Did you learn anything interesting? I love knowing that I taught someone! You can help promote this video by retweeting here twitter.com/MRIXRT/status/1520104022736314368 If I have any notes or clarifications, I'll add them here. Thank you to my patrons who allow me to produce this content!
Maybe 2 years too late, but I've learned that you have to make use of the bodyguards in Kingpin. This game is for people who love NPC fights in Gmod or infights in Doom.
It is still to this day so funny to me that when the whole "Think of them kids" was going on, no one bothered to check that average gamer was over 20 years old. And to this day it's something like 35.
It's even funnier (or perhaps sadder) that most of the politicians who were crying "think of the children" were probably thinking about children a little too much. Cough Cough Epstein Island Cough.
A game with an aesthetic like Kingpin's would look amazing with the kind of tech we have nowadays, just imagine something similar to Cyberpunk but with more art deco and gothic architecture with early 20th century-style signage everywhere
I remember when this game came out, and people in high school were ranting and raving about the game. Claiming it was literally the best game, better than Half-Life 1. I always wanted to play it, but it kind of just left my mind.
Haha I remember just 4 or 5 years after this game all the outrage was over the game Vice City. I cant tel you how many local and national news reports there were about the "dangers" of letting children play Vice City. Any and every crime was being blamed on the game. It might be a good video idea to chronicle the outrage for people who are too young to remember it.
3:51 that's actually pretty cool, and a game from a long time ago had that. some games annoy me that you always have a gun at the ready and you talk to npcs while pointing your gun straight at their body. no holster button or anything. it's a small immersion breaker but it's significant
I have never owned or played Kingpin. But the devs Wolfenstein game, Return to Castle Wolfenstein 2001, is still my favorite of the franchise. I'd definitely buy the remaster for Kingpin and Sin, but neither have been released, yet. Wish Nightdive Studios would remaster AVP2 2001 as well.
I'm considering looking into SiN actually, I think I've only played the first level. AvP 2001 would be a dream, I adore the alien movement, the storyline, the multiplayer, everything about that game was super solid.
Good stuff my dude. I hadn't ever looked into Kingpin much despite games like these being perfect subject matter for my own material and....well the game itself looked surprisingly undercooked which is also surprising given how much trouble it caused and what it led to. But you're definitely right in how it could have been any other violent game either same kind of marketing and it would have gotten the same reaction. Like I'd argue Soldier of Fortune is even more violent than this game was (thanks ghoul engine), so if it had been released around this time woooo boy.
Watching these news bits in retrospect, it seems like they were primarily concerned about the advertising methods of the games rather than the games themselves. I think this is a reason why we don't see edgy, shocking, or otherwise absurd video game print ads any more like the ones we'd see in Gamepro in the late 90s/early 00s
Clinton and Lieberman would later make their stances more clear when they would try to ban the sale of violent games in 2005, and also try to federalize the ratings board, in response to the leftover Hot Coffee code in GTA San Andreas, and then later in 2007 when Clinton and Spitzer tried to craft anti-video game laws for the state of New York thanks to the Mass Effect sex scenes and the sale of Manhunt 2 as an M title.
Hi! Thats game is legendary in Russian and have a nice translation from Fargus (Фаргус), so sad thats game is forgeted in whole world... its a postal 2 but older and more dark!
Great video, it deserves way more views as it has that million view + vibe. Duclid tones, good script, some memes, good editing combined with gameplay. It has it should take. I guess the algo never smiled upon thee. Well either way, thanks for the entertaining video after a 9 kitchen shift. It’s appreciated.
Well done and informative! I was particularly entertained by the comments from throughout the ages as that is something I have used in discussions before. Always throws people off to hear that there have been similar arguments against nearly every form of media since humanity started created them.
Thank you. I really like the Plato quote, because it solidifies how literally every single form of creative storytelling has been subject to the exact same thing
Always makes me sad thinking how these older games can still support servers and multiplayer, but companies worth billions pull the plug on multiplayer modes that slightly dip with no way for the consumer to keep playing.
Hey I just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos, you have a great radio voice that sounds like a deeper Wallace Shawn, and you have a keen perspective of the industry as a whole! Keep up the great work!
Kingpin is one of those games that's not quite perfect but is still a fun experience. Funny enough another Quake 2 Engine game "SiN" would also have the same "Leg/Chest/Head" armor system with each limb having different armor items. I do agree that the difficulty is wonky though, I think the Tommy Gun isn't quite useless but there is a notable issue where the early game weaponry is far more useful in enemy hands than yours.
1:52 I was also considering the same, the these games infamous to be part of the senate hearings back in the 90's are not that good, Night Trap is known as the face of the controversy, but it is as mediocre as any FMV of its era, Lethal Enforcer is more known for the peripheral it came with that the gameplay itself, and even Mortal Kombat since the version featured was the SNES port which is inferior, and they're knownore today for being always listed as part of the controversy than by their own merit.
24:24 Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is not a sequel to RTCW. It is an expansion that takes place during the events of the base game. Wolfenstein [2009] is the only true sequel to RTCW, however it merely could count as a requel, retconning the events of the Original Encounter for the Mac Family ports of Wolfenstein 3D (particularly it's antagonist Hans Grosse). Wolfenstein: The New Order is a full-fledged requel. It restarts the franchise while also serving as a sequel to the original universe, particularly continues where Wolfenstein [2009] left off.
Joe Liberman was supposedly hated by his own colleagues. The guy loves making very irrational arguments. You can see the people conversing with him with this expression: "Is he trying to tell a bad joke?"
You're not secretly lgr are you? You've even got a Duke Nukem video. Your voice is sound so similar it's kind of unreal I've been thinking it since I heard your first video and I've been wondering if it's a conspiracy.
For anyone who is wondering remaster turned out to be a piece of shit. Thankfully the original game is still available. They didn't do a Rockstar move.
Game was great, you are judging the past with the eyes of the present. Loading times weren't even bad. The reason enemies took so much ammo is cuz your aim sucks.
