullies over that.
@@ShaCaro i don’t understand how that has to do with anything demeaning. you’re assumptions are wild. it was her first fps game and her first console. we hit op 10 yesterday. saying someone is new has nothing to do with their abilities. i think you’re part of the problem
@@eddieru He's saying that you having to provide context, suggests that it is actually demeaning on its own, hence why you had to provide context twice.
@@Kiergura my context was an anecdote that explained the genius in gaiges character for new players. i provided context twice because my original comment was a ramble done with no proofreading. if it does fit in then it’s demeaning apparently. but if it , fit its still demeaning apparently
Interestingly they were first signed on to do CS for Xbox before that turned into a development nightmare, iirc Randy pitched the idea for that port entirely
i have never wanted to physically hurt anyone involved in the studio behind a game until i bore witness to the tragedy that was new tales from the borderlands
@@AndrewCreatez Gearbox is a safe space bubble, this will be it for a good while now. Their self awareness playing pedo-traits and self-critique as a joke is concerning of what's inside the walls.
it's insane that changes in lighting to improve gameplay could ONCE be grounds for successful lawsuit for false advertisement. Nowadays releases are like MS paint at home drawings and nobody's getting sued.
I'm starting to notice a pattern here Works with 3D Realms - Shut Down Works with Time Gate Studios - Shut Down Works with 2k Australlia - Shut Down Works with Telltale Games - They nearly shut down, went bankrupt and are just now crawling out of the hole Working with Randy and Gearbox is a absolute curse on the industry and no developer should ever bloody work with them again, dear god
Borderlands 2 was the first game I truly remember playing when I was only in 5th grade many years ago. My friend and I would play it over and over again all day and night. I still know so many voice lines and scripted events from the game and still play it to this day. It's my favorite game of all time. Sad to see how Gearbox fell when 3 came out. I personally don't care for it but ik some people do
Some reason despite working in the industry for years. I didn't realize that. Randy Pitchfork used to be a magician which explains so goddamn much about all of his business decisions. 😂
Wayforward deserves better than to be mentioned only with a Shrek Game. They are perhaps better known for their work on the Shantae games, which have a definite cult following.
Actually, saw Crymor explain to a comment here that it was an inside joke for Shrektober, an annual event for their community so thought I'd bring it up just in case. But yeah! I love Shantae!! I also loved their Ducktales Remastered. And a boy and his blob. They're actually super underrated imo
First of all, the amount of research and work required to produce a video of that level is incredible. Kudos to the Crymor team for that! I enjoyed every second of it! The only history I knew from Gearbox was from their Borderlands series which I spent a lot of time playing. While I wasn't aware of the many controversies over the course of their existence.. I really couldn't care less.. I just want Borderlands 3.
Yes. I just want Borderlands 3 again. Like, remake the whole story. Delete the whole thing. Like nothing ever existed after Borderlands 2. Then we can actually look forward to BL3 being made.
bothers in arms was a seriously good game, played the shit out of the first two. even tho wwii shooters were really getting stale by then, bothers in arms was so unique i loved it. remember getting the third one and being very unimpressed right from the start lol
Fascinating coverage of the studio and its history. Frankly, I'm still burned up about the back to back failures of Aliens Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem. That's only half of it though, the rest is just being sick to my stomach any time Randy shows his face or speaks. He has done nothing but lie, point fingers, and make excuses for his own failings and poor decisions. He's simply a gross human being and a black mark on the industry. Since 2013, if any game has an association with Gearbox or Pitchford, it's immediately off my radar.
Randy Pitchford is the Michael Scott of game development. His team does sometimes a good job, he has no clue why, when asked he just looks at the camera and says something random lol
Downfall? What? They're no longer loved but by all reason they're successful and doing great for themselves. It seems like a natural lifecycle of any successful studio-turn-publisher. Publishing is a ruthless business and it takes a pretty mean shark to survive. I mean remember when Activision was founded as a protest to Atari's treatment of their staff? How EA was founded to be the ethical game development and publishing company? Back when Trip Hawkins was around.
Downfall - "A loss of status." Yes, I do remember Activision and EA, but their stories have been told pretty well. No one has really made a story about Gearbox, so I did this. I presented it pretty neutrally, I think.
Man i can't believe that are the same company that made hl opposing force which my favourite game and part of my childhood thanks for the cool video bro
Holy shit is that tweet he made in the end real? About the similarities in the cover box? How could you make a statement like that after the borderlands controversy? That's hilarious. Great video by the way. Super interesting stuff
I noticed this video because RU-vid showed it as a paid advertisement. Must say this is quality content. For once RU-vid actually made me check out an advertise video... I'm subscribing.
the halo combat evolved port for the pc wasnt that good, but I was still really glad that bungie didnt forget about the pc gamers, and im also glad gearbox didnt completely screw it up.
Gearbox absolutely participated in the false advertising surrounding Aliens: Colonial Marines. I was obsessed with the pre-release promotional content for that game. Gearbox released numerous behind the scenes development videos with interviews featuring their staff talking about all the incredible things they were doing to make the game perfect. All of that turned out to be lies, and Gearbox quickly scrubbed ALL of those videos from the internet (which is impressive in and of itself).
As a big Aliens franchise Marines fan starved for good games to do them justice, who loved & trusted Gearbox for giving us HL2: Opposing Force (my favorite part of HL itself when I was a little girl) & Borderlands (hell yeah!), I expected GREAT things! ...But then, yeah, that betrayal hit HARD. Luckily I hadn't bought it yet, by the time the news of its sorry state came out. But knowing me & my bro would never have what we'd so desperately looked forward to... That hurt. 😔 That was enough to make me swear off Gearbox already... But then I didn't even know about the rest of this ugly crap with their increasingly sleazy boss until this video. BIG ouch! All the more justifies my stance! 😨 (Except I got Risk of Rain 2 to play with my bro & friends back in early access, not realizing they have that now too... Noooo! I wonder if that's why controller support is so incomplete on menus... 😣)
This was so worth it! The Duke Nukem Forever problem turned out way bigger than I thought! Also the rise and downfall of Borderlands as a brand. Learned a ton, you guys. Great job!! Can't even begin to imagine how much research went into this. It really really shows
And later on the DLC/expansion fixed a lot of the issues. Really feels like Gearbox need to take things a bit slower and look at quality control for the stuff they put out.
they are pretty shady and peoples jobs have been lost through there shady practices, not to mention theft of art. if it wasn't for borderlands they would have gone under just after hells highway themselves. i for one will never fund this company again regardless of what game they release.
I hate to nitpick, but Battleborn didn’t lift designs from Furious 4 - the game was a direct recycling of ideas from Furious, in the vein of their approach to recycle Prax. Also, there were actually updates after the F2P switch, as well as content in the form of a surprisingly robust season pass. Support came to a close at the end of 2017, with major rebalances and quality of life improvements including additional modes and online bot support. Also, Iron Galaxy helped with The Handsome Collection because they helped also port Borderlands 2 to PS Vita. They were already familiar with porting games (like Gearbox, their main work of late is a support studio), and with the main game in particular. Don’t get me wrong - a solid video overall, and on point, but felt I should mention.
24:09 sad that Sacco was fired just for stating that some character writing made him uncomfortable. Thank you for including that info, though a little sad it seems to have been missed by the comments
Came here from that aussie foot guy's video. This was fantastic. Great research, depth, and detail. This is the kind of content that gets 6-7 digit views. I honestly have a soft spot for Gearbox and Randy Pitchford from getting Halo PC in 2004 when I was young, and playing the Borderlands games a few years ago. I just hope they finish 3 and that it's as good as the rest.
Did he finally do a Sims 2 DS review? I've also enjoyed a lot of Gearbox. I mentioned it in the video, but I was a straight up fanboi for OpFor. They had to make a lot of mistakes to end up where they are today.
Jesus Christ! Why does a Channel with such consistently high quality and well researched / pleasingly presented videos have so few Subs and Views? You should at least be getting in the hundreds of Thousands sub-wise.
I never realized Randy has been the head of Gearbox the whole time. Starting off with his past in card tricks and showmanship made everything I already knew about Gearbox make sense. I don't remember the timeline off the top of my head, but this video must have released before ol' Randy's flash drive did.
LETS GO MARINES Opposing Force was a reakly masterpiece It was too good The new weapons, monsters and characters Oh of course new protagonist Just perfect.
Borderlands 2 was my first and last Gearbox game. I have many fond memories playing with my friends on it. I had not idea that Gaige was a low skill character, maybe I'm the low skill character...
I switched my character halfway through, because Gaiges skills were literally promoting purposefully NOT hitting enemies. As a long time FPS player, I switched to Zer0. Way more fun for me. But I think it's cool, that they added a character, that doesn't require precise aiming. I don't understand how this is portrayed as a bad thing in this documentary. If anything, it is very inclusive.
Fantastic video! I don't usually bother to go outta my way to comment but, I'm amazed. You truly do deserve more viewers! Keep up the great work bud :)
If you happen to see this comment when checking your stuff, PLEASE do a follow up video to this one. It's honestly very well in-depth and given the recent stuff that happened, I think it would be a missed opportunity to not at least consider keeping an eye on Gearbox and Randy Pitchford for the next possible video. Despite how long the video is, it feels like it's missing a decent chunk of what has happened, though that isn't your fault. I look forward to whatever videos you decide to do regardless though!
Thanks for showing my dad in a good light :) Despite not being in the industry for 20 or so years now, I think Prax War and RBR is still the thing he's most proud of. We dislike Randy Pitchford in our family for other, undisclosed bad thing's he's done, so always nice to see videos on his downfall haha
I was VERY active in the alien community at the time A:CM was made and i spoke to severao timegate and demiurge devs before and after release. Their frustration with Gearbox was so so obvious. As they genuinely adored the franchise (and were very excited about some silly little easter eggs they had put in, usually in the dead time when gearbox was messing them around canceling things or generally missmanaging the project). And the lads from timegate clearly understood that the game was going to fail hard, and they would get a chunk of the blame unfairly. When you look at the dlc, which gearbox basically ignored and didnt mess with, theres a noticeable increase in quality. They're still harmed by the broken base elements, but it's actually got a cohesive (if bad) story, and lots of good features like ALL the playable characters that 99% of players never evensaw.
After all this controversies u mentioned, I felt a bit upset about one of my most favorite developers, but still Borderlands is my favorite shooter (6 full playthroughs of first game and 8 of Second And having almost every version of the game on all platforms, despite VR) 👐🏻
Although Ritual gave some assistance in the development of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, they weren't the main developers. That was Crystal Dynamics. I would've listed another game in its place, like Star Trek: Elite Force II or Heavy Metal F.A.K.K. 2. Still a fascinating and thorough documentary.
I tried to use a game the largest group of people would know, so I actually agree with you. Since it wasn't really about Ritual, just tying them back into the story, I was okay with using this shortcut. Thank for enjoying it!
they wont do it bud, they have left it too late, the game industry has moved on from WW2,and randy knows this. those games tied in with saving private ryan and band of brothers by HBO at the time and shared the success of those stories grabbing the lime light they had a window with this but missed it by years, the interest in this IP has shifted to other titles, borderlands being the money maker. sure we all would like to see another story with matt baker, but we wanted it within a couple of years of hells highway, allot of people don't really care for it now and its done with. they would have to back track from hells highway it wouldn't work now as newer gamers have either never heard of the other games or played them.so playing a newer part of the story wouldn't make sense to them, it would be like watching return of the jedi before strikes back and new hope.
This is one amazing video! I wish I had seen it years ago already. I definitely have to check more from you 😁. I loved Borderlands 1 and 2, but since then other games from them I haven't really enjoyed so much. I'm always ready to grab some popcorn for videos of Randy though.
I remember being flown from Sweden to LA to try Borderlands 3. Before the presentations and gameplay... they opend a bar with free bl3 themed drinks... at 10am. Gearbox gave every person there A LOT of stuff. Jackets, tshirts, bags and branden 3TB SSD harddrives 😅
My experience of Gearbox and their products are a bit hit and miss. I enjoyed playing Borderlands 1 and 2. Colonial Marines which I got rid of quickly and Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway which I personally though was a good game. After watching your video I just feel like the man behind the company was disillusioned and only really interested in himself and making a name for himself. Maybe even the money too.
I really enjoyed the Brothers in Arms games and the Borderlands series. Right now Gearbox has me pissed because of the long, long wait for Borderlands 3 or whatever it will be called.
Hot take: they were always fucking cringe and we all ought to have grown out of Borderlands by now. The only games of theirs I’ve found to be any good are the Brothers in Arms games.
I can find some enjoyment in original cringe, where it becomes unbearable is when they tried to copy that cringe for BL3. It's like trying to copy the "dark Peter Parker"-sequence from Spiderman 3, can't be done.
