Gearbox Takes Over | Half-Life: Opposing Force (Half-Life Series Retrospective)

when I was a kid I played Opposing Force and I always thought it was the original half-life

did anybody else find the black mesa trams kind of haunting and scary? I used to have nightmares about them as a kid

I always preferred Opposing Force over every other half-life game, even HL2. I just wish Race-X was used more in future games.

i think it takes place like the day after the resenance cascade after the rocket launch as once that happens the full scale alien invasion starts and the manta rays would be sent through as the things that teleport in after that point seem way more strategic implying it is the nylanth that is doing them.

The displacer can be used to pass through some areas by speed runners, whoever you really need to know when to enter and where it lead you to use it effectively.

I didn't realise this expansion pack had so much to talk about but damn, I really need to try this series sometime soon (I mean... I already own them all on steam I just haven't had the time) I've always loved when games let us play through what someone else was doing during an iconic event unfortunately off the top of my head the only other game I can remember doing this is... lego batman xD PS The rope swinging looks like you are being attacked by a wet noodle

Have to say this: I wholeheartedly agree with most of your evaluation. The part where I don't agree with it, is that OpForce manages to stand on it's own legs as a "complete package". Where the original HF arguably suffers most is of course it's entire Xen chapter and for some critics, also during the On a rail segment, OpForce's issues are even more glaring and numerous. While it succeeds with almost every introduction of a new enemy masterfully, in some cases even surpassing the original game with it's novelty, the pacing of the game feels very rushed, chaotic and far less integrated between chapters, when compared with HL. Rather than slowly connecting all the dots by following occasional breadcrumbs that Gordon collects during his adventure and slowly revealing the plot around him, Adrian is constantly isolated, too late to the party and acts as an "x-factor", or a force of nature that is being used to some ends, but not actually progressing any substantial narrative; there's a giant worm, now a biodome and hydrofauna studies; now there's some masked freaks with nija moves, but wait! they're fighting the aliens too, but wait! Now there's a nuke about to go off! All this leading to the most underwhelming boss fight ever....

So uh this is kinda embarrassing but I was actually playing through opposing force for the first time as I’m watching this and I was stuck not realizing rope climbing was a thing as I’m wildly running back and forth around an elevator shaft fuming as I had no idea what to do. So thanks for that

How could you forget Brothers in Arms? People give Gearbox so much shit, but to me, they made Brothers in Arms and Opposing force, so I still love them XD

Man, it has been a long time since I once liked let alone respected Gearbox. Don't buy their stuff now since Aliens Colonial Marines 2013. But, I did enjoy their older games. Sucks that every remaster of Halo Combat Evolved is based on the inferior pc port Gearbox did than Bungie's.

Well Quake 2 is better than Half-Life 1, and Opposing Force is better than Half-Life 1. You forgot to mention the new mode added to the multiplayer.
