The Barden allows much more dynamic range. Especially when using subtle finger picking or tapping. You can hear your fingerprints through the stings. But you have to know your tone knobs to appreciate.
You explain this really well, and demonstrate it expertly. Who knew that Maynard James Keenan was so knowledgeable with regard to pickup technology??!!!!
when describing the single coil sound from the coil-tap did I hear you say "more plong"?? haha, fantastic way to describe it, if I heard you correctly. Also, good job for covering a real range of styles and gain levels. Great review. The Bardens sounded a lot more focused to my ear. :)
Oh finally! I thought I'd never seen this with pickup testing. A special made double neck guitar. Which is the ONLY way to do a proper A/B test, since otherwise you have to pause, and swap out pickups. Thank you thank you thank you!! Any chance you're running for office this autumn...oh, sods, you're German...:-) ._)
Great video. The JBE's have two advantages to my ears. 1. When playing chords with some gain, you could hear each note with the JBE's, where the Duncan's sounded a little mushed up. 2. No single coil noise. Ahhh... But I agree that the high end can get a little sharp. Tone control perhaps?
On my Barden pickups they are very bright. I do really like them for recording. All my adjustments to tone down the brightness are done on the amp. My tone knobs have a great range and I can adjust pickups either single or hum as well as volume to get the right tone I'm looking for by blending. I have all possible combations on a 5-way super switch with stacked pots, which gives me two volumes and two tone knobs on a super strat. I made the stacked mini 500k pots into 250k pots as per specs. Did this 15 years ago.
have some original (wound by Joe) Joe Bardon pickups on my Master built Fender Jazz... along with the Sadowsky pre-amp and the ebony fretboard this is the crispest, cleanest sounding bass I've ever heard... Marcus Miller would be jealous of my tone! 😂
Just installed a set of JBE single coil sized humbuckers in a Strat for a friend. I used 500k pots instead of 250s they are amazing pups. Only criticism I was not impressed with the tone cap they sent so we're using a orange drop cap .
Awesome playing l have the JBE Gatton on my tele and l love them, was wondering about the humbuckers. Now my questions are answered. They are just as amazing as the Gattons. In Germany you have Ray Gerold making something like the JBE ,Greg Koch once revealed on his tele not being the JBE but the RG instead we don't know about the RG in the USA, Maybe a shoot out between them. Nothing on tube about them, l know you would make a awesome video. And being in Germany would give you easy access to Ray Gerold. (Anyway), just a thought great demo enjoyed it very much.
... excellent, excellent, man you actually make sense which is rarely seen on youtube. Could you please review JBE S-Deluxe as well and possibly compare them to TwoTone and to their 'Chunky' version as well ...
Did you manage to wire your guitar both for coil tap and coil split for Two/Tones at the same time? Also what about trying to run two coils of the same pickup in parallel? It can give you even more options.
Do you have 2 tone and 1 volume? What do you mean variable? BTW, its pity that you did not show how the tone works with SD and JBE. I am sure that when close 3/4 of tone pot SDs will lose all articulation and JBE still have enough midrange to keep articulation at acceptable level.
How do you wire the Bardens for split coil? I'm not sure what to do with the extra two "tap" wires. Do you have a wiring diagram? Great review by the way.
Yes, I too would like to know the not so recommended way to wire these pickups. The diagram I received with my pickups today only shows the two standard modes that you demo'd. Nice job btw on the review, thanks!
+Andjelko Jakovljevic Yes, Joe only uses ceramic magnets, but don't be confused. His pickups are not harsh, because he know how to work with the ceramic magnets.
